How will your team go in NRL round 4?

The fourth round of the NRL kicks off tonight – how will your team fare?

The first game will be between a Cowboys side gunning for redemption and the Panthers. There are very few teams in the competition that can face a halves combination of Johnathan Thurston and Michael Morgan, and the game will be in Townsville, so I’ll tip the Cowboys to come roaring back into form and win by a couple of tries.

On Friday afternoon the Rabbitohs play the Bulldogs. The public holiday allows the kick-off to be at 4:10, so expect a decent crowd despite the woeful performance of both teams so far. Neither side looks great this year, so expect a close game. Souths did have an impressive win over Manly last week, and they should take some confidence from that. Rabbitohs to win – but not by much.

Friday night will see a replay of the 2016 NRL grand final when the Sharks face the Storm. Both sides have lost key players since then, but the Storm look to have replaced theirs better. The Storm will almost always be the favourites whenever they play, and they should win. Cronulla, however, could do a lot of damage if they click, as they have a lot of lethal outside backs.

The Saturday games will be interesting. The first will be at Allianz with the Roosters taking on the undefeated Warriors. The New Zealand side has been impressive so far this season, and look like they are finally playing to their potential. The Roosters, on the other hand, have possibly the best side (on paper) in the NRL.

Given that their attack has clicked far more quickly than expected, I think that the Roosters will outpoint the Warriors in a high scoring game.

Saturday also sees the Sea Eagles playing against the Raiders at Brookvale Oval (sorry, Lottoland). While Manly were thoroughly beaten last week by Souths, they are a different beast altogether at Fortress Brookie. Since there are no bridges to cross this week, the Manly faithful will turn up to watch their team sneak over the line.

On Sunday afternoon the Dragons play the Knights at WIN stadium. While Newcastle are a far better side than last year, St George are deservedly top of the table. Expect them to win at home comfortably.

The Broncos and Titans play off in a Queensland derby in Brisbane on Sunday night. Gold Coast are in disarray this year, while the home team are always a strong contender. Brisbane will win, but I don’t think their attack is strong enough to do it by much.

Wests Tigers and Parramatta on Monday afternoon will be close, because all of the Tigers games this year have been. The Eels also have a very underwhelming attack, so they won’t do much against the Tiger’s defensive wall. I think Wests will win, and by their biggest margin of the season (i.e. more than 2).

Make your wedding an unforgettable day

Many weddings have been ruined unintentionally by guests who pull out their smart phones, video recording equipment and stumble over each other during the ceremony, leaving a sea of arms and devices in the background taken by the professional wedding photographer.

Having a professional wedding photographer attend a wedding ceremony and reception means that you will be pleased with the outcome of the photos, and the guests and members of the wedding party can relax and trust the results of the image capturing to the hands of a professional.

Benefits of professional wedding photographer

Often many couples are choosing to have guests and family members have all their smart phones and devices banned from the ceremony, and place a moratorium on photos being posted to social media, in order to prevent stray and unflattering images from crawling across the internet.

Often couples will want to have their own Facebook page, or Instagram page for their wedding, so ensuring that a professional photographer is contracted and that all of the images of the wedding are of a professional grade will prevent shameful humiliation and embarrassment.

Scenarios where unflattering photos being circulated on social media can be prevented by ensuring that all guests are required to refrain from taking photos until dedicated times and designated areas within the reception and after the ceremony. Generally people are much better prepared to face a sea of cameras when they are in a better more relaxed mindset.

Some couples have instead decided to institute a complete ban on family amateur photography in order to protect their precious memories from being destroyed by being subjected to blogs where “top humiliating wedding photos” surface.

Professional wedding photographers offer discretion

Professional wedding photographer discretion is guaranteed when giving images to the married couple, and the couple can discuss image retouching services prior to any photographs being distributed via social media in order to preserve and promote the beauty and loveliness of a ceremony.

Some guests choose to share unflattering images of other guests in attendance, or moments that are less dignifying of the wedding party, causing a great deal of distress to the married couple and close friends and family.

Prevention of this type of social media mayhem is best through banning devices, smart phones and cameras being brought in by guests, and in contracting of the digital media professional. A qualified professional understands and sympathises with the wedding organisers, and will always work with the client in order to create and distribute the most beautiful and flattering images.

