Fears for security as Huawei wins $136m Perth trains telco contract

Huawei, a controversial Chinese organisation, has been given a $136 million telco contract by the Western Australian government raising security concerns.

The company is currently in a joint operation with UGL to construct a 4G communication system for voice and digital services on trains in Perth, including as part of the still-under-construction Forrestfield Airport Link.

Mike Nahan, the WA Opposition leader, said that the deal raised “serious strategic issues”.

Dr Nahan said that the primary security concern was the fact that the project would be integrated alongside data from emergency services in a facility under the operation of Huawei.

Australian intelligence agencies and some in politics have historically demonstrated concern about Huawei technology being used to access infrastructure in Australia.

Some in the intelligence community have said that Huawei is a cyber espionage risk and that is why the company will be barred from contributing to the construction of the 5G network. A decision regarding the banning of certain companies from participating in the 5G network is expected soon.

Dr Nahan went on to say that the contract should have been given to local providers and that he believes Huawei wont the contract simply because they were the cheapest, regardless of security concerns.

Huawei issued a statement reminding Australians that it had provided communications technology safely for our emergency services for “over a decade”.

The company also said that more than 50 WA people would be employed over the course of the contract’s design and building periods.

Mack McGowan, WA Premier, said that he did not foresee any security issues with the deal and accused the Opposition of politicising the issue.  He said that the security advice, from Federal agencies, was presented to the State Opposition so that they had no excuse as to why they were making it an issue now.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull later confirmed that Mr McGowan’s government had sought advice from the Department of Home Affairs.

4 Thai boys rescued following weather delays

A soccer team in Thailand has become trapped in the Luang Cave in Thailand. Reports indicate that the team entered the cave as a rite of passage for the team to mark their names in the cave. Extreme rainfall along with the change in weather forced the team deeper into the cave where they have remained trapped.

On Sunday 4 boys have been rescued from the cave and were taken to the hospital. They are all safe according to former governor, Narongsak Osottanakorn, who led the rescue operation from the beginning.

The families of the boys trapped gave the green light on the rescue operation knowing full and well the possible outcome that could emerge. Helicopters and ambulances waited by the cave to take the survivors to the hospital. The cave is dark, cold and due to rising water levels the team faces being drowned. Trained divers were given the job of transporting oxygen tanks.

A Thai Navy Seal diver passed away trying to transport oxygen to those who were trapped. Petty Officer Saman, 38, lost consciousness on his way back from transporting the oxygen tanks. His diving partner performed CPR on him but was unable to revive his partner.

With extreme weather warnings and heavy rainfall coming in the rescue operation was postponed until the conditions cleared up and no other divers would be put in such a risky situation. However as of now the operation has continued as the weather has cleared up. The trained NAVY seal divers are working in pairs to extract each child to ensure that the procedure is carried out in the safest way possible.

As of right now there are still 8 more boys and their coach awaiting to be rescued.

Unlock your taste buds with basil pesto gnocchi

Growing up in an Italian household I have been infatuated with all things pasta. The stand out dish that is my always go to meal at restaurants would have to be gnocchi. While seen as a delicacy, it can be made at home and with some practice can taste even better. Gnocchi can be served with many different sauces but it is mostly served in Italy with a vegetarian pesto base.

According to Hello Fresh, vegetarianism has a long history as seen with the Hello Fresh timeline. It eventually found its way into Australia during the early naughties. So I thought I’d keep it traditional by making my own vegetarian gnocchi. To start with you will want to start on the gnocchi as it can take some time to cook. Start by peeling 4 potatoes and boiling them to make mashed potato.

While they are boiling you can start on the pesto sauce. A food processor will be your friend here, otherwise a mortar and pestle will also get the job one. Start it of by crushing/processing 2 cups of fresh basil leaves. Add once done add in a quarter cup of pine nuts. Once those two ingredients are processed add in half cup of parmesan, half of olive oil and 2 cloves of garlic. This will be the sauce for your gnocchi so place it to the side until the gnocchi is complete.

