Malaysia to return waste from Australia, US and more

Malaysian minister says 450 metric tonnes of contaminated plastic waste will be shipped back from the countries of origin. This is in an act of refusal to become a garbage dump for developing countries.

According to minister Yeo Bee Yin, the nine shipping containers carrying the 950 tons of trash came from Australia, US, UK, Bangladesh, China, Japan, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. Five containers of garbage have been returned to Spain back in April.

Minister Yeo Bee Yin is in charge of energy, science, technology and climate change in Malaysia. In a press conference, Yeo urged the developed countries like US and UK to “review their management of plastic waste and stop shipping garbage to developing countries”.

In an effort to halt the issue of illegal plastic waste imports in Malaysia, the country has launched joint task force operations since April 24.

Another Southeast Asian country that has been on the receiving end of these illegally exported plastic waste is the Philippines. Philippine president Rodrigo Roa Duterte said he was prepared to “declare war” on Canada after the country failed to take back tons of waste back on May 15. The Canadian government has since responded to the issue taking full responsibility by covering the full expenses of the return operation before June ends.

Malaysia, along with 187 other countries has come to an agreement with adding plastic to the Basel Convention. It is a treaty regulating the shipping of hazardous materials from country to country. The treaty was issued to address the world’s growing problem of plastic pollution.

Katy Perry is set to release her new single “Never Really Over”

Katy Perry is returning to music once again with a new single entitled “Never Really Over”

The 34-year-old pop star announced the release of the song on Instagram last Friday. Along with the song’s promo photo, the singer wrote “5.31.19 Pre-save in bio. #NeverReallyOver” in the caption. The photo featured Perry with strawberry blonde hair while rocking a what seems to be a bright orange dress.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByArO74Hjji/

British actor Orlando Bloom, Perry’s boyfriend, didn’t hold back his excitement for his girlfriend’s new song. In the comment section, the 42-year-old actor wrote “My mag G,” along with three fire emojis.

Perry’s latest release was the summer hit “Con Calma” remix by Daddy Yankee that featured her vocals. It was released last month, constantly charting on music streaming apps like Spotify. Her last album entitled “Witness” debuted in June last year.

The singer is certainly busy while she juggles her time between recording singers and being a judge on the show American Idol. Last week, Perry completed her second season as a judge on the hit talent search that’s aired on TV. Along with her are fellow judges, singers Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. The trio has suggested the possibility of an 18th season with the media as the current season is coming to an end.

We’ll see if her experiences as an American Idol judge will influence her new music. Katy Perry’s fans are ecstatic for the news of the singer’s new single. Let’s hope it will be a hit and Perry might even rise back to her status of peak stardom.

Kim Kardashian’s new summer ‘do is to die for

Summer is the season of reinvention as notable celebs are trading their signature looks for dramatic changes. The internet was here for Sophie Turner when she wore bangs in an interview on The Graham Norton Show. Andrew Garfield’s blonde hair made headlines and now Kim Kardashian is hopping on board the transformation train.

The reality star and mom of four flaunted her brand new look on her Instagram Story that she also reposted on Twitter. In the post, she wears a sleek bob with her hair the shortest it’s been in 2019.

Kim was also seen sporting the new bob while she was getting out of a car in Calabasas last Tuesday. The off brand hairstyle came as a surprise to fans who greeted her as she made her way to visit “Kimmel”.

It might be a weave or it might really be Kim’s freshly cut hair but either way, there’s no denying that she looks absolutely bomb. The refreshing look followed her fifth wedding anniversary with husband Kanye West.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxVdknbnqPS/

It was only recently when the Hollywood couple welcomed their fourth child, Psalm West. Kim announced the birth of her baby boy through no less than a now-viral Instagram post. She wrote “We celebrated our baby boy about a week ago and now he’s here! He’s so perfect! Here are some pics of my CBD baby shower. I was freaking out for nothing because he is the most calm and chill of all of my babies so far and everyone loves him so much”.

USA loses top NBA prospect to Australia as NBL rises

The National Basketball League (NBL) of Australia and New Zealand is emerging as a global superpower in basketball. This brings troublesome news to America’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

American high school player RJ Hampton has signed on to the NBL. This is good news for the New Zealand Breakers as the team welcomes Hampton, widely considered as a top prospect for next year’s NBA draft.

Credible basketball recruiting sites in America have rated the 18-year-old point guard with five stars. A ranking considered as one of the most sought after amongst high schooler aspiring to play professionally.

The teenage basketball star received a 96 out of 100 ratings from ESPN, declaring him the top 5 overall prospect for 2020’s NBA draft.

News of Hampton’s decision to play in Auckland came as a shock not just to basketball colleges in the United States. American sports media have also expressed doubts against New Zealand Breakers’ ability to develop future NBA talent.

The news has also been unfortunate for the NCAA as rising stars are becoming more and more aware of the option to be paid while playing overseas. It is forbidden in the NCAA to pay amateur athletes, a rule being criticized for possible exploitation.

According to Hampton in an interview with ESPN, his decision rooted from his dream to “live like a pro and to play with grown men every day and to not have to juggle books and basketball”.

This is NBL’s advantage over the NCAA. The professional basketball league offers reasonable pay and experience playing against professional athletes.

Tech giant Apple responds to privacy jab from Sundar Pichai

Apple’s Craig Federighi has responded to Google’s Sundar Pichai. The latter indirectly and without dropping names, dragged Apple an editorial he wrote for The New York Times. The piece was published earlier this month.

While Pichai was defending Google’s approach to data and privacy, the CEO took an ambiguous jab at Apple. He wrote, “privacy cannot be a luxury good offered only to people who can afford to buy premium products and services”. Although he didn’t mention the tech brand or any names at all, he didn’t have to. The public already knew he was pertaining to Apple following the concerns that have been raised regarding data privacy and security.

Apple’s chief of software Craig Federighi has dismissed the criticism in an interview with The Independent. Federighi doesn’t buy into the jab that the company was turning privacy into a luxury. He was quoted saying,

“And of course, we love, ultimately, to sell Apple products to everyone we possibly could certainly not just a luxury, we think a great product experience is something everyone should have.”

In the same interview, the software chief took a few ambiguous jabs back at Google without directly calling them out. According to him, privacy was a “deeper issue” that will require “more than a couple of months and a couple of press releases would make”.

Apple has been strongly vocal in addressing users’ data privacy and security. Apple CEO, Tim Cook, claims that privacy is a “fundamental human right”. Facebook and Google have come under fire over the process of collecting data from their users. Google has since been making an effort to address user concerns.