During a wedding, it is deeply respectful to simply participate as a guest, provide well wishes for the marrying couple, and pose with the bride and groom (bride and bride or groom and groom) as invited in order to assist the couple in having and preserving happy memories with their valued and treasured guests.

A professional wedding photographer helps all photography subjects at a formal occasion to feel relaxed, enjoy the process and to feel at their very best. Working with a highly trained and skilled individual is recommended for all couples considering having their formal ceremony recorded, regardless of the size or budget of the occasion.

This ensures that the right images and most lovely moments are recorded for posterity, and people who attended the wedding can then be appreciative of the professionalism and discretion done by the photographer years down the track where there are no regrettable moments caught on film by guests who are perhaps inebriated or acting inappropriately.

Trained industry professional can offer peace of mind

People generally spend thousands of dollars on a formal ceremony for their wedding or commitment ceremony, and even in microweddings where the budget is typically under $5000, the marrying couple generally still allocate a large budget for professional images and videography.

This ensures that the memories of the occasion are ones that they would prefer to see and to remember, and that years down the track as they are reviewing images and videos of the ceremony they are filled with joy and pleasure as to the investment of funds in contracting a professional with high recommendations.

Peace of mind can be gained from hiring a recognised industry expert, who has a portfolio of work that demonstrates clearly his or her attitude towards the work they do. Experience and attitude are evident in the portfolio of a wedding photographer, and he or she should also make available previous customer testimonials, and offer a back up or contingency plan in order to give peace of mind to his or her clients.

A wedding ceremony is generally a once off event in the life of a couple (or in the case of second marriages a very special occasion) and having a professional attend and record the day will give definite peace of mind that all of the time, money and effort expended by the couple will be shown in the images captured on the day. Beautiful memories should be respectfully captured, and only by the most trusted and reputable professionals.

How to move your family smoothly

Moving can be stressful as it is. However, when you throw kids into the mix, it becomes something that is nerve-wracking and disastrous, if not taken care of. It doesn’t matter if you are moving across states or down the street because change isn’t something that is welcomed by children. However, there are ways you can make the move easier and painless for both you and the kids.

Before we begin, you need to remember that much like adults; children don’t like saying goodbye to their familiar neighbourhoods. While adults can cope with some time, children’s immature cognition doesn’t allow them to understand why they are leaving their friends and area behind.

They cannot comprehend the reasons you need to move and why they need to go to another school where they know no one. Once you figure out what’s going on in your child’s mind, it will be much simpler for you to deal with the situation and bring them back on track.

Here are five tips which you can integrate into your plan for a hassle-free move.

1. Talk about the move

As soon as you know you will be moving, you need to share the news with your children. Make it an exciting time by ordering pizza and gathering around the table to have a simple conversation. Make the kids feel like they are a part of everything and tell them why you’re moving and selling the old house, especially if they are old enough to understand promotions and a new job.

Discuss everything and make sure you give them time to talk about how they feel too. Explain why you think the move is a good idea for the entire family and how they can explore new surroundings. Reassure them that all their possessions and toys will go with them to the new house, so they don’t feel like they have to leave everything behind.

2. Involve the kids in the move

Though you might not realise, children who are big enough can help you with the move and even make decluttering easier. Depending on their age, you can ask your kids to organise their toys, books and other belongings, so they don’t spend their time thinking about the move and look at you packing their stuff up.

Experts suggest that you give kids that are 6+ a chance to pack and decorate their boxes, so they feel like they are a part of things and are excited about unpacking the cartons once they reach the new house. When they have something to do, they will be less anxious, and that is a win-win for you.

If your kids are younger than 5 years and can’t pack their boxes, you can make them feel proud just by asking them to bring things from the kitchen to pack or even help you tape up the containers. The critical point to remember here is to delegate age-appropriate roles, so they don’t feel burdened by the responsibility.

3. Familiarise yourself with the new house

Families that move often suggest that you take the kids to the new house and neighborhood before the move if possible. Let them familiarize themselves with the surroundings and introduce them to the people in the community. Visiting the home is also an excellent way to get the kids excited about the move because you can ask them to choose their room and even plan where everything will go once you unpack.

