How to motivate your team for better productivity and effectiveness

As you head to work today, are you excited because you know that you are being considered in all your project endeavours and that there is a fun tone to the workplace? If not, then some changes need to take place immediately to improve motivation. Employees are more productive when they are upbeat and when they are having fun.

Remember, fun is not just a word that means joking around or laughing consistently. IT experts have said that they have fun looking for a virus or window washers experience fun when their windows sparkle in the sunlight.

When your company team is not relaxed or having fun, it means that they are slightly stressed which makes business decisions less effective and less creative. Teams are made up of people who have differing opinions and ideas because their skills are what your company needs.

But to improve profit, service, and talent, your team need to work in an environment that empowers and motivates them. These key ingredients are not expensive; all it takes is a willingness to place your employees before your capital.

There are hundreds of tips on how to get your company team to feel more passionate about the aims and goals of your business. One top managerial solution has been shown on the TV news recently and that is about transparency. If you work in an honest leadership role, your actions will trickle down to every team member which helps to make them feel valuable. Give your team more than a quick verbal ‘hey good job buddy, keep it up.’

Employees in a team environment want to know that their ideas are being recognised because they care about their career goals which means helping the company succeed. Inspire your company team with a smile, better interactions, inspirational tasks, rewarding tasks, and more.

After all, motivation means absenteeism is lowered, increased profits, and overall better production. What would inspire your team and help to keep your best employees?

No, not every team member will be motivated by each of your particular solutions, so try different remedies. You can institute incentives like monetary rewards, monthly recognition, even changing the architecture of the office to a more relaxed design.

Let’s look at 5 ideas to help motivate your team/employees:

1. Let’s start inducement with food and drink – I know it works for my family. What about daily pastries to greet employees when they arrive in the morning. Consider keeping fruits in a designated dining area.

This helps promote healthy eating and not only boosts the body’s energy levels but also boosts morale. My favourite motivational food idea is Friday afternoon luncheons or after 5 pm drinks. Feeding the body in this manner helps for a healthier life outlook and restful lifestyle as indicated by these conclusions.

Free food and drinks also help your team to look forward to coming to work! Either way, make it a celebratory free event sponsored by the company.

2. Do you show your team how appreciative you are for their hard work? When the company is celebrated for a special breakthrough, make that news available to your team and make it a workplace celebration. This shows your team how much you appreciate their work efforts in making this event a possibility.

How about celebrating employee baby births, weddings, or birthdays? Don’t just send an e-mail or text, openly show how much top executives and managers care about the lives of your team members.

Make these milestones a party atmosphere with gifts and decorations. It will only take a little time out of your day, but it is a long-term investment. These types of gestures motivate employees to keep their work ethics on an elevated level.

3. Millennials are entering the workforce with particular expectations. Employers must keep an open mind and welcome change, especially if the results are best for the company’s gain. Try creating a balance between work and personal life to increase their motivation.Long working hours and stressful environment can often lead to insomnia.

Treating insomnia with good sleep is what therapists suggest, however, offering flexible options like work-from-home to employee’s comfort can address such stress issues. Companies like Apple and Harpo Productions are incorporating part-time or flexible positions and work-at-home availability.

Labour agencies show that employees not in the office are now ranging between 50% to 60% and yet production has increased. Working from home with modern software and cloud computing does not take away from office productivity.

Happy employees are just as important as a profit increase. Additional incentives for the employees may include free gym memberships, paid vacation, increase training and coaching workshops, etc.

4. A few years ago, there was a workplace movement to take employees out of the office on field trips to sponsor team building motivation. Modern companies are bringing back this type of activity and it seems to be working. More executives are sponsoring activities like the Ninja style games, canoeing, zip-lining, camping, paintball games, and much more.

The goal is not to only have fun, but to get to know and respect each other better, especially when your adrenaline is pumping like a special project that the company is hurried to complete.

Employees can relax in a fun atmosphere that stimulates the mind and body. Employers also get to know their team more intimately possibly in an environment that challenges. Remember, however, embarrassment and fear are not components of team building. Just have fun and learn a lot.

5. Lastly in this list and what is a great reward for keeping key skills in your company is money. Monetary compensation is not just a back-door entrance to keep talented team members – it’s people’s main motivation to work.

Paying people for their experiences and skills is an appreciative gesture, not a negative incentive. Leaders expect monetary increases, promotions, and bonuses. Why shouldn’t a secretary or a mid-level team member expect the same life supporting courtesy?

