American College Football is a rite of passage for many young people, especially young men hoping to break into the National Football League (NFL). It is an American love affair, one that captures the hearts and souls of millions of Americans across the world, and leaves outsiders a little confused and bewildered.

What exactly is significant college football?

American College Football, better known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), contains four distinct levels of college football. However, the most essential division you need to be aware of is the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) – which is the top division. The second division is called the Football Championship Subdivision, abbreviated as the FCS, followed by Division II and Division III (naturally, the numbering makes it a little confusing).

The FBS

So, the top division, the FBS, is made up of 124 teams (you read that correctly), which are spread across 11 different conferences. Of these 11 conferences, six of them are characterised as major – the Big East, the Pac-12, the Big 10, the Big XII, the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference. It’s a little less complicated than the National Basketball Association (NBA), which is comprised of 30 teams, split across two different conferences.

The reason these conferences are considered the “true” majors is that no school from outside of these six conferences has ever won the national championship, or even played in the final since the Bowl Championship Series era was implemented in 1998.

How is a champion determined?

Once the regular season has finished, a BCS National Championship Game is played. The teams that finished first and second in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings automatically qualify this match. But how are the BCS rankings determined? You have six conference champions and four additional teams that play across five BCS bowl games, on a rotational basis. Basically, the two top teams from that mini-competition are selected to play the in the final match.

Why is the atmosphere so intense at college games?

Before the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing requirements were implemented, college football games would experience huge crowds. For example, in 2019, the average attendance for college fixtures was close to 42 000 people, which was ironically the lowest average turnout since 1996.

So, why do Americans care so much? Well, their culture is very sport-centred and is highly localised. Small communities, towns and regions are often more invested in their local college team than the professional side that might represent them in the NFL. Indeed, this is largely because college football predates the professional game – so the college teams and codes have a richer history than the professional teams. As a result, the love for local college sides is generational, passed down from families to families.

It also helps that the stadiums are decked out with the latest innovations and technology, ensuring the experience for crowd gatherers is surreal and seamless. This is entirely different from other national competitions, like Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) or the Australian Football League (AFL), where teams are evaluated purely based on performance. Expert polls or opinion ratings do not influence where teams finish on the ladder. While there is always speculation in other codes, these opinions remain speculation only!

What are the essential rules to understand and remember?

For non-Americans, college football can be somewhat boring, especially if you don’t give it a chance. There are a lot of timeouts and breaks in play. It is by no means a fluid sport. The field is 100 yards in length (which equates to approximately 91 metres) and 160 feet wide. The main goal is to score “touchdowns”, in which a player must take the ball across the “goal line” into the end zone. The other way to score points is through “field goals”, which is where the ball must be kicked and go between the vertical posts and over the crossbar. A touch down is worth 6 points (and an additional point if the conversion is successful), while a field goal is worth 3 points. A “safety” is worth 2 points, which refers to when an offensive player is stopped in his/her own end zone. This very rarely happens.

Kick-offs take place at the beginning of the game, which is determined via a coin toss. The team that receives the ball is “offence”, and the other team is “defence”. The entire game is meant to be an hour, consisting of four 15-minute quarters; however, with timeouts and breaks, the entire game is more like three hours in duration. After a touchdown, a score or when the second half begins, the ball is kicked-off again by the defending team (similar to rugby union or rugby league).

For many this is new, and the demands of working from home are hampering productivity. Even parent freelancers who are used to working from home, are breaking under the pressure of work and constant interference, with kids out of school. This article will identify nine things that can affect your productivity and offer suggestions to combat them.

  1. You are not working on a schedule.

It’s easy to wake up and simply work according to the demands of the day, but this is not helpful. Remote work is best done on a schedule. Here’s what happens when you don’t work on a schedule: you get frazzled by overwhelming demands, you multitask (in vain), you don’t get a break, and you’re ultimately unproductive.

Suggestion: Manage your time effectively by ordering your day and workload. Now is the time to use a work planner and schedule your activities to the extent that you can. Use reminders on Microsoft Office or on your devices for meetings and project timelines.

Take scheduled breaks. When you feel overwhelmed, that’s when you should get up and take a refreshing walk, have a cold drink, or eat a snack.

  1. You are not keeping in touch with friends

From time to time, you should keep in touch with your support system and team members. Sharing your struggles is more therapeutic than you can imagine. You may find the help you need from a conversation with a colleague, or discover new information to simplify your work process.

A good chair ensures that your back is properly supported to aid good posture.  Experts have revealed that sitting in a bad chair can affect your posture, cause weight gain, fatigue, and a host of cardiovascular diseases. 

Suggestion: As more organizations adopt remote work, you are likely to be working from home for a long time. So it’s important for you to take care of your health, just as you would expect a company to. If you’re in paid employment, your company should provide this on your behalf. If they won’t, request for it. If you’re working as a freelancer, you should invest in a good chair just as you invest in software tools.

  1. You’re not getting enough sleep.

We’ve all been there. You have nightmare-inducing deadlines that keeps you awake at odd hours and constantly working. There are several reasons why you should get enough sleep, but chief of them is the fact that it helps you to maintain clarity of thought and energizes you to deliver your targets. 

