Robert Doyle resigns his position as Lord Mayor of Melbourne

After 7 weeks of uncertainty, Robert Doyle has officially resigned his position as Lord Mayor of Melbourne following the allegations of sexual misconduct against him. The claims were made by two other councillors in late 2017 and a report detailing misconduct, indecent assault and sexual harassment was presented to Doyle who has fiercely denied the allegations.

Nick Ruskin, Doyle’s layer, said in a statement that his client had felt he was denied fair justice during the investigation by the City of Melbourne. He went on to say that Doyle felt there was a lack of “natural justice” and that the burden of proof was switched to demand Doyle prove his innocence rather than prosecutors proving his guilt.

It was announced on Friday that the investigation into the allegations of Doyle would be delayed as he dealt with serious health issues. Ruskin said that Doyle has been sent to hospital to start “his recovery”.

Arron Wood, the now acting mayor, said that he spoke with Doyle over the phone before the news became public. Wood said that Doyle “didn’t sound good” and that his health had apparently “suffered significantly”.

Wood went on to say that Doyle “didn’t go into any great detail” and made vague references to his “high blood pressure” being the cause of his hospitalisation.

Doyle also quit his position as the chairman of Melbourne Health after a separate investigation revealed another woman had accused him of harassment during a hospital event.

Emma Page, Doyle’s wife, said that the claims against him have brought her husband to the “brink of being broken”.  She said that she knew her husband very well and that the allegations were not in “accord with the man I know”.

A City of Melbourne spokesperson said that they had been informed of Doyle’s resignation via his lawyers and that the “formalities of his resignation” would be completed soon. The investigation into the allegations against Doyle would continue according to the city council.

In order to fill the position of Lord Mayor the Victorian Electoral Commission is set to conduct a by-election. Wood said that he was unsure of when the election would take place but that it would only cover the position of mayor, not the entire city council.

On their first meeting of the year, city councillors will meet on Tuesday to discuss the investigation into Doyle. Stephen Mayne, a former councillor, said the city council should make the full report of the investigation available to the public.

Facebook has recently made significant changes to the way its News Feed functions causing a drop in user time which has led to a quarterly decline in users in both Canada and the US.

The changes have come as a result of persistent criticism of the news feed with Facebook playing a role in ad business, political agendas and having a broader social impact.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the changes would help the firm in the long run, also stating that 2017 had been “a strong year…but a hard one”.

These comments were made by Zuckerberg following the release of the social media giant’s latest results.

The success that Zuckerberg was referring to is evident in the data with the firms revenue rising a huge 47% to more than US$40 billion whilst their profits saw an even larger percentage increase up 56% to almost US$16 billion.

This rise in profits comes even despite the fact that new US laws introduced a one-off tax on overseas profits for businesses that cost Facebook US$2.3 billion.

Zuckerberg also said that he was firmly aware of the debate surrounding the utility of social media sites and wanted to make clear that he was determined to make the use of them “more meaningful”.

The changes include boosting interaction between friends and family by including more of this content on users’ feeds and reducing the frequency of ads and business content.

So far, the changes, which include less viral videos appearing on feeds, have reduced the time people spend on Facebook by approximately 50 million hours a day or 5%.

The update also included information on user growth and indicated that the speed at which users are growing has slowed over the last quarter. The firm reported that there were approximately 1.4 billion active users daily and a total of 2.13 billion active users a month.

Those numbers indicated a 14% increased from December 2016 but the year-on-year growth in September showed a 16% increase indicating a small slowdown.

The US and Canada bring in an “outsize share” of the ad revenue on Facebook and the users in this region declined by roughly 700,000 compared to the previous quarter.

Zuckerberg is committed to improving the user experience on Facebook and whilst there has been a lot of feedback from consumers about the changes, the long term health of the platform is front of mind.

Zuckerberg has only ever trusted his people and therefore the data is coming from his engineers. The changes will eventually encourage further engagement from users across the social media platform.