Remember, motivating your team in a variety of ways is about personal growths and corporate growth. Both need each other!

Channing Tatum announces shock split from wife Jenna Dewan

After almost nine years of marriage, it has been announced that Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna Dewan are splitting.

A now famous Hollywood actor Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, a dancer, met on the set of Step Up in 2006 before marrying in Malibu in 2009.

The couple announced their split across their social media channels earlier today in what was a surprisingly upbeat post. It was a shared post in which they touched on the strange nature of sharing such a personal moment with the world but said “it’s a consequence of the lives we have chosen to lead”.

The long post continued by saying that “we have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple…there are no secrets at the root of our decision…just realising that it is time to take some space”.

The famous couple has one child together, Evelyn who was born in 2013 and they said ion their post that they will continue to be loving and dedicated parents to their child.

In previous interviews, both Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan have heaped praise on the other with Tatum even writing a letter to his wife that was published in Cosmopolitan magazine. The letter was about their relationship and the power they have together with Tatum writing, “Jenna blurted out that she knew what she wanted in life…it was me.”

He continued to say that it was the “radical authenticity” that made him fall in love with her and that she was everything that he had ever wanted in a partner.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that the two appeared to be spending quality family time together with Channing Tatum posting a picture on his Instagram. The image was of him and his wife with face paint on them and the caption “what it looks like when a little tyrant fairy artist holds you down and makes you look better”.

Dewan spoke earlier this year in response to many in the media saying that the couple lives a “perfect life” responding by saying that no one lives a perfect life. She did, however, say that there is such a thing as a great fit as long as you both continue to grow together.

She concluded the interview by saying that “if one starts to grow, the other catches up”. This was reiterated in the couple’s social media announcement regarding their split stating that they are no long grower together but in different directions.

Who is the best Australian Super Rugby team so far?

While the Melbourne Rebels still sit on top of both the Australian Conference and the overall Super Rugby ladder, their loss to the Hurricanes on Friday night exposed some worrying concerns. With a bye coming this weekend, the Waratahs and Reds have the chance to further close the gap.

The Rebels are a team that is dominant when it is on top. In all four of their wins this season they have gained bonus points for winning by at least three tries. They also look like the most complete Australian side, with a strong forward pack aided by a lethal backline. However, when the opposition matches their attacking skill the Melbourne side fall apart.

Against both the Waratahs and Hurricanes the Rebels surrendered decent leads when they were faced with a dominant attack, losing convincingly from a seemingly strong position. They have also not won (or even played) a close game, suggesting that when the match becomes a real contest Melbourne fades away.

The Waratahs are ranked second in the Australian conference, with an extra game still to play compared to the Rebels. They have only lost one game this season, in Argentina, with a draw coming in Durban against the Sharks. NSW are a team that finishes strongly and have proven their ability to grind out close matches.

Their best passage of play for the Super Rugby season so far was a 20 minute period in Sydney where they absolutely demolished the Rebels, scoring almost at will to turn the score from 3-20 to 44-20. The Waratah’s ability to win in the face of adversity is their biggest asset, although a lack of bonus points will hurt them on the ladder.

The Queensland Reds are the biggest surprise of the new Super Rugby competition, using their powerful forward pack to grind out wins against far more fancied teams. They have already caused a few upsets, but probably lack the backline finish to be a true threat to the top teams.

The Brumbies have been disappointing so far. After being the strongest Australian side last year, they have now lost to all of the other three. They badly need to work on both their set piece and backline play if they want to be in the contest against the New Zealand sides.

For mine the Waratahs look like the strongest Australian side, although their lightweight forward pack is an obvious weakness. They seem happy to chase though, and have the attack to take advantage when bigger teams get tired. The Rebels may finish on top of the conference due to their ability to pick up bonus points, but NSW will be more of a threat if they can reach the Super Rugby finals.

2 Australians among 59 officials booted out of Russia

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed reports that two Australians are amongst the 59 officials that were expelled from Russia recently. This development is the most recent in a worsening standoff between the Kremlin and the West regarding the alleged Russian poisoning of a former spy and his daughter in Salisbury, England.

Prime Minister Turnbull revealed that the two Australian diplomats had been given a week to leave the Russian capital.

