2019 federal election results: Labor claims victory in Lilley

First-time federal candidate, Anika Wells, secured the seat of Lilley for Labor with a 901 vote lead against Brad Carswell.

Prior to this win, the odds have not been on Labor’s side as they were only able to retain five seats in Queensland.

Retaining the seat of Lilley was their best chance at putting a halt to their dwindling number of Queensland seats. Failure to retain the seat would mean they don’t retain any seats north of the Brisbane River.

With Wells’ narrow victory, the party was able to win six out of the 30 Queensland seats.

The seat of Lilley was held by the former prime minister and treasurer, Wayne Swan since 1988. Prior to that, Swan has also had a term from 1993-1996

Lilley’s 142-square-kilometer electorate spans from the north’s bayside Brighton up to the east’s Brisbane Airport. This follows the south’s Brisbane river.

Anika Wells thanked voters for the support as she waved at drivers during rush hour on Sandgate Road this morning.

The former lawyer’s campaign focused on securing funds for local medical facilities and educational institutions. Aside from that, Wells is also an advocate for taking action against the threats of climate change. Something the locals found

As someone who was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease while she was pregnant, Wells experienced the shortcomings of public healthcare first-hand. The experience prompted her to advocate for a proper healthcare system.

Locals are now waiting for the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) to officiate the declaration of Labor’s victory.

Despite Brad Carswell’s loss in Lilley, LNP has managed to retain the marginal seats of Petrie and Dickson.

“While my youngest daughter started reading at age three, she never really enjoyed it. She preferred audio books and buddy reading. While she excelled at superficial reading age tests and eye examines, we never really understood why she was a reluctant reader. Her teacher at Moerlina encouraged us to keep looking for a solution but we were hesitant to spend more money on optometrists who insisted that there was no problem with her vision.

That was until we met JP Guillon at Eye 5 Optometrists…After a detailed eye examination, JP recommended glasses to realign her eyes and reduce eye strain. JP predicted that with her new glasses, Inde would be reading spontaneously and joyously by the end of summer (a period of less than three months). While we were optimistic, we were genuinely surprised by her progress. Previously she would read 2-3 pages a night before fatiguing. Reading every night was a chore, certainly not a pleasure. By the end of summer, she had devoured the Carol Wilkinson Dragon Keeper trilogy! This term, she has enthusiastically looked forward to a weekly visit to the library to stock up on books. Her confidence at school has improved significantly. She no longer judges a book by its size and word length. Her favourite author is Michael Morporgo and her favourite genre is historical fiction. Reading is now one of her favourite leisure activities! We have been delighted with JP’s expertise and advice.” – Josephine Muir

Explosions in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu kills 4 and injures 7

Three separate explosions disrupted the peace in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, killing at least four and leaving 7 others injured according to police sources.

The deadly blasts went off last Sunday as panic ensued. According to authorities, two explosions took place in the capital’s center while the other two on the outskirts.

Police claim that crude or improvised explosives triggered the blasts.

An official suspects that a Maoist splinter group was responsible for the explosions after their flyers were found near the area. The group held a nationwide strike in protest of their cadre’s death after a police encounter that happened over a week before. The incidents came on the eve of the protest.

Police implicated the same group in another Kathmandu explosion that killed one civilian last February.

According to police officer Shyam Lal Gyawali, three of the victims died “on the spot” while the fourth died at the hospital while undergoing medical treatment.

The initial explosion killed one person in the Ghattekulo residential area. Three other people were killed in the second blast that happened in the Sukedhara area. The third blast injured two more people in the Thankot area of the capital. All of the seven injured were hospitalized.

17-year-old student Govinda Bhandari told Reuters news agency in an interview: “I heard a big noise and rushed to the spot to find the walls of a house had developed cracks due to the impact of the blast.”

Security forces have restricted the blast locations while investigations are currently ongoing. The government banned activities of the suspected Maoist splinter group as they were outlawed following the deadly incident.

Iraqi court sentences French ISIL members to death

Three of the twelve French citizens captured by US-backed fighters in Syria are the first ISIL members to receive a death sentence. The Iraqi court ruling was made last Sunday in Baghdad.