Experts recommend that if the new place isn’t too far off or if you can somehow accommodate the visit into the weekend, then you plan on spending at least a day in the area where the house is. If the house is far away, then plan a weekend trip and stay at the nearest local hotel.

One reason this tip is recommended is because this visit will also give you a chance to tour the schools and visit the local library with the kids so both you and the kids have a good idea about what you can expect when you’re moving. Plus, if you’re moving into a small town, it will give your children a chance to bond with other children their age and make friends even before the move.

4. Keep your routine

One thing that kids depend on is routine. And when this routine gets disrupted during a move, it can wreak havoc on your life. So, the absolute best thing you can do is to stick to it even a day before the move. Yes, it’s hard to fit in a routine in between all the packing, planning and searching for good removalists, but you need to remember that this is something which will give your child a sense of security and your peace of mind and so you should try to make it happen.

When your kids can spend their day as they do normally, they will feel calm and won’t be as anxious about their move. It is also recommended that you keep bedtime and chore routines consistent after you move in.

5. Say goodbye to the old house

Even after you’ve kept everything calm and quiet during the move, you need to remember that this will be a significant change for your child. Before moving, host a party and invite all the friends and community members you and your child have connected to and ask everyone to exchange contact information like phone numbers and emails so your child can interact with old friends even after moving. You can also ask your child to write a story about their old home, draw a picture or even write a poem about it.

Remember that even after all that, moving can be hard for children and so you need to make it as comfortable as possible for them.

The best Autumn/Winter fashion trends for 2018

With sunlight decreasing and grey skies moving in, it’s safe to say Autumn is in full swing. To keep you from committing any fashion faux pas we’ve come through with the top trends to expect this Autumn/Winter 2018. Shop online for great deals on makeup, fashion and accessories delivered straight to your door.

Bright colours

Electric blue, punchy pink and ultraviolet purple are set to shake up your ideas of cold weather fashions. Forget about drab greys and bring colour back to your wardrobe this season with an on-trend bright coat or blazer.

Plaid and checks

If Summer is all florals then make Autumn your moment for plaid patterns a la Cher Horowitz. What was once oh so 90s is now coming back around on the trending radars. Ditch the plaid mini skirts for checkered pants or blazers to keep them in this decade.

Petite bags

Perhaps not the most practical of options but isn’t that typically high fashion? Any day you’re feeling minimalist is an opportunity to bring out your favourite tiny bag. Think faux quilted Chanel and crossbody clutches.

White boots

Channel the swinging 60s with a pair of pure white ankle boots. Spotted on celebs at nearly every Fashion Week show, they’re the statement item you need now. If you’re worried about making the plunge find a pair with mixed colours or materials such as white leather with a wooden block heel.

Sock boots

Over a year since Kanye created them and Kim Kardashian first wore them, sock boots have risen in the fashion ranks. The slim to the ankle, typically knitted style, is popular because of its versatility – they work with jeans and dresses, formal or casual. This Autumn/Winter we expect to see them continue their popularity if a cult celeb following is anything to go by.

Out with the old, in with the new

All the shopping you’re about to be doing is sure to put a strain on your wardrobe. Organise your bedroom storage now so it’s ready to fit all those trendy additions. First step; reduce the clutter by getting rid of anything you hardly ever wear. How can you tell? Here’s two wardrobe hacks to try:

  1. Put a piece of masking tape on every item of clothing and write an expiry date on it. This could be 2-4 weeks or 2-3 months from now, depending how ruthless you feel. Only remove the date when you wear that item of clothing. After the expiry date if the sticker remains then it’s time to admit the fact you’re no longer loving that style.
  2. Turn all your coat hangers so that they face the same way. Once you’ve worn something put it back in your closet with the hanger facing the opposite way. Mark a date in your diary or calendar when you’ll review how many hangers have been swapped and get rid of any pieces that after 3 months haven’t been worn. This hack is great for long-term items like coats that may only come out once every month in the transition weather.

Lavender is in

Pastels haven’t disappeared just yet but they have swapped sides of the colour wheel. Where once it was all about Millennial Pink, this season’s go to pastel shade is Lavender. It’s been spied on the runways in every way; from pastel powersuits to oversized knits, chic dresses and purple eyeshadow a major feature.