By this time the potatoes should have cooked. Drain the excess water and mash them into a separate bowl. You want to add one egg along with flour in increments starting with 1 cup, then half a cup and then half a cup again. Carefully mixing the ingredients together as the potatoes will still be hot. My recommendation would be to use a wooden spoon. Add a handful of parmesan cheese along with some salt and pepper to complete the dough process.

Cut the dough into four pieces and kneed them individually. After a considerable amount roll it into a long snake like shape and use a fork to cut it into smaller cube like pieces. This part will be the most time consuming so it is recommended having some music on to help the time fly past. Once you have cut the smaller pieces off the long “snake” use a fork to groove the gnocchi and give it a better shape. After you have cut and forked every individual piece you want to bring some more water to boil.

Place the gnocchi pieces in the water to make sure that they aren’t touching to avoid overcrowding and the gnocchi from clumping together. You will more than likely have to do more than one set of cooking them. Place the cooked gnocchi on a plate covered with alfoil to keep them warm.

Once all of pieces are cooked, place the gnocchi and the pesto into a serving dish and serve with parmesan cheese and garnish with salt and pepper. Perfecting the method does take time but don’t be afraid to try it out with different sauces and experience the joy of Italian food yourself!

The correlation between proper hydration and overall well-being

Water is the essence of good health and well-being, our true lifeline. Every tissue, cell, and organ in our body requires water in order to work properly. In fact, water accounts for more than half of our weight and without it, we can perish in a matter of days. A key thing to note, however, is that even drinking regularly, but in suboptimal amounts, has a negative impact on our organism. So, it is time to look into your drinking habits and see if there is a need to change your ways.

Body as a water sanctuary

Water has a multitude of critical functions in the body: it carries nutrients to cells, maintains optimal temperature, lubricates the joints, flushes out bacteria, and prevents constipation. The only problem is that we lose water constantly— when we sweat, urinate, and even when we do nothing more than breathe. That means that we have to top up on a regular basis. And if water is not replenished in the body, we become dehydrated.

Dehydration plight

This condition is more than some minor inconvenience. It is linked to a variety of short-term and long-term health problems. The heart area is one of the first to be affected because lack of water in the body causes blood pressure to drop. Moreover, a drop of just 2% of our body water can induce our brain to malfunction and shrink. That is why dehydration is associated with poor concentration, coordination, muscular function, and response times.

What is the sweet spot?

It goes without saying that you need to drink water every day. But, how much is enough? Should you simply drink whenever you feel thirsty? Well, most would agree that 6-8 glasses of water per day do the trick, which is around 1.5 liters. Yet, there are certain factors like age and medical history that come into play and suggest that different people need varying amounts in order to stay hydrated. The older population, for example, does not feel the thirst as much as it did when it was younger.

In the clear

And when you drink it, you want to know you are not taking good with the bad. Namely, it is highly advisable to check your tap water for contaminants. In many countries, water infrastructure is aging and is in dire need of overhauls. To stay on the safe side, though, you can use modern reverse osmosis water filter. This cutting-edge, fully-automated solution is widely used to preserve water quality and remove impurities, including bacteria, arsenic, sulfates, nitrates, pesticides, etc.

Warning signs

When it comes to thirst, it is a very poor indicator. If anything, it occurs when the problem of dehydration is already present. There are some other telltale signs we need to keep an eye on, such as the color of the urine. If it is colorless or light yellow, you are well hydrated. Dark yellow or amber color signal that you are not drinking enough water. Some other red flags are dry mouth, sleepiness, dry tear ducts, dry mouth, fatigue, chronic thirst, headache, dizziness, confusion, etc.

Have it always at hand

Remember that before, during, and after the workout, we need even more water. The same goes for extended periods of time spent in hot weather, as we tend to perspire more then. Therefore, always have a reusable bottle of water with you. It is a default option for hydration throughout the day, although other drinks can help you hydrate as well. Just steer away from those that add excess sugar and extra calories to your diet. Put a slice of lemon or lime if you do not like plain water. Finally, bear in mind that water-rich foods like salads and fruits help achieve proper hydration.