Arsenal has officially secured the service of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window. Whilst all of the focus at Arsenal has been on acquiring his services, the club has also been busy elsewhere.

Olivier Giroud has made a big move to Chelsea and four other players have also left the club after they narrowly missed out on West Brom captain Johnny Evans.

Giroud’s £18 million move to Chelsea has helped to earn back some of the fee payed for Aubameyang. Arsenal paid a huge £56 million for Aubameyang and he is set to be the clubs highest earner, at least until Mesut Ozil requests a higher wage.

The club has also loaned Mathieu Debuchy to St Etienne for a smaller fee and Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Chuba Akpom have been loaned to Angers and Sint-Truidense, respectively.

Both of the loaned out players are highly regarded at the Emirates only leaving in search of first team opportunities. Both are set to return to the club in the summer.

Debuchy has struggled for game time at Arsenal following a bright start having only appeared 30 times for the North London club. He has previously left on loan in the 2015-16 season in search of first team opportunities.

The French international is in the final six months of his contract and looks set to be released by Arsenal at the end of the season given the 32 year olds age.

Arsenal’s main drive behind the sales of Giroud and Debuchy is to free up their wage bill in order to stay in line with the new Premier League guidelines.

The North London club has also loaned out Krystian Bielick who has joined Walsall until the end of the season.

Arsenal was also in search of a quality defender in need of consolidating their defence and went in search of West Brom’s Johnny Evans.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, the money they spent on Aubameyang and the funds required for Ozil’s new deal meant that they were unable to match the demands of West Brom.

Arsenal is currently struggling in the Premier League sitting in 6th place and a notable way behind a Champions League place. They will be hoping that the addition of Aubameyang will help to propel them back into a Champions League place having missed out last season as well.

The Premier League winter transfer window closed on January 31 and won’t open again until July.

Man convicted in case of Finsbury Park Mosque attack

Darren Osborne, a 48-year-old British man was convicted last Thursday for his responsibility in the case of an attack on a London mosque. Osborne was found to have driven a van into a crowd of Muslim worshippers outside of the mosque, killing one individual and wounding another 9.

Osborne denied responsibility of the attack that occurred at the Finsbury Park Mosque in June of last year. He did however admit that he was hoping to kill the leader of the Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, as well as Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London.

Following an 8 day trial in the Woolwich Crown Court, the jurors took only an hour to decide that Osbourne was guilty in the charges of murder and attempted murder.

The court examined evidence that suggested Osborne was very quickly radicalised by far-right ideology. Sarah Andrews, Osborne’s partner, said that he developed his Islamophobic views over the space of a few weeks prior to the attack.

Andrews said that Osborne seemed to have become very obsessed with Muslims in general. She said that he had consume a great deal of right-wing media and appeared to be “brainwashed”. Police searches of his property showed that he had use the internet to search for the EDL (English Defence League) which is a well-known anti-Muslim group.

There was also evidence that Osborne has received an automated message from the deputy leader of Britain First, Jayda Fransen. Britain First is another anti-Muslim group that posts inflammatory videos damning Islam, with some shared by Donald Trump last year.

As the trial came to its end, the court found the Osborne had deliberately driven his van into the crowd at the Finsbury Park Mosque, killing 51-year-old Markam Ali. Ali has apparently collapsed before the attack but onlookers said they saw that he was alive before the van hit him.

Osborne said that he was not the one driving the van, instead passing the blame to someone named “Dave” who had fled the scene. He did however admit to planning to attack a pro-Palestinian march which he thought Jeremy Corbyn would be attending.

Osborne said that if he had the chance to kill both Corbyn and Khan it would have been “like winning the lottery”. He referred to killing Corbyn as removing “another terrorist” from London’s streets.

The attack at the mosque followed Islamic terrorist attack in London earlier in 2017. These included a bomb detonating at an Ariana Grande show in Manchester arena that killed 22 as well as an attack on London Bridge that killed 8.
