Marry a Filipina is a blog dedicated to providing information and advice to Western men seeking to love and marry a Filipina woman. We chatted to founder Joe Smith to learn more about his mission.

When did you start your website and what motivated you?

My interest in the Philippines began back in the mid-90’s. Pen pal services for meeting Filipinas went digital, and I was intrigued by the idea of meeting someone from that country.

I started writing about Filipina dating after spending significant time in the Philippines. I saw the good, the bad, and the ugly regarding relationships between Western men and Filipinas. It seemed there were a lot of men who were extremely happy with their choice to marry someone from another country. But scamming was pretty common as well. I wanted to create a website that would help me find a genuine, sincere partner. I also wanted to provide information regarding culture, immigration, etc.

What are the reasons for the growing interest in having a Filipina wife?

Western culture has been increasingly influenced by a radical strain of feminism. I think a large number of Western men have been turned off by this and want to find someone with more traditional values. Some people believe that Western men who date Filipinas are just looking for a glorified maid. This is not true in my observation—most simply want to find someone who is completely different than the kinds of women they were meeting in the Western dating scene.

Filipinas also tend to be open to dating older men. A bachelor in his 40s may still want to start a family. The likelihood of that happening with a woman his age is low. Filipinas in their 20s have no problem dating a man this age, so you see how the two may get together.

Is Filipino culture very different from Western culture?

Yes and no. Filipinos are heavily influenced by Western media: movies, sports, etc. They are also good at speaking English (especially when compared to other Asian countries). However, Filipinos tend to be much more group/family oriented. There’s a lot more I could say about culture, but I’ve written several articles about it on the website.

How is your website different from other Filipina dating sites?

Most Filipina dating websites are services for Westerners and Filipinas to meet (I actually recommend one of these particular websites for meeting women from the Philippines). But my website is geared more towards providing information and advice. I have a few articles, for example, about our experiences with the immigration/visa process.

What are some of the common online dating scams to look out for?

As you can imagine, scams always revolve around money. Scammers will ask an unwitting victim to send them money for medical bills, emergencies, airfare, etc. I always advise men to avoid sending money to someone they haven’t met in person.

Do you have any tips for finding lasting love?

First and foremost, I recommend finding a reputable website (there is one I endorse on my site). Second, move slowly and use caution—you don’t have to immediately commit to the first woman you “meet” online. Take some time to talk with her and make sure you have some real chemistry. Third, plan to meet her in person if you really think there is potential for a lifelong relationship. Those are just a few things that come to mind.

Trump claims credit for renewed talks between North and South Korea

United States President Donald Trump has recently taken the credit for the re-opening of talks between North and South Korea. Trump said that the United States threats for nuclear war had persuaded North Korea to re-establish diplomacy with South Korea.

This Wednesday North Korea reopened a hotline on the border that had been silent for the last two years. For many this suggested that tensions between North and South Korea were beginning to cool down after recent months of military posturing.

2017 had seen a back and forth between Donald Trump and his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong-un with both leaders boasting their ability to wage nuclear war. North Korea tested its highest performing ballistic missile and the US state of Hawaii re-introduced nuclear attack sirens as a preparation for potential North Korean attack.

The move to re-open the hotline followed soon after Donald Trump tweeted a taunt aimed at Kim Jong-un talking about the size of his own “nuclear button”. This timing prompted Trump to conclude that his posturing had scared North Korea into wanting to improve relations with South Korea for fear of US nuclear attack.

Trump stated that he re-opening of talks between North and South Korea was due to his “firm” and “strong” stance against Kim Jong-un. He went on to say that his willingness to “commit our total ‘might’ against the North” had put North Korea in its place and called those who doubted him “fools”.

Trump concluded by saying that he though the new talks between the two mortal enemies was a “good thing”. North and South Korea have still technically been at war since the truce in 1953 which is different from a formal peace treaty.

The remarks by Trump were in contrast to those by the US United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley who tried to remove herself from the new contact between North and South Korea. She said that the situation did not need a “Band-Aid” and that the end goal was for North Korea to dismantle its nuclear arsenal.

The United States State Department gave a warning that this new contact could be a North Korean attempt to separate the United States from South Korea.

The hotline call lasted only 20 minutes but the details of the discussion were not made public. The hotline was originally shut down by North Korea in a backlash against the closing of a border town operated by both North and South Korea.