A proactive approach

What and how much you drink play a vital role in your life.  Every part of our body relies on water to operate. That is why insufficient water levels can seriously undermine your health and well-being. Thus, do not wait for symptoms of dehydration to take action. Rest assured that prevention is the best cure there is. Establish a drinking schedule in case you do not have a habit. Stay in tune with the signals your body is sending and take on board a plenty of water. Ward off dehydration and with it, a bunch of health issues.

3 Keyword tools for blogging

Keywords help the search engine determine what your blog is about. If you’re planning to do more about your SEO strategy, stay tuned and learn more about the best keyword tools for blogging.

What is a keyword?

Every time you start searching for something on Google (or Bing, or Yahoo) you enter the term you are looking for and the search engine offers you the most relevant link first. A keyword is a specific word or a phrase that helps search engines determine what the website is about and to rank them for a particular keyword.

Keyword tools and types

If you type ‘bathroom’ in your search engine bar, the first few suggested queries are also keywords for your topic. You are probably going to get something like bathroom tiles, furniture, design, and ideas. These are the terms users were looking for. While Google suggested search can help you with getting a rough idea, there are more sophisticated keyword tools you should use for blogging.

There are few types of keywords you should know about, especially if you’re going to use paid advertising. But for an organic search, you need to pay attention mostly to long tail keywords and LSI keywords.

1 Long tail keywords

Long tail keywords are your best friend if you want to outrank your competitors organically. Long tail keywords are derived from your original keyword. Let’s take the ‘bathroom’ example from earlier.

The word “bathroom” is a keyword by itself.

Long tails are everything between ‘can bathroom tiles be reused’ to ‘bathroom near the central train station’. They are particular phrases that communicate the specific intent, and that’s why they can help you rank better among competitors. You will give your users the specific information they are looking at your blogging content for.

One of the visually nicest tools for long tail keywords is Answer the Public. This free tool gives you a helpful visual chart with questions, prepositions, comparisons, and alphabetical and related search results. This will provide you with an excellent idea of how you should think about keywords. You can download a CSV file and use it to plan the keywords for your next blog. Remember, long tail keywords represent the best how people actually look for things online.

2  Long tail keywords for a specific audience

To get better engagement and more reactions you don’t want to dissipate your effort on the broadly defined audience. When you are looking for long tail keywords with the famous Google Keyword Planner you can select a country, city, language, exclude negative keywords (words that you don’t want to appear in your search), and much more. Google’s Keyword Planner is free, and it’s indispensable source of ideas for long keywords.

You can see the search volume, competition for paid advertising, and search your product service in a specific category or groups of long tails.

3  LSI keywords

LSI stands for Latent Semantic Indexing which refers to a technique of natural language processing. There is a whole bunch of science to it, and if you’re interested in the topic you can start exploring from this Wikipedia article.

In the context of digging keyword gold for blogging you need to think about LSI keywords as related search queries. They originated from other users’ behaviour, and they are usually associated with your main keyword.

You can find them at the bottom page of your Google search. You can also use LSI keyword tools like LSI Graph to find more contextually and semantically related words to branch out your original keyword into semantically related context.

When you enter ‘home decor’ into LSI Graph, you will see that it shows results like ‘discount wall decor’ and ‘home decorators outlet’. These results are indeed related to your keyword, but what can you do with them?

LSIs are synonyms, contextual word pairs, and you will probably include them in your blog piece without even trying. That’s their very nature, they have similar meaning to your main keyword; good writing often includes synonyms, so there is a very good chance many LSIs will find their way into your texts. However, you can always combine few keyword tools and incorporate them into your strategy too.

While there is no strict evidence that Google favours content with LSIs, there is reassurance in knowing that Google wants to promote helpful and informative blogging content with the intent to help the end users find the results they are looking for.