While he expressed disappointment with the Russian decision, Prime Minister Turnbull said it was “not unexpected”. This move by Russia is undoubtedly part of its political backlash against Australia for sending home two Russian diplomats who Turnbull said were “undeclared intelligence officers”.

Turnbull went on to say that the officials being expelled from Russia were only filling out their “diplomatic and consular functions” and that Russia has “no justification for this action”.

Russia has outlined its actions as responding to what it has called “baseless demands” that ask for Russian diplomats to leave several high profile Western countries. Russia’s ambassador to Australia recently said in a press briefing that the Salisbury scandal was all a conspiracy against Russia being led by Western nations.

In solidarity with the United Kingdom, Australia expelled two Russian diplomats following the Salisbury attack. Russia has already fiercely denied allegations of using the nerve agent in Salisbury which was the first recorded use of a nerve weapon in Europe since the end of World War 2.

A day prior to Australia expelling Russian diplomats, Russia expelled 60 US diplomats and closed the US consulate in St Petersburg. The poison attack has rallied several Western nations against Russia, each of whom is wishing to send Moscow a message regarding respect for state sovereignty.

These nations include the United States, led by President Donald Trump who had recently congratulated Vladimir Putin on his re-election as Russia president. Trump has since defended his kind words to Putin, emphasising the importance of maintaining a good relationship with his Russian counterpart.

Despite confusion about American tolerances, Australia stood firmly with the UK in its condemnation of Russia for what Turnbull called an “outrageous” use of a nerve agent. Turnbull also said that the Kremlin needed to explain how a “military-grade nerve agent” found its way into and was “used in the UK” which posed a significant risk to “hundreds of people”.

Turnbull also said that the government in Russia would need to “explain why its Novichok (the name of the nerve agent)program” was undeclared from the “Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons”.

Russia has outwardly rejected all of these claims and instead said that this is all part of a plot to destroy East-West relationships and further isolate Moscow.

Bachelor in Paradise arrivals cause drama as Megan wants the guys and the girls

The new arrivals on last night’s episode of Bachelor in Paradise certainly put their mark on the competition early.

As always, there was no shortage of drama but the new contestants may have gotten a bit more than they have bargained for.

Episode three of Bachelor in Paradise resumes the morning after the first rose ceremony which saw Davey and Brett go home. But for those who thought that the numbers were quickly diminishing, three new members entered to ensure it remained a full house.

Kiera gets the first date card of the show and without hesitation takes Michael away despite having earlier said he wasn’t “her type”. Of course, Tara doesn’t react well having given Michael a rose the night before and virtually spending all her time with him.

The two go on an interesting date that involves riding horses before settling in for a secluded picnic on the beach. Michael doesn’t hold back saying “She’s absolutely stunning. She’s beautiful…I really hoped she was going to be here.” Except he is saying these things about Tara so I think we know where that’s going.

Back at the Bachelor in Paradise resort, Florence is constantly whining about how Jake isn’t paying her any attention now that he has a rose. The negativity continues for Florence as she complains that she is now just waiting for someone to come in to the Bachelor in Paradise resort and “sweep me off my feet”.

New Arrivals at Bachelor in Paradise

Unfortunately for Florence, the first new arrival is “pot plant Jarrod” as she calls him.

Jarrod says that we are going to see “a whole new person” before continuing by saying that “I’ve grown some stubble” like that is some kind of wild innovation.

Whilst Jarrod makes fun of himself on camera, the rest of the resort members join in a chorus of laughter upon realising he is on the island. It’s clear that Florence has no interest in Jarrod saying that whoever he chooses to use his date card on should “run for cover”.

It doesn’t take long for another Bachelor in Paradise arrival and this time it is Ali from season one of The Bachelor. She clearly still has some reservations about being nicknamed the “stage 5 clinger” during her time on the show spending a good couple of minutes on it in her first time on camera.

It appears that one clinger attracts another with Jarrod immediately in love, “Ali…that’s all we’re really focusing on right now…God’s gift. Wow.”

Jake takes a small liking to her and once again Florence is not impressed, continuing her negativity for the duration of the episode.

The final arrival for the episode is none other than Megan Marx who famously left the show saying that Richie wasn’t the guy for her before entering into a same-sex relationship. Now single she is ready to “hook up with guys and girls in paradise.”

Osher is incredibly impressed by this saying “you have so many options!” as if it’s the first time he has even heard of bisexuals existing.