A North Korean news broadcast agency said that the talks were regarding the prospect of a North Korean delegation visiting South Korea’s Winter Olympic Games this year.

Serena Williams announces she won’t be competing in the Australian Open

Defending champion, Serena Williams, reluctantly withdraws from this years’ Australian Open set to begin in just over a week. This comes just a few days after 3-time grand slam winner, Andy Murray, pulled the pin on his Australian Open hopes due to injury.

Williams explains that she doesn’t feel as though she is ready to perform at her high levels at the major grand slam. After giving birth to her just daughter just 4 months ago, fans will have to wait a bit longer for her comeback.

The Williams team made their decision to pull out after her loss to Jelena Ostapenko in Abu Dhabi during an exhibition match. Williams says that she is close to her best but not exactly where she wants to be. She wants to be bigger and better than before, and that will take a bit more time.

She is disappointed that she will not compete in the Australian Open, and she is thankful of the understanding and support given by her fans, other players and the organisers of the Australian Open.

Craig Tiley, the Australian Open director, voiced his respect for Williams and her hard work and determination to attempt to make the grand slam after having a child only 4 months ago. Tiley looks forward to having Williams back at her best for the 2019 Australian Open.

Last year Serena Williams was at the top of her game, winning the 2017 Australian Open against her sister, Venus Williams. It was later revealing that she was playing in the tournament while more than 2 months pregnant.

Another major withdrawal from the Australian Open includes that of Japanese star Kei Nishikori, who has been ruled out due to injury. Nishikori’s recent wrist injury has meant that he is not 100% and couldn’t last the wear and tear of a 5-set match.

There are also injury clouds surrounding other major names in the men’s draw including Stan Wawrinka, Rafael Nadel and Novak Djokovic. With so many big players out and potentially out of the Australian Open it will be interesting to see if a new player can rise and emerge as a force to be reckoned with in the world of tennis.

Despite a major shake up to the men’s draw, Roger Federer is still looking in fine form. Any potential young gun looking to take out the men’s championship will certainly need to be playing at their best to stand a chance against the Fed Express! Maybe it will be time for young Aussie Nick Kyrgios to make a major mark in the Australian Open?

Hollywood district attorney reviews evidence against Harvey Weinstein

Los Angeles prosecutors have revealed that they are currently reviewing two cases concerning the now disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

The police department in Beverly Hills has passed on the final results of its investigations to the district attorney of the Los Angeles County. The district attorney will have the final say on whether this is enough evidence to justify criminal charges against Weinstein.

In October last year the Beverly Hills detectives confirmed that they had begun investigation on multiple complaints made against Harvey Weinstein and Hollywood director James Toback.

Police departments in New York, Los Angeles and London had already been carrying out investigations on the allegations against Weinstein.

A task force established by Jackie Lacey, the district attorney, is reviewing the cases in order to resolve the Hollywood scandal that has dominated entertainment media for the last few months. Some of the allegations against Weinstein are said to have taken place at hotels across Beverly Hills.

The district attorney failed to confirm the exact investigations that were being reviewed and what cases they related to. He also did not mention when any kind of decision is expected to be made.

Weinstein has categorically denied all allegations against him regarding sexual misconduct. These include claims that he has raped several women during his career and that the Hollywood industry protected him.

Weinstein is reported to have been attending therapy since the controversy began last year.

Multiple women have come out against Weinstein with claims of incidents dating back several decades. An investigative piece by the New York Times started the saga by featuring numerous allegations of sexual misconduct perpetrated by Weinstein.

These initial allegations sparked the #MeToo movement which has begun to change the landscape of the entertainment industry. Many women have come forward with similar allegations against other Hollywood personalities such as Kevin Spacey.

Senator Al Franken also resigned his position after pressure following allegations of sexual misconduct by him at a party.

Hollywood star Matt Damon weighed in on the issue and attempted to explain that there was a spectrum of severity regarding different cases of sexual misconduct. He received backlash for his comments by ex-partner Minnie Driver.

Since the scandal began, Weinstein has become an infamous figure in the entertainment industry, serving as an example of Hollywood’s secret culture of manipulating female talent with promises of fame.

Weinstein was sacked by the company he himself founded and was expelled by the Oscar’s Academy. The district attorney’s decision will determine if Weinstein’s downfall finally results in criminal charges.