This statement is especially true for mobile marketing. When users turn to their mobiles and search for ‘how to tile a bathroom floor’ they need that information to finish their bathrooms. The query above has both LSI and a long tail.

Some business recorded DIY videos on YouTube in 2015 with these type of keywords. They had 43 million views, and they are still rocking with this strategy. This strategy was successful because it showed an intent to help the user and the understanding how to do it.

While we use keyword tools for SEO, we use our words, blogs, and overall content to help the user find what they are looking for.

We should remember that we are writing for people, not machines and that no matter how much we want to perfect our keyword strategy we should write honestly and naturally. Then, we can use these 3 keyword tools for blogging, to optimise the content and polish it to perfection without taking away its natural vibe and feel; ultimately, it will make it more visible and valuable for both search engines and readers.

Today’s massive AFL line up

Today we have four AFL games lined up, and the results will be very interesting. The Brisbane Lions take on the Carlton Blues at The Gabba this afternoon, with Port Adelaide facing St Kilda (in Adelaide) straight after. Tonight the Western Bulldogs play Hawthorn at Etihad and Melbourne have a game against Fremantle in Darwin.

The Blues and Lions could easily decide the AFL wooden spoon this year, with Brisbane currently on 2 wins from 14 attempts while Carlton have only 1. The playoff between the two worst teams in the league at least has the virtue of looking like a close encounter, unlike when either of them play anybody else. The Lions will take some confidence from their victory in Fremantle last week, and should get over the top of the hapless Blues.

The Power vs the Saints should be a relatively straightforward win to the home team, but this season there is always an upset looming. St Kilda beat the high flying Demons last week to send them back to the pack chasing the finals, so they do have a chance at this.

The Bulldogs are also in form, with a strong victory over Geelong last week (although this is coming too late for their finals hopes). Hawthorn, on the other hand, is another top 8 contender that has recently slipped, losing to GWS last week to fall to 10th place. The Hawks are a better team, but they will be low on confidence while Footscray are on the up. This should be a good game, but the class of the Hawks should see them get over the line.

The Melbourne Demons will be desperate to get back into the winners circle this week against Fremantle, playing in Darwin. The Dockers had a horror game last week to lose at home to the lowly Lions, while the Demons need to avenge the humiliation of a loss to St Kilda. If Melbourne can rediscover their early AFL season form they should romp over Freo, who do not travel well at all.

After 23 years in federal politics, Labor MP Jenny Macklin is retiring

Jenny Macklin, an old guard Labor frontbencher, has announced her retirement after being the longest serving female in the House of Representatives.

Ms Macklin served as deputy to Simon Crean, Kim Beazley and Mark Latham as well as holding the important Community Services, Indigenous Affairs and Families portfolios in both Rudd and Gillard governments.

The member for Jagajaga, Melbourne said in her statement announcing her retirement that it was time for a passing of the torch to a younger generation of politicians.

She said “As the longest serving Labor woman” that it was time for her to “move on”. She went on to mention that she intended to “spend more time at home” with a new grandchild.

She also said it was time “for the next generation” and that although she still wanted to speak on policy matters, it was time for her to “step back”.

During her long career, Ms Macklin strongly advocated for the national apology made by Kevin Rudd to the Stolen Generations of Indigenous children.

She was also one of the key architects behind the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) that was developed by the Gillard Labor government.

Regarding the NDIS, Ms Macklin told Melbourne’s ABC radio that she admitted the NDIS was running into issues but that it would transform over time.

She said that “It’s got a way to go yet” but that it would be “revolutionary” in helping disabled Australians.

Ms Macklin will immediately step down as the Opposition spokesperson for social services and head straight to her backbench seat. She said that she wanted to allow time to ensure the MP who replaces her has time to get the portfolio across.

However, her decision to retire will force another reshuffle in the Labor frontbench, creating a small nuisance for party leader Bill Shorten.

