The state of Tasmanian football is not looking good

There has recently been growing attention on Tasmania for the perilous relationship it now has with AFL football. Originally the traditional heartland of AFL, Tasmanian football has been in a consistent decline over the last couple of years.

This is most clear in the fact the Hugh Dixon from Freemantle has been the only Tasmanian player to be drafted to the mainland over the last 2 years. Now it seems that the situation is reaching a crisis point.

Recently it was announced that the Tasmanian State League or TSL was losing the Burnie Dockers because of a lack of numbers. The Devonport team has also recently revealed it was leaving competitive football because of similar reasons.

Adding to this issue is the news that the AFL has taken its financial support for the Gold Coast from $5.5 million to $25 million AUD. This has led many to believe that the AFL are more willing to support a struggling Queensland than a struggling Tasmania.

The AFL has historically argued that establishing a team in Tasmania was not financially justifiable given the climate of the Tasmanian economy. Some have said while this may be true the fact that the Gold Coast is being bailed out shows a level of favouritism.

Many have argued that Tasmania could in fact support and AFL team if it was given the financial support that Queensland is getting.  They say that the Gold Coast would not be able to support a team unless it was getting support from the AFL.

Others have speculated that the reasons for a lack of funding and interest in Tasmanian football were that many people were leaving the state altogether. The population of Tasmania has decreased over the years as more people look for jobs on mainland Australia.

This has resulted in Tasmania having fewer people to recruit as players and less people to attend games. While there is no shortage of amateur players they are not filtering through the system fast enough to create a competitive pool of elite AFL players.

Many commentators have said that if Tasmania was given the same attention and patience as other states is could easily resurrect its presence in the AFL. For a lot of people this represents another example of Tasmania being sidelined by mainland Australia.

For now, Tasmanian AFL fans will have to be patient and hope for the best. While AFL executives have promised that they have a plan for Tasmania it has yet to be seen how meaningful that plan will be.

Melbourne University students to complete consent course

In an attempt to encourage safe relationships between students, and people in general, the University of Melbourne will be asking new student to complete an online sexual harassment course.

The university has said that it will be a requirement for students to complete the 90-minute online course in order to accept their offer. The course has been developed by Australian and UK academics and contains a variety of quizzes and cartoon scenarios.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University, Professor Richard James, said that the evidence-based course was designed to “strengthen the university’s culture, policies and practices”.

The course aims to teach students about the rights and wrongs of sexual relationships and to develop a better understanding of how to participate in a safe and respectful relationship.  Whilst the majority of cases may be geared towards women, the course does incorporate the reverse and highlights the need have an elevated level of respect for sexual partners.

The course has also been taken up by a number of other leading universities around Australia including the University of Sydney, Adelaide University, UniSA and Flinders University. In addition to the quizzes and scenarios, the course also provides advice for students completing it and goes beyond sex itself delving into respectful and safe relationships in general.

The announcement of the e-learning course comes following numerous reports stating the effect that sexual harassment and assault is having on university students in the current era.

There have been a number of cases over the last two years highlighting the potential for sexual harassment to occur inside universities with specific reference to University colleges.

A number of top colleges around the country have been asked to conduct compulsory information’s sessions on sexual harassment and respecting women. Most of this comes following Elizabeth Broderick’s cultural assessment of Sydney University in 2017.

One report last year stated that there was approximately one in every five university students being sexually harassed in 2016 whether that was on campus, on their journey to and/or from campus or at a university-related event.

1.6% of students have also been found to have been sexually assaulted in the last 2 years from a Human Rights Commission report.

AI war to begin following the release of Apple’s HomePod

The newest smart speaker was released by Apple on Friday and the luxury tech company have revealed that they spent six years developing it. Smart speakers have become one of the most advanced gadgets on the market since being released.

Those at Apple are said they gathered “the biggest audio team on the planet” in designing and manufacturing the smart speaker. The tech company is set to go head-to-head with Amazon in its quest to be the dominant commercial organisation in Artificial Intelligence.

Both Amazon and Google have both already released smart speakers with the Google Home currently leading the Australian market.