Dark lipsticks

Every Autumn/Winter we see the return of dark, brooding lips. This year seems no different with deep berry shades, dark reds and even black lipstick dominating the runways in London and New York.

Graphic eyeliner

Gone are the days for smoky kohl eyeliner. This season we’re seeing the return of graphic liquid liner looks in black and even colours. Wear a 60s flick with your white boots to channel all the best trends from the grooviest decade. Or take inspiration from Cleopatra with an Egyptian winged liner extending out toward your brow and into your crease. Keep the lines slim for a modern take on this classic look.

There’s more than enough here to keep you trending in the style stakes well into the next season.

An emotional Karl Schmid reveals he is HIV positive

Entertainment reporter with the ABC News Karl Schmid has come out as HIV positive after an alleged ten years of silence on his condition in an emotional and heart-wrenching post on Facebook.

Schmid, renowned for his coverage of The Academy Awards and other large-scale Hollywood events, was told to keep his secret for the sake of his reputation.

The reporter uncovered that he had been struggling with a split agenda, wanting to share his condition with the world but being heavily advised by industry professionals that it would mark the end of the career.

In addition, Schmid expressed fear regarding what the wider community would think of him, and that the stigma would “ruin him”.

But it was clear that the Los Angeles-based TV reporter had come to terms with his conditions and sought acceptance despite the disease.

Karl Schmid spoke from the bottom of his heart, with a loud and ringing statement that he just wanted “love and acceptance”.

Unafraid to reveal his human side, Schmid expressed that he was just an average Joe despite the fact that he is on television from time to time, and that to be loved by friends and family was all he wanted just like any other person.

Borrowing the words of author Mark Twain, Karl Schmid backed his message with his belief to be true to himself in order to be true to others. Schmid expressed the sentiment that to be truthful is to not have to remember anything you say.

Schmid ended his Facebook post with an empowering message. Addressed to the people going through the same ordeal as he did, Schmid stated to never doubt themselves over “three scary letters and one symbol”.

Karl Schmid’s HIV admission comes as an encouraging message in a social climate where anti-HIV stigma is often the most severe psychological or social issue that HIV positive people suffer every day, even within the LGTBQ community.

It is estimated that approximately only one in every three adults who are HIV positive are regularly seeing a clinician for their disease.

With his story of struggle, Schmid posted to Instagram later that day to express how pleasantly surprised and grateful he was at the effect of his admission.

He went on to say that he did not expect his story to create “such an impact.”

Since his post, Schmid has received an overwhelming outpour of positive support from his fans on social media.

What have we learnt from round 1 of the AFL?

After a strong season of AFLW, round 1 of the AFL proper kicked off last weekend. So what did we learn from the first games of the season?

Title contenders start right

The title favourites this year started off strongly, with the exception of the Crows. Richmond, GWS and Sydney all recorded wins, as did perennial contenders Geelong and Hawthorn.

The Sydney Swans were particularly impressive – travelling to Perth and recording a win is always difficult, no matter how weak the current West Coast Eagles look. GWS also recorded their first ever round 1 success, at home against the Western Bulldogs.

Bulldogs are going to struggle

With a team that was tipped as having an outside chance of making the eight this year, Footscray were embarrassed by newcomers the GWS Giants. After a mammoth 82 point loss, the 2016 premiership looks like the distant past now. The Doggies will need to regather quickly against St Kilda to avoid another big loss.

Dark horses emerge

Essendon and Port Adelaide confirmed themselves as the dark horses for the competition this year. Both recorded impressive wins, with the Bombers looking reasonably comfortable against last year’s finalists and minor premiers.

In any other week Port’s 50 point thrashing of the Dockers would be the most remarkable result of the round. Unfortunately for them, GWS had other ideas.

Adelaide disappoint

The Adelaide Crows are aiming to go one better this year, but they haven’t started well. A 12 point loss to Essendon is excusable as a one off result for a premiership contender, but it isn’t the ideal result going into a grand final rematch against Richmond on Thursday. The Crows will need to lift dramatically, and fast.

Cairns game a waste of time

Yes, I understand that the Gold Coast is hosting the Commonwealth Games, starting next week. I also applaud the Suns for taking more games to regional centres.

However. Playing in Cairns, in March (which is the wet season), is madness. What’s even worse is having two of the worst teams in the competition have a round 1 game there. The skills on display, and the final score, were exactly as would be expected in by far the lowest scoring game of the round.