Megan sits down and must choose a date based on their personality. The stunt is that these personalities are genderless so as to increase the hype around her. Luckily, she picks Jake – cue a negative reaction from Florence – and we find out that Megan is another girl that he has been talking to on the outside.

They talk and chat about their long friendship over dinner before Jake steals a quick kiss as they enter the resort to join the others.

The next episode of Bachelor in Paradise sees Megan enter the resort to a cold reaction whilst Jarrod chooses Ali for his date.

What are the best ways to grow your brand with Instagram?

Instagram is one of the world’s most successful social media platforms, becoming a universally recognised as Facebook and Twitter. These days, it’s more than just a platform to share photos and videos; it’s a hub in internet culture that has a great range of marketing implementations for any business looking to create a visual, creative and engaging online presence.

With over 800 million users, over 25 million active business accounts and over two million advertisers, Instagram is a crowded marketplace at the moment. While building an online presence here can be extremely beneficial, it will also require some hard work and consistency.

As with building any sincere online reputation, the task will need to you research and understand your target audience so that every element of your outward presence is tailored for them. Let’s take a look at some of the top ways to grow your brand with Instagram.

Choose, then stick to an aesthetic

Instagram is very much all about the looks and less about the substance. The user experience of browsing their Instagram feed is usually a series of high quality images with different lighting filters applied to them.

It’s important to take note of the colour scheme of Instagram and its general aesthetics. Instagram tends to focus on lighter, sepia tones that feature a lot of natural lighting.

When considering the overall aesthetics look at what other brands are successful on Instagram, what kind of audience they connect with and what their visual themes are. Even if your brand isn’t terribly art focused, it should generally adopt some kind of artistic profile otherwise it’s wasting its potential on Instagram.

The most important thing is to maintain this aesthetic and only change it in gradual implementations. Think about how your profile looks and what abrupt changes in style or colour could mean.

One major element of Instagram is the filters. As a beginner move, perhaps choose only 2 filters that you will ever use, this will create a concrete visual colour to all of your Instagram marketing.

Reply to comments, engage with fans

Instagram is as socially active as it is visually, with lots of people praising other people’s photos, sharing opinions or even arguing over some controversy. In fact, Instagram users are somewhat more likely to use language add-ons like emoji’s in place of real words.

It’s important to recognise what the Instagram audience behaves like and use this knowledge to inform how you interact with them. Emoji’s, like memes, are a double edged sword in this regard, people love using them but a business can quickly appear insincere or pandering when it tries to force them through its marketing.

Research into how your audience will engage with your Instagram posts is going to take more than a few cursory looks at a comment section. This type of understanding comes from being engrossed in the media itself and that’s why the best marketers on social media will already be habitual users of the platform.

Instagram is seen as more of a closed off and intimate social media experience; at least when compared with Facebook, and thus product engagement here can be particularly potent in the minds of consumers. If you manage to get someone organically viewing, rating and commenting on your brand’s post, you’re on the right track.

Curate your content

Instagram is a powerful social media platform all on its own and shouldn’t be dismissed as a dumping ground for your run-of-the-mill social media posts. Instagram is seen as a more refined experience than Facebook and thus the content is expected to be more artistic and less grounded in value propositions.

For example, the kinds of photos and videos you put on Instagram should follow the same visual style as well as express some thoughts and feelings about the product, rather than its intrinsic value. This makes Instagram the ideal place for those selling artistic products or services as the platform really lends itself to that kind of marketing.

Other businesses may benefit more from building a friendly company profile by sharing behind the scenes content or even inside jokes. Whatever way you choose to take you Instagram account, make sure you focus on consistency in both style and substance.

Don’t be afraid to schedule content

Good social media marketing doesn’t require an intern to be sitting there posting everything in real time, it can actually be done incredibly easily by using third party software. While many people think of Instagram as a place for sporadic, candid posts you can use this expectation to strategically plan when content gets shared so that it is seen as less intrusive by the audience you are targeting.

New Zealand plans to apologise and remove past homosexual criminal convictions

Men who were previously convicted of illegal homosexual offences will be able to remove the offences from their public record and will receive an apology from the New Zealand government. The Parliament of New Zealand has unanimously passed a law that will allow for the expungement. While these men will receive an apology, no compensation will be given out at this point in time.

The application process to remove the convictions can be done by the men themselves, or in circumstances where the man has passed away, family members or representatives can also file the application.