Experts have predicted that the launch of the HomePod could see the total number of products with artificial intelligence to double inside Australian homes over the next twelve months. This is despite the fact that many people are still unconvinced that their privacy will remain protected should they invest in artificially intelligent devices.

Amazon first introduced its smart speaker technology into US homes more than three years ago, however the senior director of audio design and engineering, Gary Geaves, said that Apple had spent years perfecting its model.

Mr Geaves that the process “from conception…to actual execution took more than six years” and reasoned that when introducing a completely new product “there isn’t a deadline”.

Apple would have wanted to get its release right after the success of Amazon’s Alexa in American homes and the earlier release of the Google Home and Google Home Mini.

Apple went above and beyond in their designing and testing of the speaker, even creating a custom-designed audio chamber “built specifically for HomePod development”.

The company’s gamble comes in the price range with it costing more than double that of the latest Amazon release, the Amazon Echo Plus. Amazon’s latest release is due to arrive in Australia this week as well, placing even greater competition on Apple.

Foad Fadaghi, the managing director at Telsyte, said that he believes up to 20% of Australians could be using products with artificial intelligence by Christmas. These numbers are based on the US take up of these smart speakers and the release of Apple’s newest innovation should spur sales.

He said that one of the biggest factors that would influence this is the positive reception the HomePod would likely receive from “Apple-buying households that don’t just have Apple products, but services”.

Apple will be hoping that the release of the HomePod is a big success and can place further pressure on Amazon and Google following the lower-than-expected sales performance of the iPhone X released late last year.

Kim Kardashian under fire for topless photo taken by daughter

While it’s not surprising for Kim Kardashian to take a suggestive photo and post it on Instagram, fans have started a fierce debate about the apparent inappropriateness of her most recent upload.  While she has gotten in trouble in the past for her hairstyle and see-through swimsuits, she is now being criticised for letting her daughter take a photo of her nude back.

Kim recently shared a photo of her from a photoshoot on the beach. In the image she was sporting what were referred to as “Bo Derek” braids and was heavily criticized by some fans who saw it as an appropriation of black culture.

A few hours after posting the controversial beach photo, Kim uploaded yet another scandalous picture. This time because it was of her nude back while crediting her young daughter, North West, for taking the photo.

In the photo, Kim is effectively topless while holding he undone bra close to her chest, obscuring her breasts with her arms. In the photo’s caption, Kim credited North West, her oldest child of 4, for taking the picture.

While there was a huge spectrum of reaction to the photo, Kim’s Instagram fans were split in debate about whether the image was inappropriate for a child to have taken. Because the photo was considered sexually suggestive, many were appalled that Kim would allow her child to take the picture.

Many respondents accused Kim’s actions of being “sick” and “creepy”. Other said that she was setting a bad example for her daughter.  Some even went as far as to say her long-running reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, should be investigated by Child Protective Services.

Some commenters said that if an average person had done this they would have been scrutinised by social services. Many speculated that North would take an unhealthy lesson from the photo and begin to emulate her mother’s sexuality at a young age.

Many defended Kim by saying that North might have taken the photo without permission and that Kim decided it was appropriate to upload to social media. Others outright defended the entire affair, saying that there was nothing shameful or inappropriate about photo.

Many others said that Kim was setting a good example for her daughter in that she should not be ashamed of her body. Many more commenters said that the reactionary nature of moralising fans was ridiculous and that it wasn’t inappropriate for a mother to be nude in front of her child.

A whole different section of responses ignored the moral debate and simply praised North on her photography skills. Many said that for a 4 year old her framing of the photo was quite advanced.

Some other commenters speculated that it was not North taking the photo at all and that Kim was lying to get attention. They argued that the reflection of the photo taker in the mirror was not tall enough to be North and that since the face is obscured it could be anyone.

Anthony Mundine speaks anti-gay views after quitting reality show

Anthony Mundine, a famous retired Australian boxer has recently left the reality show ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” while holding back tears and speaking of missing his children. Mundine spoke of how he was unable to block out his emotions and could not spend any more time away from his family.

