The Aeronuts is an adventure-thriller birthed from the research and life of English meteorologist and aeronaut James Glaisher which stars Felicity Jones (Rogue One, Inferno) and Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts, Les Misérables) with Tom Harper directing and Jack Thorne writing the screenplay.

The film recounts the work of Glaisher who is played by Redmayne alongside his theatrical and clever co-pilot, Amelia Wren played by Jones in this unique and unlikely pairing loosely based on the meteorologist’s 1862 charter expedition with Henry Coxwell (Jones’s fictional Amelia Wren replaces Coxwell in the film) to study the earth’s weather patterns riding a giant hot air balloon.

In the trailer, Glaisher is seen having difficulties in finding a benefactor for his research until he is told to talk to ‘the mad woman’, pertaining to Jones’s character who has a flare for the dramatic. Their journey is not a walk in the park though, as can be seen in the trailer, the duo goes through a lot of difficult and horrific ordeals like chaotic storms, equipment malfunctioning, oxygen deprivation. and near sub-zero temperatures.

Key scenes in the trailer are as follows: When the balloon was tossed around when they were in the midst of the storm with Wren holding on for dear life, the female pilot desperately encouraging Glaisher to stay alive in his bout with hypothermia, the gas release valve freezing over which led to Wren needing to dangerously climb up the balloon, and trying to stave away hypothermia herself. The dangers that the protagonists faces shown in the trailer are real, and given the clunky technology during that time, one could only imagine the thoughts running through their minds in their ground-breaking venture into the unknown.

The film’s visuals also look amazing. From the picturesque 1862 London to the turbulent sequences when the characters face a road block in their aerial excursion will leave audiences out of breath in Glaisher and Wren’s epic journey.

This was also a reunion of sorts for Jones and Redmayne as the two actors had previously worked together in the movie The Theory of Everything back in 2014.

Himseh Patel (EastEnders, Damned), Phoebe Fox (Life in Squares), Tom Courtenay (45 Years, The Queen’s Corgi), and Vincent Perez (Queen of the Damned, Hochelaga, Land of Souls) are also featured in the movie.

Aeronauts will premiere on November 4 in the UK, December 6 in the US and will premiere 20th December on Amazon Prime.