During the course of this legislation, several MPs have made personal speeches regarding the matter at hand. Grant Robertson who is the Finance Minister and also gay made a touching speech that stated that the illegality of homosexuality and arrests of these men ruined lives and destroyed their potential. The views of parliament caused the deaths of hundreds of men and the pain and shame they had to bear was due to society perceiving them as criminals.

He also stated that those that lived through the hate deserve an apology from the countless years of hate and discrimination. Other countries such as some Australian states, Wales and England have taken similar movements to expunge previous illegal homosexual convictions.

The criminal records bill which is known as the; “Expungement of Convictions for Historical Homosexual Offences” was introduced last year by Amy Adams who is the former Justice Minister. The New Zealand Parliament also unanimously supported the apology from the house.

The apology says that the house apologises to those homosexual New Zealanders who were previous convicted for adult activity that was consensual. They also recognise the hurt and suffering that those men and their families have gone through.

How the process will work relies upon the Secretary of Justice to go through each individual application and see whether if the conduct of those involved would result in a similar offence in today’s age. The resulting effect of the process would be as though the conviction had not existed at all. So those who were previously convicted won’t have to disclose it for any reason such as employment prospects.

On the other hand you still may have to declare it in other countries. It comes down to the question asked such as if you have been arrested before, which you would have to answer yes.

While New Zealand has been an advocate for change and equality, when will we see the rest of the world follow suit? There are still over 70 countries in the world where homosexuality is illegal where in 8 of those countries it is punishable by death. This forward movement for equality throughout the world will surely prevail in the future.

Are the referees killing rugby league or saving it?

The main talking point from NRL round four has again been, unfortunately, the referees.  The much publicised refereeing crackdown resulted in a game between title heavyweights the Sharks and Storm which was largely ruined as a spectacle due to the 33 penalties in the match. But is this so surprising?

The NRL made no secret that they have instructed referees to actually enforce the rules this year. This has resulted in an extraordinary rise in the number of penalties given, and even in yellow cards being used. The sight of the referee’s former golden child, Cameron Smith, being sent off for backchat caused every non-Storm fan to smile and think that it’s about time.

The number of penalties being blown isn’t caused by the whistle-blowers in the middle – the cause is teams that continue to cheat. It’s no surprise that Melbourne and Cronulla, both of whom have made reputations for themselves as teams that push the rules, have suffered under the new regimen.

The changes in officiating have been made in order to encourage a more open, free flowing game. Teams that play to this philosophy and don’t try to push the line, such as the Dragons and Warriors, are flourishing. A defensive style of play can still be successful – just ask the Tigers – as long as the defending team is onside.

What we are seeing in the struggle of so many of last year’s top teams is how much their games were based on slowing down the play-the-ball, wrestling on the ground and committing deliberate offences when defending the goal line.

By now every team will know that the crackdown on playing the ball properly, staying onside and allowing the ball player to get up quickly will continue. Todd Greenberg, head of the NRL, has publically backed the referees, and called on them to stick to their guns.

Teams that haven’t yet got the message will start to see more and more sin-binnings. This will only give more of an advantage to teams who want to play an open, ball in hand game. The standard of play will get better from here-on in, and by finals time we should be seeing a fast, free-flowing game.

The change in officiating is designed to remove blights on the game like offside play and wrestling on the ground. Teams like the Storm and Sharks have pushed the line too far, so now the line is being reset. The end result will be a win for rugby league, and will likely shake up the competition considerably.

The key issues in parliament’s corporate tax cut debate

The corporate tax rate and proposals to lessen it are still a topic that is being hotly debated in Federal Parliament. The Coalition has decided that they will make passing their proposal for corporate tax cuts an election issue, which may or may not be a smart move.

The Coalition has the view that big business will be able to use the money that would otherwise be taxed far better than the Government can. They argue that the savings business leaders make from a tax cut will be re-invested into the Australian economy, creating jobs and improving wages.

The Turnbull Government is proposing to reduce the amount of corporate tax from 30% to 25% by 2026-2027. This bill is currently stagnated in the senate where it falls just a few votes shy of what it would need to pass.

For the senators who are voting on this issue, the key questions are whether or not Australia can afford a tax cut and if Australia will remain competitive without a tax cut. With the tax cuts estimated to cost the federal budget $65 billion AUD, there’s concern about the notion that corporates will re-invest the money.

A big problem with any proposed tax cuts is that the Australian federal budget remains in a deficit. The government simply isn’t earning as much as its spending, and this won’t be helped by a huge company tax cut.