However, Mundine has attracted harsh criticism for his outspoken views against homosexuality. Before leaving for the reality show he said in an interview that the though homosexuality was wrong and that gay people “confuse society”.

He has now become the second contestant to leave the show with Bernard Tomic, a tennis player, departing last week. Mundine told Kerry Armstrong, another contestant, that he had been “struggling” and was missing his family over the almost two weeks he was in the jungle.

After leaving the camp, Mundine posted on social media claiming that while he thought it was an “incredible experience” he was missing his family and had “accomplished everything” he wanted to.

While many people sympathised with his reasons for leaving the show, his renewed anti-gay rhetoric has caused a public outcry against him. Mundine took the chance to reveal even more of his views on homosexuality to reporters who were there to cover his exit from the show.

Mundine told reporters that the believed capital punishment would work to deter homosexual behaviour and keep it “behind closed doors”. Mundine spoke fondly of past decades where gay people were afraid to reveal their nature and had secret relationships outside of the public eye.

He said that if society was structured to severely punish homosexual behaviour then gay people would stop altogether for fear of persecution.  He said that gay people would likely “think twice” before pursuing what he considers to be an immoral lifestyle.

Mundine also said that he was strongly against open representation of LGBTI culture and social justice. He claimed that as gay or transgender people got more rights it would encourage paedophiles to demand that their sexuality be legitimised.

He said that LGBTI people won’t be satisfied “until they have primary school kids being gay”. He was reported saying that he thinks he is speaking the truth and that he did not care about what gay people do because “the creator” would judge them after death.

It is speculated that Mundine was paid large sums of money to appear on the reality show. It was believed he would draw a wider audience because of his history as football player and boxer.

Many commentators on social media have decried Mundine as a sporting legend, saying the he is a national disgrace and should not have been given a platform from which to spread his controversial opinions.

Why Danny McBride took on the son of Crocodile Dundee

It is the question that many have been asking since it was revealed that Danny McBride would be playing the role of the son of Mick “Crocodile” Dundee – Why him?

The comedy man stars alongside some of Australia’s most well-known and popular movie stars in the cheeky movie trailer aimed at encouraging Americans to plan a visit to Australia.

The commercial aired during Sunday’s Super Bowl 52 in a promotion from Tourism Australia starring Chris Hemsworth, Russel Crowe, Margot Robbie and Hugh Jackman. The advertisement was met with laughter and intrigue.

The commercial was staged as a movie trailer for an upcoming film ‘Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home in which McBride played Dundee’s American son. The aim of the ad was to convince viewers that if it was good enough for Crocodile Dundee’s son, then it’s good enough for them.

McBride has since opened up on how he ended up in the unlikely role saying “I always like to choose things that I think will be fun to do” regardless of the format. He had some appraisal for the approach to the skit by Tourism Australia saying that he thought it was a completely “out-of-the-box approach”.

The campaign was evidently trying to trick viewers into believing that a new movie was on the way and in explaining why, McBride couldn’t help but have a little giggle.

He thought that it would “be fun just to mess with people” and that it would get people asking questions and talking about it. He said that he believed people would find the commercial both funny and interesting whilst questioning the motive of it.

Even though viewers are now aware that it was all a bit of a joke, there are many left wishing that it was in fact going to be a real movie. In the Northern Territory, a newspaper has begun a petition to encourage those in the ad to follow through and produce the latest Dundee movie.

When asked if he would take on the role in a real movie, McBride said he wasn’t sure but said that working with Chris Hemsworth was “a blast” and that whilst he didn’t know finished by saying, “Maybe something will come out of it, we’ll see”.

The commercial was aired during the 52nd Super Bowl on Sunday and was one of many large scale ads to air during the event. Super Bowl ads have become a huge part of the Super Bowl since 2000 with companies eager to get their brand on the biggest stage.

No-sex law proposed for Australian MPs

The Australian Parliament has proposed a no-sex law stopping relationships between staff following the scandal involving Barnaby Joyce and the US congress’s move to introduce a ‘no-fraternising law’.

