Tensions between Aussie snowboarders rise at Winter Olympics

Having being replaced as Australia’s best snowboarder, Alex Pullin chose not to attend the winners ceremony as fellow Australian Jarryd Hughes celebrated his silver medal for snowboard cross in Pyeongchang.

Facing fierce competition, Hughes was able win silver at the Pheonix Snow Park men’s final. He fell just behind world champion and defending gold medallist from France, Pierre Vaultier.

Pullin, who was the second Australian competitor in the final, had a crash halfway through the race and did not cross the finish line. Pullin left the course without speaking to Hughes as long-time tensions between the two snowboarders became apparent.

However, Pullin did make an appearance at Hughes’s medal celebration party. Despite this Pullin’s boycott of the podium prompted OWIA (Olympic Winter Institute) manager Geoff Lipshut to confirm that there was a history of “personal issues” between Hughes and Pullin.

Lipshut told reporters that the institute had “put a process in place” whereby all athletes would need to respect each other during the games. He went on to say that the process needed only to make sure that they are happy to be on the same team and “get on well enough to do their sport”, not asking for anything more.

Hughes does all of his training separate to Pullin as well as many other snowboard riders in Australia’s team. The animosity between Pullin and Hughes follows on from a funding argument that occurred during the Sochi Winter Olympic games.

At the Sochi games many Australian snowboarders, including Hughes, complained that Pullin was getting too much attention and funding whilst they were “team outcast”. Lipshut addressed this point, saying that the funding issues had been resolved and that there was no open animosity between athletes in the lead-up to the current games.

Lipshut went on to say that he lead-in to the current games was rehearsed. He said that athletes were told to that they were sharing a team and they had to “get used to it”.

Silver winner Hughes said that snowboarding was “an individual sport” whereby even teammates “want to beat each other”.  He went on to say that he was grateful for the program that had accounted for the team dynamic and said he would not have made it to the current games without it.

Hughes said that he was glad he saw “all the hard work paying off” and that the lead-up was “a rough year but we made it work”.

Hughes has joined Scotty James and Matt Graham as the Australians who have so far won medal in the Pyeongchang games.

There are reports coming out of the AFL that live trading of listed players in on the agenda as they AFL looks to make changes to Draft Night.

Richmond’s assistant coach, Justin Leppitsch, said that he supports the idea believing that it would be beneficial for both the players and the clubs.

It is looking increasingly likely that the AFL will adopt the US style live draft trading where clubs are able to trade picks and determine the value of each clubs selections as they go. This would add a completely new element to the draft and potentially create a ‘needs-based’ system.

The addition of trading listed players is also on the table which would likely see the draft be extended to two days instead of just the one night.

Leppitsch said that this style of draft works “everywhere else in the world” and that there is no reason it wouldn’t work here in the AFL.

He continued to say that he believed it needed to happen sooner rather than later as it would be “only a good thing” for the competition allowing clubs to improve themselves dramatically on draft night “without the detriment to the player”.

The idea behind it is that it would more than likely give players a greater opportunity to make it at the highest level with clubs more willing to move players on with the knowledge of draft picks and value.

It also provides clubs with the opportunity to acquire the desired talent for their specific needs on draft night being able to assess who is left and the potential rises in picks or acquisition of listed players available.

Leppitsch also said that he was adamant that clubs would not be trading their best players during this live trading but would more than likely be able to move players on that were not getting the desired opportunity.

He finished by saying that when it comes down to the details of the idea “there actually more positives than negatives”.

The AFL has been discussing the prospect of live trading of draft picks however the introduction of live trading of players has only recently been put forward.

The competition is seeking to make draft night a more inclusive event that allows clubs to gain greater benefits based on those in the draft and the picks they hold.

It appears that Eugenie Bouchard has served a punishing ace to her now famous Super Bowl date via an Instagram post from her Sports Illustrated shoot.

The Canadian tennis star appears to have sent a rush of rumours around the world and may have crushed the heart of the public’s dream couple after all.