If this match had been in round 22 it could have easily been a playoff to avoid the wooden spoon. Having bad teams play each other in (predictably) bad conditions is no way to grow the game. Even the two men and a dog who turned up wouldn’t be enthusiastic after that display.

Kim Jong-un pledges ‘denuclearisation’ in Beijing visit

China has vindicated reports that Kim Jong-un, the supreme leader of North Korea, has recently made a visit to Beijing. China reports that it earned a pledge from Mr Kim that he would start working towards a denuclearised Korean Peninsula.

China announced that Kim Jong-un and Chinese President Xi Jinping met during an unofficial visit that lasted from Sunday till Wednesday. The trip is the first known excursion of the North Korean leader since he came into power in 2011 and is speculated to be part of a preparation for future talks with the United States and South Korea.

China has historically been a close ally of the secretive North Korean state, but this relationship has been soured by Kim Jong-un’s pursuit of nuclear weapons and the Chinese support of reactionary UN sanctions against him.

According to Chinese news media, Mr Kim said to Mr Xi that he was improving the situation around the Korean Peninsula due to his proposed peace talks with the United States and South Korea. Mr Kim allegedly said that North Korea was “committed to denuclearisation” and that this was a “consistent” stance.

He also allegedly said that this goal could be achieved if the US and South Korea “respond to our efforts with goodwill”. He said that it was necessary to take “progressive and synchronous measures” in order to realise peace in the region.

It was reported that President Xi accepted Mr Kim’s invitation to visit North Korea. He allegedly told Mr Kim that the traditional friendship between them should continue developing.

President Xi said that it was a “strategic choice” and was correct when looking at “history and reality” as well as the “general situation” of Chinese-North Korean ties. He also said this “should not and will not” be different due to “any single event”.

There was a great deal of speculation before this announcement due to a train that looked similar to one used by Kim Jong-un’s father being seen with heavy security in Beijing. A South Korean news agency reported that Mr Kim has travelled from North Korea with his wife.

A senior official in South Korea said that an improvement of Chinese-North Korean ties would be a good sign prior to the start of planned meetings between both Koreas and the US. This recent visit is mirrored by a trip made by Kim Jong-il in 2000 which was also prior to a meeting between both Koreas.

Prince toxicology report uncovers large presence of synthetic opioid

Two years after the premature death of Purple Rain singer Prince, a confidential toxicology report produced from his autopsy reveals an excessively high level of fentanyl in his body at the time of passing.

The American singer-songwriter Prince was only 57 years of age when he was found unconscious on the ground in an elevator at his estate in Paisley Park on the 21st of April back in 2016. Information released to the public six weeks after his passing revealed that his death was due to a fentanyl overdose, a synthetic opiate drug used primarily as a powerful painkiller.

Two years later, experts not originally a part of the Prince investigation have been able to provide more insight as to the level of fentanyl present in his body, with the conclusion that there was no doubt that his death had been due to a fentanyl overdose.

Emergency medicine doctor Lewis Nelson noted that the level of the synthetic opioid in his body was “exceedingly high, even for a chronic pain patient on fentanyl patches.” He went on further to say that the overwhelming presence of the drug in his body was a “smoking gun.”

According to the report, Prince’s blood had concentrations of fentanyl close to 68 micrograms a litre, which the report stated was enough to kill considering that fatalities have occurred in people with concentrations in their blood level ranging from as little as three micrograms to 58 micrograms a litre.

Fentanyl concentration in the Prince’s liver was also apparently 450 micrograms a kilogram, well over the threshold of 69 micrograms which was considered by the experts to be the point past which fatalities would be considered overdose cases. There was also an alleged lethal amount of the opioid in his stomach.

American College of Medical Toxicology president Dr Charles McKay noted that the report suggests an oral administration of the fentanyl hence its presence in the stomach. The drug had time to circulate as evidenced by its presence in Prince’s blood and liver before his passing.

Despite that, experts claim that due to the body’s build-up of tolerance, fentanyl technically has no level at which it is lethal for the human body.

The presence of several pills that tested positive for the opioid in Prince’s home suggests that the singer had built up a tolerance before he overdosed.