Mr Shorten has roundly praised Ms Macklin, saying that she has “deep policy knowledge” as well as an “unshakeable conviction”.

Predicting 5 key alterations that foldable smartphones will feature

It has been a couple of years since we have been hearing that Samsung will soon launch the world’s first foldable smartphone called Galaxy X. We are halfway through 2018 and we still have no confirmation on when exactly the smartphone will make its debut. While Samsung is busy getting the design perfect, another smartphone company called Huawei is also working on foldable smartphones.

Smartphones have evolved from being basic devices that only could perform basic functions like calling and texting. It’s not just the functions that have changed over time, but the design as well. From basic keypads to flip phones to a touchscreen and now foldable displays, smartphones are rapidly changing. Foldable technology is one of the most awaited features when it comes to upcoming mobile phones. However, ever wondered what changes will foldable displays make the way we use our smartphones? Every new technology brings about a series of change. Here are the 5 major changes that foldable smartphones will make.

Eliminate cracked displays

Currently, smartphones are designed with Corning Gorilla Glass. This glass makes smartphones strong and durable. Nevertheless, the one major and probably the most important change that foldable displays will bring is that – it will reduce the risk of having to deal with foldable displays. If your Smartphone’s display can be folded, then it means that it is pretty flexible. This lessens the risk of a cracked screen in instances when they fall on the floor. All the same, as of now it is still unclear what materials will be used to make foldable displays. We will have wait for a foldable smartphone launch to get a clear idea.

Cameras will become flexible

Camera is one of the main highlights that we give a lot of thought to before buying a new smartphone. We all want a smartphone that has a great rear and selfie camera. But, that’s not that case most of the times. Smartphone companies either focus on either the rear camera or the front camera. That’s why foldable smartphones will make an altering change in this regard. With foldable displays, it becomes possible to use one camera as the rear and selfie camera. This makes it convenient for smartphone companies to focus on one single high-quality camera. One amazing camera to focus on becomes a win-win situation for both the ends.

Flexible usage

In the recent few years, smartphone designs have not had a lot of major design changes. Yes, things do keep getting better. We went from 2GB RAM to 8GB RAM smartphones, 5-megapixel to 24-megapixel camera smartphones, from 2G to 4G VoLTE phones. While these features certainly have enhanced the smartphone experience but is that all we should expect? The face recognition and fingerprint sensor are some of the newest changes that we have witnessed in the smartphone industry.

However, foldable smartphones are going to bring the change that we have been waiting for. A foldable smartphone can turn one display into two, which opens up a whole new world of multitasking. The multitasking feature on Android smartphones allows a user to use two different apps on a single display simultaneously. By folding a phone in half, two apps can be used creating a feeling of having two displays.

Smartphones can get heavier

In the recent years, smartphone companies have been trying to design thin and lightweight smartphones. There is always one smartphone that is thinner or lighter than the rest. However, that will not be the case with foldable smartphones. It is safe to say that, foldable smartphones are only going to get heavier. A foldable smartphone will come with two displays joined together with a hinge. When two displays are placed together, the weight of the smartphone is sure to increase. A foldable smartphone might weigh as much as a tablet instead of a normal smartphone.

Tablets will go out of style

When tablets and iPads were newly introduced in the market, they were all the rage. Everyone wanted a new tablet or iPad. But once the rage died out, the demand for these gadgets fizzled out as well. Smartphones and laptops have advanced so much, that they have eliminated the need for tablets; they can perform almost all the functions that a tablet can.

The debut of foldable smartphones could be the end of tablets. A foldable smartphone will be as big and as heavy as a tablet. Plus, with the added flexibility foldable smartphones become better than a tablet. This might bring about the end of the technology known as tablets.

Conclusion:

Foldable smartphones may still be months away from launching, but these are some of the alterations that these smartphones are sure to make. Don’t hold your breath though – new announcements are being made all the time!

With every new technology there is bound to be some changes. How many more changes these smartphones will make can only be concluded after they make their appearance in the smartphone market.