An Iraqi court sentenced Kevin Gonot, Leonard Lopez and Salim Machou to death and have 30 days to appeal. According to a court official, the three were found guilty of joining the Islamic State militant group.

Kevin Gonot, 32, was arrested in Syria with his family back in 2017.

Leonard Lopez, 32, entered Syria with his wife and 2 kids after traveling to IS-held Mosul according to French investigators.

Salim Machou, 41, is a member of an IS cell that committed attacks in Syria and Iraq according to France’s Centre d’Analyse du Terrorisme (CAT).

Nabil Boudi, the lawyer of Lopez, heavily condemned the trial calling it a “summary justice.” In an interview with AFP News Agency, the lawyer said that the court ruling was “based solely on a series of interrogations in Baghdad jails”.

Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, declined to comment on the court ruling, saying it is Iraq’s sovereign matter.

US-backed Syrian Democratic forces caught thousands of ISIL members who are now under the custody of Iraq after being repatriated from Syria.

According to the BBC, approximately 6,000 ISIL members originate from Europe.

Iraqi courts have been putting hundreds of foreigners on trial. many of whom were sentenced to life in prison or given the death penalty. As of yet, none of these foreign ISIL members have been executed.

Human rights activists claim that Iraq’s trials rely heavily on circumstantial evidence or and using torture to extract confessions from alleged ISIL members.

Amnesty International reports last April that Iraq is one of the top five nations in the world that use capital punishment.

Fans Walked Out of Spice Girls Reunion Concert

Banking on nostalgia seems to be a pretty good fallback for stars of the 1990s and the Spice Girls are no stranger to this idea. When the Spice Girls announced their reunion back in 2018, fans were ecstatic. It seemed too good to be true. In fact, it apparently is.

First, there was the disappointing news that Victoria Beckham a.k.a Posh Spice won’t be joining the reunion. (Way to leave a gaping void in our tween hearts!) And now, it seems that the world tour is on a rocky start.

When the Spice Girls reunion concert kicked off in Dublin, Ireland they left many disappointed as the show was plagued with audio issues. Fans took to social media to address the issue and many complained about the sound delays, feedback, and even not being able to hear our favorite 90’s pop icons at all. What a bust.

Certain fans couldn’t help but just walk out right then and there, clearly frustrated about not getting what they paid for.

In Instagram story later that night, Mel B was the only member of the famous girl group to address what happened. Scary Spice thanked the fans who attended their show and went on to say “We will see you in Cardiff and hopefully the vocals and the sound will be much, much better.

The four women continued to with the set list of their greatest hits despite the audio problems.

Their reunion show in Dublin was first Spice Girls performance since they appeared in the Olympics closing ceremony back in 2012. The girl group will continue on to perform 12 more concerts in the United Kingdom. Hopefully, without any technical difficulties.

Ariana Grande’s wax figure is making rounds for all the wrong reasons

Madame Tussauds just dropped their wax figure of Ariana Grande in London and her legion of fans are just not having it. While the pop music icon looks incredibly beautiful in real life, fans can’t say the same for her wax sculpture version.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxd9e8IlAHi/

The less than impressive wax figure was unveiled last week and will continue to be on display in London for five more weeks. If you haven’t seen it, we suggest not to bother going to see the actual thing. The wax statue wouldn’t even pass for a Grande impersonator without her signature high ponytail, knee-high boots, and an oversized sweater.

Since the unveiling, the people of Twitter have been sharing their two cents about how the figure looks nothing like Ari. One Twitter user claims the figure looks like the pop star if she were on crack. Another has gone as far as saying Ariana should take offense rather than be flattered by Madame Tussauds gesture.

This isn’t the first time Madame Tussauds came under fire for their botched waxwork of famous personalities. Remember Meghan Markle’s? If you don’t, let’s leave it that way.

Another major celebrity that Madame Tussauds have failed to give justice to is the Queen B herself, Beyonce. The New York Times reported that the famed wax museum had to make chances to Bey’s wax figure due to heavy criticism for the lack of likeness.

So should we expect Ari’s wax figure to undergo major changes as well? Amidst the backlash, we can only hope so. As of yet, Ariana Grande is too busy being her fabulous self to react to the issue.