Having appeared in the Sports Illustrated photo shoot for the second year in a row, Bouchard appeared to make a suggestive Instagram post on Wednesday.

In case you don’t remember, at last year’s Super Bowl LI John Goehrke placed his faith in the almighty New England Patriots and bet a date with Eugenie Bouchard if they were to come back from 25 points down.

She took the bet and as Tom Brady does he led the Patriots to another win. Goerhke got his date as the two went to an NBA game together receiving immense media attention. However, after this, it appeared that Goerhrke went off the radar and was never to be seen again.

That was until this year’s Super Bowl when in the lead up, Goerhkre again appeared on Bouchard’s social media channels. They were spotted at the beach in Miami before being seen together at the Super Bowl in Minnesota.

It appeared that the two had been dating and were in fact a couple – weren’t they?

They released a video in which they talked about their relationship in a Q&A format before leaving everyone on edge as Bouchard quickly ended it before revealing the true nature of their relationship.

We seemed to get the answer to the question we had all been asking on Wednesday when Bouchard posted an image on Instagram from her Sports Illustrated shoot with the caption, “So I’m discovering Valentine’s Day is a lot less fun when you’re single.”

This was followed up with a reply to Lindsey Vonn’s Tweet asking for a Valentine and Bouchard was more than happy to assist all but confirming the Instagram post.

Hopefully this is just Bouchard trying to throw everyone off the trail in attempt at maintaining privacy, otherwise our faith in online love may be gone forever.

Interestingly, Goerhke retweeted Bouchard’s video from the Sports Illustrated shoot only a day earlier and seeing the rest of her posts won’t be helping any of the pain if has been blindsided.

Eugenie Bouchard hasn’t been shy to advertise her second appearance in the famous magazines shoot in recent days posting numerous videos and images from the modelling session.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has officially joined the cast of the upcoming feature film adaptation of the 2015 cult short film Kung Fury. David Hasselhoff and Michael Fassbender have already accepted roles in the action-comedy.

With Schwarzenegger already famous for his 80’s action-hero roles, many have regarded his joining the cast of Kung Fury as a perfect fit. The star of cult classic films like Total Recall, Predator and Terminator is said to have taken the role of the American president in David Sandberg’s new film which is set to begin shooting in Europe and the United States this summer.

Kung Fury was a cult hit upon its release in 2015. Combining elements of 80’s futurism, martial arts, police drama and internet culture, the film was an instant success gaining over 40 million views around the world.

Sandberg, a Swedish filmmaker and creator of the original short film will play the lead role while being supported by Michael Fassbender. Sandberg’s character is simply known as “the greatest damn cop of all time”.

Seth Grahame-Smith, Aaron Schmidt and David Katzenberg will produce the film for KatzSmith Productions which was hugely successful in its recent remake of Stephen King’s It. B-Reel film’s Philip Westgren will also produce alongside Conor McCaughen.

The original film involved the main character, a police detective who uses Kung Fu, travelling between different stylised worlds meeting interesting characters and battling a larger threat.

The movie is set in Miami in 1985, a city which is protected by the titular Kung Fury and his team of Thundercops. The Thundercops are an elite police force assembled from different times and places in history in order to challenge their arch nemesis, King Fuhrer (Adolf Hitler).

The seemingly ridiculous and over-the-top nature of the setting has drawn a wide audience around the world. The original film, having impressive visuals for its small budget, is speculated to be even more of a visual spectacle with a large production team behind it this time around.

The film is set to be introduced to Berlin’s European Film Market for backing. Rumours are that many potential buyers are already eager to put their money behind the film.

Debut of AFLX meets widespread approval by players and coaches

The new spin-off of AFL named ‘AFLX’ has gotten off to a good start with coaches, players and fans all singing its praises. This new take on Australian football uses a rectangular field and a change of rules to bring a breath of fresh air to an age old sport.