This is why time scheduling is so important. When your time is properly apportioned, you can dedicate time to rest and reenergize yourself for future tasks. To be fair, sometimes, you are just overcome by the demands of work, but even in those times, it’s imperative that you take short breaks (when long ones are impossible) as often as you can.

Suggestion: Turn off your devices and get some good sleep. Schedule your day to incorporate rest.

  1. You’re on social media while you’re at work.

In most cases, no one is monitoring your internet activity when you work from home. There’s definitely no colleague snooping over your shoulder, and your boss cannot knock on your stall to catch you in the act. You are only accountable to yourself. But this freedom is a distraction that can prevent you from being productive. 

I get it, sometimes you really need that distraction from the drudgery of work, and maybe you actually need to be on social media. But you’re still expected to deliver results and be productive. So what can you do?

Suggestion: Schedule your social media time, and activate apps and software that prevent your phone or computer from using social media. These software are also great for team leads who need to monitor employees in remote locations.

  1. You are not prepared for the kids!

Working from home (in a pandemic or otherwise) as a parent is like working four jobs. You’re doing your job, working as a homeschooler, cook and babysitter. It is utterly exhausting, and for most employees, this is the chief hindrance to productivity.

Anticipating your kids’ needs before the day begins, is a good way to ensure that your productivity does not tank. But much more than doing this, you need to also put them on a schedule, especially if they are of school age. It’s also important to set boundaries and delegate age-appropriate tasks to them. For example, you can teach them how to make simple snacks on their own. Let your schedule also include time-outs with them. You can let them know for instance, when your break is going to be, and encourage them to look forward to that time and let you work.

Suggestion: Get them snacks. Get them crafting materials. Keep them entertained with a book or games.

Migrating from one platform to another is mostly a complex task. Especially if it involves two of the most popular email applications – Gmail and Outlook 365 (Outlook app connected with Office 365). Fortunately, there are three methods to migrate Gmail to Outlook 365:

  1. Importing a copy of all Gmail data into Outlook 365 account

We will perform this operation in this article. There are no prerequisites other than the obvious ones – the presence of Gmail and Outlook.

  1. Connecting Gmail email account in Outlook on the web (Microsoft 365)

With this method, you can connect the Gmail account with Outlook on the web account in Microsoft 365. This method is feasible for users who want to keep using Gmail and have the need of accessing the files in Outlook 365.

  1. Migrate Gmail consumer data into Office 365

  2. Copy all the emails from Gmail folder to the Office 365 folder.

  1. Configure Gmail account with Outlook.
  2. Export Gmail data in PST from Outlook.
  3. Import PST file directly into Outlook 365 profile.

Configure Gmail account in Outlook

  1. Run Outlook and click File menu to select the Add Account button in the Info tab.
  2. Choose Manual Setup option and then click Next.
  3. Now, select POP or IMAP option and click Next.
  4. Enter the details of your Gmail account:
    • Your name
    • Your email address
    • Account type – IMAP
    • Incoming mail server – imap.gmail.com
    • Outgoing mail server – pop.gmail.com
    • Gmail id and password
  5. After entering these details, click More settings and go to the Outgoing server tab. Here, checkmark My outgoing server requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
  6. Now, go to the Advanced tab and enter the following details:
    • Incoming server(IMAP) – 993 or 143
    • Incoming server encryption – SSL/TLS
    • Outgoing server(SMTP) – 465 or 587
    • Outgoing server encryption – SSL/TLS
  7. Click Ok to save the settings, click Next on the previous window.
  8. Finally, test your account settings and click Close once the test completes successfully.

Congratulations, your account is configured and we can move onto the next step to migrate Gmail to Outlook 365 account.

Copy Emails or Export/Import data in PST format

Once the account is configured, all the Gmail emails will appear on the left panel. Now, you have two options:

Either Copy all emails to Office 365 account

Here, what you can do is to copy all the emails from the Gmail account and paste it in the Office 365 configured account within Outlook. This way, you can migrate Gmail to Outlook 365. This is a basic technique where you will have to recreate folder structure in Outlook 365 account yourself.

OR First Export then Import Gmail data back in Outlook 365

With this, the structure is automatically maintained, and it takes less time than the previous method.

  • Open Outlook, go to File menu and click Open & Export option.
  • Choose the Import/Export option.
  • Select the Export to a file and click Next.
  • Select Outlook data file(.pst) and click Next.
  • Choose the Gmail account and click Next.
  • Browse the location to save the PST file and click Finish.

Once the file is saved, import it again in Outlook, but this time directly in the Office 365 configured account.

Note: You can also skip all the above steps by using Gmail email backup (for personal Gmail) and G Suite backup guide (for business Gmail) to generate PST file and then import it in Outlook with the following steps. But it will cost you a little. After all, good things don’t come for free.

  • Click File menu and again select Open & Export, then Import/Export.
  • This time, choose Import from another program or file and click Next.
  • Select Outlook data file and click Next.
  • Browse the previously export PST file and click Next.
  • Now, select Import items into the same folder in: and choose the Office 365 account, then click Finish.
  • MS Outlook will copy all Gmail data to Outlook 365 account.
  • Once the Gmail to Outlook 365 migration process completes, you will see all your Gmail emails in Outlook 365 mailbox.

Now you can remove the Gmail account from Outlook. This is by far the easiest method to migrate Gmail to Outlook 365 for personal Gmail users.
