Sam Smith goes from he/him to they/them pronouns

Sam Smith is taking a step towards a major change as they embrace their gender identity. The four-time Grammy-winner announced on Friday that they prefer to be referred to with the pronouns “they” and “them”.

The “How Do You Sleep?” singer made their announcement on social media gaining support from their massive fan base. Smith shared a series of posts on Twitter with one writing:

“Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”

Smith then explained that announcing their decision was something nerve-wracking for them. They say that “I care too much about what people think but f**k it!” While the recording artist understands that mistakes will be made along the way their only plea is that we should at least try. They then expressed their hope that they can be seen the way they see themselves.

Not only that, but Smith also hopes that their transition to they/them pronouns will pave the way to help others. However, they do admit that they aren’t ready to speak about being nonbinary at length just yet.

“So, for now, I just want to be VISIBLE and open. If you have questions and are wondering what this all means I’ll try my best to explain.” The singer then went on to credit a number of activists in the LGBTQ community who helped them toward a better understanding of themselves.
