Brisbane Painting Classes
Brisbane Painting Classes is a vibrant and welcoming boutique art school founded by Master Artist Marcel Desbiens in 2005. Housed in a large, light-filled warehouse in Albion, Brisbane Painting Classes offers a wide range of courses and workshops across a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolour, drawing, charcoal and pastel, at a range of levels from absolute beginners through to those seeking to refine and extend their practice. They also offer seminars and workshops in art history and the business and marketing skills needed to work as a professional artist.
The school’s origins lie in the traditional techniques of oil painting, learned from the old masters like Caravaggio, Rubens and Rembrandt and arose from French Canadian artist Marcel Desbiens’ belief that anyone can paint if they are given the right instruction and support to apply the appropriate tools and techniques. The Foundation in Oils course developed by Marcel remains one of the school’s most popular and respected courses.
Using their tried and tested approach, Brisbane Painting Classes has helped thousands of students to develop their skills, as well as inspired many to pursue their art long term. Some students have even gone on to become award-winning artists themselves.

Atelier Art Classes
Atelier Art Classes seeks to maintain an environment where students can develop their fundamental understanding of fine art practices based on the traditional Atelier method. They help students achieve their artistic goals by guidance in the acquisition of sound knowledge of the visual world and the practical skills to convey these phenomena.
In a nutshell, they offer tangible, practical advice with solid theoretical basis, through plenty of demonstrations, examples and guided exercises for students to complete. All class tuition is tailored to the individual, and derived from the standard four-year Atelier program.
They offer very flexible, individual instruction in a variety of courses, casual classes, and workshops in the traditional fundamentals of form and tonal drawing, life drawing from the nude model, classical plaster cast, still life and landscape. They also offer classes in painting, primarily in oil paint, but occasionally offer workshops in pastels, water colours, and acrylics.
Students will learn to paint from the plaster cast, the still life, landscape en plein air, and finally the figure by painting the nude life model, over time learning to understand three dimensionality, light, atmosphere and design.

“Wayne, tonight’s teacher in life portrait, was really helpful in both explaining the techniques and giving me tips along the way whilst I was drawing and applying the technique. Towards the end of the lesson, I started to get the hang of it and learnt the technique.” – T.P.