The Barnaby Joyce scandal that only arose this week has encouraged Cathy McGowan, the Independent member for IndI to raise the question of a ‘sex ban’ that would apply to MPs not allowing them to get close and personal after hours.

The member for Indi was worried that Parliament was in fact falling behind in the appropriate corporate and community practices and said that there needed to be “clear expectations about behaviour”.

McGowan stopped short of offering legislation for the appeal however believed that it was a necessary ban in order to maintain “good workplace practice”.

The appeal comes following the introduction of a law that banned sex between members of the US Congress and other staff that was passed via unanimous vote at the US House of Representatives this week.

Much of the reasoning behind the law was to give more junior staff members a chance to stand up for themselves and also reduce the likelihood of sexual harassment.

This has become somewhat of a global trend with many members of parliament, both in Australia and overseas, getting behind the law to ban sex between staff.

There are questions as to whether this is more of a reflex reaction to the Barnaby Joyce Scandal than a necessity in Australian Parliament.

Despite much of the positive reception to the idea, shadow attorney-general, Mark Dreyfus, said that he was shocked by the appeal and was hopeful that in no instance would Australian Parliaments “ever go down that path “ of introducing a ‘no-sex law’.

He reasoned that “relations between people are complicated” and it needs to be well thought through before there is any criminalisation of the act.

Mr Dreyfus did, however, admit that “sex in the office is always going to present problems” but that legislating relationships between members of parliament was another question.

Barnaby Joyce revealed earlier this year that he was expecting a baby with an ex-staff member of his, Vicki Campion. This comes following his split from his 24-year long marriage with wife Natalie Joyce.

Mr Joyce returned to parliament in December this year following the New England bi-election as a result of the dual-citizenship scandal.

There is currently no word on whether the two are involved in a serious relationship however there are multiple reports saying that Ms Campion has started living with Joyce with the baby expected to be due in April.

Sydney’s best swimming locations

Australia is home to the world’s best beaches and Sydney is lucky enough to have an abundance of beaches and swimming spots all situated within a short ride from the city.

As summer goes on it can get a little boring going to the same beach or swimming whole every time and with so much to offer, you’d be mad not to try somewhere new. The best swimming spots are often right around the corner, you just need to look a little harder.

Little Bay

Situated just south of the city, Little Bay is a swimming paradise. Protected by the rocky headlands, it’s a great place for snorkelling as there is a rich ecosystem beneath the surface.

Milk Beach

Providing incredible views of the city, Milk Beach is a stunning location. The water is clear, it’s only 15 minutes from the city and it sits in the Sydney Harbour National Park. The walking track to the beach is beautiful as well and continues along the coast for 1.8km.

Congwong Beach

A quiet beach that allows a nice escape from the waves of some of the bigger beaches positioned on the opposite side of the headland. It sits in the Botany Bay National Park next to the New South Wales Golf Club, perfect for a lazy afternoon wind down.

Wylie’s Baths

This is the ultimate swimming location with yoga classes and a restaurant available next to the 50 metre tidal pool at Coogee. With beautiful views of the ocean and even the option of a massage, there isn’t a more lux outdoor swimming experience.

Wattamolla

Whilst this one is a bit more of a drive, it’s certainly worth it once you’re there. Found deep in the Royal National Park, this place has it all with a beach, lagoon and a waterfall it’s a great day out for everyone. You can even camp nearby and wake up to one of the best swims in Sydney.

Resolute Beach

For a remote beach lay down, Resolute Beach is the place to be. Only accessible via an 8 kilometre walking track, it can seem like a long way, but it’s worth it. You’ll likely have the beach to yourself and with views across the bay to Palm Beach and Pittwater it’s a no-brainer.

Kurnell Beach

Beautifully crisp and clean water is the highlight of this beach. It’s a good alternative to Cronulla, situated just over the headland, and offers a wealth of life under water.

Finding a nice bar in Sydney to relax and have a drink with friends can be a great way to finish a long day of swimming and fun at the beach. Check out these bars for a good time.