This inaugural match between Geelong and Freemantle teams was hosted at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide on Thursday night as the first of 6 planned matches of ALFX set for the AFL’s 2018 pre-season.  The match was universally hailed as a triumph by those in attendance and watching from home.

The experiment of AFLX is set to be a surprising success as fans old and new are drawn to the new game’s fast point scoring format. While met with scepticism from many in the AFL community it’s safe to say that many of them are pleasantly surprised by Thursday night’s game.

Fans enjoyed the spectacle while players expressed their love for the change up in play. Coaches welcomed the new wave of interest in the sport that AFLX is starting to generate.

There were roughly 10,253 fans in attendance at AFLX’s first game. Chris Scott, the coach for Geelong, expressed how impressed he was with how the game went.

Scott revealed that he thought the new format was not only appealing to long-time footy fans but would be a great way to renew interest in children about Australian Rules football. He said that the club “really supports the concept”.

Scott went on to say that he thought the game not only had a “good chance at the top level” but was likely to be successful “at the amateur level” as well as overseas.  He expressed that he shared a view with many other coaches that traditional AFL, with a large field and 18 players, wasn’t ideal for children to begin with.

Scott said that he thought the new format was a great way for fans and future players to learn the fundamentals of footy in an approachable way. When asked about those who have shunned AFLX for its flashy marketing and LED goal posts, Scott simply said “too bad”.

Scott compared negative comments about AFLX with those spoken of Twenty20 cricket which he said was “succeeding in spite of them”. Scott is not alone in his views with many other coaches warming up to AFLX despite disapproval from traditionalists.

The players on the day revealed how much they enjoyed the new format, citing the fast paced nature of the game being a welcome challenge. Acting captain for Freemantle, Michel Walters, said it was “a fun game” and that it mixed the need to play as a team and individually.

Hells Angels bikie buried in Thailand

Wayne Schneider’s beaten body was found buried in a shallow grave in Pattaya, Thailand.

Schneider, a high ranking bikie was considered one of the toughest in the underworld of bikie gangs and drug trafficking but he had little chance when 5 men attacked him in November 2015.

On Thursday, an analysis into his cause of death is set to return to the NSW Coroner’s office in Sydney.

Schneider was living in Thailand to evade the Australian police who in late 2012 had discovered two methamphetamine labs in the south-west of Sydney. He has been staying in the coastal town of Pattaya, 140km out of Bangkok – a town well-known for its crime gangs and sex tourism.

He had been living there with another Australian, Antonia Bagnato, who had also been living there having fled Australia in 2014 for following the murder of Bradley Dillon.

Bagnato and Schneider became neighbours and would often drink together. The two had become friends at a Sydney gym and were said to be involved in drug-related crime in Thailand.

However, in November 2015, Bagnato had turned on Schneider and brought masked associates with him as they forced Schneider into a Ute before tying him to a char and beating him to unconsciousness.

It is believed that the assailants left Schneider tied to a chair for hours before returning where he may have already been dead.

In the early hours of the next morning, Bagnato and his associates drove Schneider to a forest 30km away and buried him in a 1.8m deep grave.

It didn’t take the Thai police long to find the body as they followed the GPS signal of the Ute to the location where the grassy floor had clearly been disrupted by a vehicle. The Police followed the track before finding the turned earth and discovering the body.

Schneider had visible wounds to his head with a fractured eye socket and blood oozing from the side of his head. He is also said to have had a broken neck.

The police successfully tracked down the renter of the Ute, Mr Bagnato’s wife and immediately issues a warrant for Bagnato. He was found days later in a Cambodian motel in Phnom Penh.

Bagnato has since been successfully convicted of the Schneider murder and is on death row at the infmaous Bang Kwang Central Prison in Bangkok.

The cause of death has been re-opened by a NSW coroner following the discussions that Schneider may have died alone in the house having been left for a long time before the assailants returned to dispose of his body.

Mr Schneider’s body was returned to Sydney in 2015 where it was cremated.