While Australia has certainly move close to the goal of a budget surplus, progress has been slow and a big corporate tax cut could unravel this progress. This is also a government that has promised to get the budget into surplus by 2021.

A few small businesses are already benefitting from a tax break. As of the next financial year all businesses that bring in less than $50 million get a tax rate of 27.5% rather than 30%. This policy is designed to assist small and medium-sized businesses in bringing creating more jobs.

If they win the next election, Labor has said it will likely keep this tax cut for small businesses. While the cut is small, it covers a large portion of the economy. While there seems to be bipartisan agreement on small business tax cuts, the battle rages about cuts for the big end of town.

The government Treasury has estimated that a corporate tax cut could generate an extra $20 billion each year for the Australian economy. If this is going to be an election issue then everyday Australian will need to decide which line of reasoning they agree with.

Black-Hat SEO strategies to avoid in 2018

We all want to improve our search engine optimisation (SEO) performance to boost Google rankings right now. In the cut-throat world of business, it is those brands that show initiative that rise up the ladder the fastest and in doing so, collect the major dividends.

Companies are constantly told to update their material and be aggressive in the marketplace to secure their place at the table. Act first and think later has often been a by-product of this desperation.

Yet the conduct of those operations is not just a moral quandary but one of significant relevance in the context of 2018. Search engines are wise to the backdoor techniques that see websites engage in suspicious and callous behaviour for a cynical grab at clicks.

Herein lies the issue of Black-Hat SEO. As opposed to White-Hat practices that attempt to achieve an organic ranking via modes of keyword integration, authoritative backlinks, multimedia use and traffic from genuine social media accounts, black hatters use and abuse these metrics to the nth degree.

Any maneuver that is designed to trick and deceive the search engine essentially is a Black-Hat tool. Some of these have had success over the past decade or so, but the likes of Bing and Google have outlasted their reach to crack down on nefarious operators will ruthless efficiency.

If you have ever felt the need to engage with Black-Hat SEO practices to score some quick traffic points, then consider the following examples as a cautionary tale.

Heading down this path will lead to severe penalties. Don’t say you have not been warned.

Entering the article spin zone

There is an incredibly fine line between boosting a quality article for SEO purposes and simply spinning it for the means of recycling. Termed “article spinning,” this robotic trend has been viewed for what it is – a cheap grab at scoring traffic by regurgitating the same material with only a slight twist to try and avoid detection for plagiarism.

What makes this technique all the more puzzling is that the re-appropriation of article spinning does nothing to help the user experience. It is not designed for them and it is one of the more obvious Black-Hat strategies out there. Rewriting and reposting for the sake of the search engine results page (SERP) exposes the operation to a greater degree than other methods due to the size and scale of the content.

We say there is a fine line because if used properly, there is nothing to suggest that topics cannot be expanded upon and “recycled” in a healthy fashion. Paragraphs from a previous piece can include updated information and when used sparingly, a finite amount of recycling can work when utilised appropriately.

Essentially, the more words and paragraphs that are copied from one source and pasted into another, the greater the risk of violating search engine terms and conditions.

Cookie drops

This might sound delicious but user beware – dropping unsuspecting cookies on the browsers of visitors is no laughing matter in 2018.

internet cookies
Photo: Rawpixel. Pixabay

These small pieces of HTTP files are designed to help the searching experience by tapping into the history of browsers and saving that code for Google to track the user and for future references. A fairly innocent concept on the surface but it has taken Black-Hat operators to ruin the fun for everyone.

The underlying principle behind many of these cookies is to con the search engine by packing their data with links that tell Google they have scored ‘X’ amount of traffic. The individual who has clicked on this link or visited the website is left completely in the dark about this with a series of unrelated cookies sitting on their search history and taking up valuable space on their hard drives.

It is in a similar vein to cloaking to hide the real data behind a link that has nothing to do with that brand or topic.

Exchanging of links

Backlinks are one of the key pillars of SEO performance. They help to judge the credibility and authority of a brand by communicating to the search engine that other peers and respected names in the niche are validating their presence.

seo link exchange for google page results
Photo: Rawpixel. Pixabay

This sounds to be a foolproof method that can’t be abused, right? Well not exactly.