While it was unclear where the pills were sourced from, a lead prosecutor stated that he would make a decision on whether or not to find a culprit to charge.

Cambridge Analytica is being accused of violating US election laws

The notoriety of Cambridge Analytica has risen over the past 2 weeks for the role they played in persuading the US public in regards to the presidential election. It is speculated that they used over 50 million Facebook user profiles to advertise pro-Trump propaganda to persuade the US public to vote for the current president.

While Cambridge Analytica have been accused of misusing this data, the UK firm and executives are also being accused of violating the US election laws. Common Cause, which is a government group created to upkeep election integrity, filed legal complaints to the Department of Justice and the Federal Election Commission (FEC) accusing several executives of breaking US election laws. The employees are from both Cambridge Analytica and SCL Group Limited, the parent company.

Alexander Nix (CEO of Cambridge Analytica), Nigel Oakes (Co-Founder of SCL), Alexander Tayler (Data scientist) and Christopher Wylie (former employee, now whistle-blower) have all been accused of the violation of federal election laws that prohibit United States foreigners from altering the process that voters make their decisions of US politically related campaigns.

According to the FEC, the campaign that Trump led paid Cambridge Analytica close to $6 million for their services during the election cycle of 2016. According to government records, Trump wasn’t the only candidate in the presidential race to use individual research and the micro-targeting of voters. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign also used these types of services to aid him in his efforts.

The Common Cause group is requesting that the Justice Department and the FEC investigate any election laws that could have been potentially violated and impose the appropriate restraints and sanctions on those involved.

The complaints that they filed allege the Cambridge Analytica and their executives ignored advice from lawyer Laurence Levy that said foreign firms can still collect and process data but the final analysis must be done by US citizens. The disregard for the advice led management decisions of the US political committee to be conducted by foreigners in the 2014 and 2016 elections which are in violation of the US election laws.

Cambridge Analytica has denied on many occasions that they had any wrongdoing in relation to the Facebook profile data mining scandal. Currently Alexander Nix is in hot water himself from the leaked data that suggested he bribed and entrapped officials to influence election campaigns.

Since then Nix has stepped down and the acting CEO, Alexander Taylor, stated that the firm takes the allegations of the unethical practices very seriously. He also mentions that anyone who is familiar with the staff and procedures of Cambridge Analytica would know that they would not act in act in an unethical way to persuade the political agenda of foreign countries.

Facebook has lost more than $100 billion in less than 2 weeks

Since the word of Facebook’s data selling scandal was released to the public, their stock has dropped dramatically since. The scandal involved Facebook selling more than 50 million users data to the political consultancy agency Cambridge Analytica.

Cambridge Analytica used a quiz app that was on Facebook to collect data about the user’s friends, family, the things they liked and how they could be swayed in a political sense. Employees from Cambridge Analytica have been filmed bragging that they were the reason behind president Trump’s success in the election.

The obvious bad news and publicity has caused Facebook shares to drop drastically. They dropped below $150 USD for the first time since 2017. Since the newspapers had reported the member data leak on March 17th, the market value of Facebook has dropped by more than $100 billion.

From the public backlash and negative publicity, advertisers that use the social media platform have begun to pull out. Commerzbank (Germany’s second largest bank), Mozilla Corp and Pep Boys (auto parts retailer in the US) have all suspended their advertising efforts on the platform since the new has surfaced.

Advertiser trust isn’t the only thing that’s slipping for Facebook. Canada, Germany and the United States have all conducted and published the results from opinion polls that stated the public no longer trusts Facebook even after the social media platform ran ads apologising to the people of Britain and the US.

The poll showed that less than half of Americans trust the platform to adhere to the privacy laws of the US. A survey that was published in Germany’s largest selling paper found that two thirds of the population fear that other social networks and Facebook have a negative effect on democracy.

75 percent of the Facebook user base in Canada stated that they will make dramatic changes to the way they use social media after the data mining leak.

There’s no doubt that this scandal will alter the public’s view on social media platforms. Even though other social media platforms weren’t involved in the scandal, many other platforms such as Twitter noticed a decline in user activity following the scandal. With the dramatic decrease in trust for Facebook will we see the end of social media all together? Or will we simply give it the Myspace experience and jump onto the new rising trend.
