Black Adam is the anti-hero, the less nicer version of Shazam. Both having similar costumes with the lightning crest in their chests but instead of the red overalls, Black Adam’s is well, black.
A scene in the Shazam movie starring Zachary Levi showed that there were seven chairs but only had six ‘champions’, the seventh of which didn’t work out the way they wanted to. That champion was Black Adam. While Black Adam was kind of the standard superhero villain in the beginning, he was given a well-thought-out, well-written back story that is tragic, being a slave that was imbued by the power of Shazam.
Black Adam used his newfound abilities coupled with his rage to eliminate all the people who were responsible for enslaving his people. As much as he has anger issues that can rival the worst of celebrities’ meltdowns, but the finality is he is still fighting for what’s right even with the brutality he possesses and goes about his ways in a very brutal and violent fashion.
He has also been a part of the Justice Society of America, a superhero team that while they do help save humanity, he consistently butts heads with his teammates with how he does things.
Johnson emphasized on his post that as a ten-year-old boy, he always wanted to be Superman. But as he grew older, he realized that while his heart was in the right place, he was too counter-culture and developed more of an anti-authority outlook in life to ever become the Man of Steel, thus identifying more with Black Adam.
This has made fans excited online with the casting of Johnson as the DC anti-hero. Some people online even question casting decisions made by the likes of Marvel and DC when it comes to their superheroes but there is probably no argument that with Johnson, there is no doubt that he has that classic superhero look that he has mastered and worked hard forever since he was in the WWE as The Rock, a superhero in his own right.