Of course Black-Hat marketers always find a means of bypassing the natural order to access their clicks. One of the ways they abuse this process is to exchange links. Rather than relying on external sources to give your site the tick of approval, they are the architects of both parties to tie these links together under the guise of being separate entities.

Exchanging in this sense is one link scheme that Google does not look favourably towards. Should your underground system be exposed in any fashion, then your domain can be blacklisted and your account shut down with the potential of further penalties imposed.

Purchasing of links

Some marketers might find it hypocritical of search engines to penalise operators who pay good money for their links. In one respect, they are happy to take a financial investment for Google AdWords space, all the while harming sites that take the same practice to backlinking.

However, there are some key points of difference. First and foremost, Google does not provide a service to pay for backlinks. The AdWords they do offer are clearly labeled as paid advertisements for the sake of transparency.

Then there is the need to reward sites that create an organic search engine traffic. If they didn’t provide this environment, they would be invisible against the money makers who can essentially buy their way to the top SEO ranking.

Link purchasing is therefore straight out of the Black-Hat playbook. Since the Penguin update took place, the buyers and sellers of links suffered setbacks on rankings. This is now in the spam basket and it is advised that you avoid this trick at all costs.

Cloaking

Anyone who has attempted to find a live stream of a sporting match or broadcast of an overseas television program will know the pitfalls of cloaking. What was promoted on the surface as a means of viewing an event online would quickly turn into an attempted sale of something else entirely, often packed with nefarious cookies and unsuspecting pop-ups that flooded your screen.

Matt Cutts talks about cloaking. Video: Google Webmasters, YouTube

This is cloaking played out in real time. At its very core, cloaking is deception for both the search engine and the user. Depending on your online experience, it can be possible to identify a cloaker from the outset. If something about an account or message feels unnatural, inconsistent or just off, then the likelihood is that a cloaking is taking place.

The problem that occurs in the current environment to see this process repeat itself is the rewarding of links clicked. The user does not have to remain on the page for an extra second or follow through on a purchase or subscription, they just have to make that click to see the cloaker rewarded financially.

The likes of Yahoo, Bing and Google dedicate a large portion of their Black-Hat SEO combative resources to targeting cloaking activities. Engage in this technique at your own peril.

Keyword stuffing

Repetition, repetition, repetition – this might be the formula for practicing the piano or becoming an athlete, but it is no longer a means of impressing search engines. In much the same as backlinks help to boost SEO, keywords are indicators that crawlers utilise to scan a site for relevance. These are necessary to use efficiently, yet if you overuse, it will place your site in the category of spam.

Keyword stuffing
Photo: Supplied

Keyword stuffing is the lazy option for Black-Hat marketers who simply want to shoehorn their brand name and content into the conversation.

The stuffing can take place with common terms popping up in any of the following locations:

  • Tags
  • Alt-Text
  • Titles
  • Headings
  • Written paragraphs
  • URLs
  • Links
  • Descriptions

As with any technique that is designed to enhance your visibility, there must be a balance struck between the user experience and the need to include and drive keywords. Keywords can not be flooded across your page because it will see a rise in the bounce rate, a decrease in the time spent on your domain and search engines will punish your standing.

It is jut downright spam. Quantity is not part of the equation when we discuss keywords with the quality and relevance of terms and phrases the most vital indicator of a well run operation.

Low-quality content

As mentioned right from the get-go, there is a race to be first and to be relevant in the landscape of 2018. Whatever message can be thrown together and broadcast to the world, it can be considered good enough so long as people see it. Right?

Well the reality is that low-quality content is a card-carrying member of the Black-Hat SEO community. Even if this is not purposely the case, the plugging and promotion of articles, blogs, videos, audio files and guides that are poorly crafted, inconsistent and incoherent will harm your search engine standing.

Visitors don’t respect it. They don’t stay on the domain for long and it is the fastest route to poor ratings and reviews which all come into the equation. WordPress is one such example that incorporates SEO metrics and readability, weighing the ease and quality of reading alongside the need to include keywords, backlinks and on-topic images.

By 2019 there will be further evolutions and developments to this exclusive Black-Hat SEO list. Some clever tactics that Google turns a blind-eye to today might very well be considered spam in the near future, so it is always wise to check and examine the guidelines for healthy SEO practice.

Organic modes of optimisation are not just a means of being accepted by the authorities, but they are the best way to accelerate your SERP standings. The stress and hassle of engaging with Black-Hat techniques is simply not worth it, because the risk significantly outweighs the reward.
