5 tips on how to choose a great weight loss program

Each year, millions of consumers spend billions of dollars just on weight loss products and programs, while the rate of obesity continues to rise. With plenty of options available to choose from, how can it possibly be so easy to choose the right diet that will help you lose weight and keep it off for good? To help make it easier, we’ve put together the best 5 tips on how to choose a weight loss program and what to look for:

Check for safety and credibility:

Before you get started on any weight loss program, you will need to have your physician evaluate the status of your health, check for any precautions and give their approval. A top-quality program should have credentials such as registered dietitians, certified fitness professionals, and health coaches.

Realistic claims & outcomes:

Even though programs that say “Lose 10 pounds in 3 days” may sound tempting, the truth is that permanent weight loss works by losing weight at a slow pace of ½ pounds to a maximum of 2 pounds a week. If the program doesn’t state the average amount of weight loss regarding long-term results of participants, consider it a red flag.

Consider its flexibility & reliability:

Weight loss programs that demand or require a strictly limited diet will surely set you up for failure. Consider programs that will meet your needs of physical activity and food preferences. Studies show that to achieve long-term weight loss success, you will need to adopt healthy lifestyle changes without feeling restricted. Steer clear of programs that will require you to buy special pills, supplements, gadgets and foods that promise quick results. While no magic pill can melt your fat away, there are effective weight loss pills that might help speed up weight loss.

Choose ones with sensible nutrition:

Various studies show that people who keep track of their diet, exercise and measures have shown to lose weight more significantly than those who do not. Using a good quality program will promote regular self-monitoring and also eliminate food categories that are harmful or too restrictive. Be sure to keep away from diets that make you eat meals in certain foods of unlimited quantities as these plans don’t work and will ultimately cause you to miss out on important nutrients that your body needs.

How long is the program?

When choosing a program, the best question to ask yourself is “Can I follow through these changes for the rest of my life?” If you decide that the answer is “no” and that you cannot follow through with the given diet program, it is better to keep looking for a practical weight loss program that will fit your daily preferences, needs, and healthy lifestyle.

Types of weight-loss programs

It is also important to understand the difference between the various types of weight-loss programs, which includes commercial programs, clinical programs, and online options.

Weight loss programs such as commercial programs charge a certain fee for meetings as they provide advice for diet and exercise as well as online tools to help keep track of your weight plan. Clinical programs are provided by a dietician that the hospital or a doctor’s office as they offer comprehensive exercise and diet along with supplemental prescription treatments such as low-calorie diets, medication, and surgery.

There are also online programs that are free and available for use on your computer or smartphone device. Many tools offer easy-to-use tracking such as counting calories or charting your weight loss goals.

You can also look into self-help programs, though they make no promises to help you lose weight but offer advice to help you meet your goals. Overeaters Anonymous is a 12-step program that is modelled after Alcoholics Anonymous that helps people who have compulsive eating disorders gain help and explore their underlying emotional issues along with a buddy program for you to call when you feel the urge to overeat.

So what’s the best diet to lose weight? A healthy diet plan that you can stick with for a long time rather than short-term will work best. It should offer healthy and great tasting choices as well as be good for your overall health – including your heart, colon, mentality, and bones. It should banish the bad foods while promoting clean, healthy foods.

Make sure that you understand what comes with the program along with expectations and results. Be sure to follow your research and look to the results of others, especially in their long-term follow-up. Losing weight can be easy with the right techniques.

The evolution of archery sports: things to know

The history of archery sports is directly related to the early development of humankind. A few selected events are outlined in this chapter to help place archery’s historical importance in some perspective for the reader. The bibliography contains some excellent references on the history of archery sports.

Archery skill was of vital importance for the survival of humans for thousands of years. In this respect, archery played a prominent role in the growth and development of individuals, societies, and governments within nations.

The evolution of archery sports

Archery as an invention was as important to early human development as the discovery of the wheel and control of fire.

Learning part of archery

Ancient people learned how to use the bow and arrow effectively out of dire necessity. If today’s archer had to depend upon archery skill for personal safety, food, and animal skins, the motivation to attain great skill with the bow and arrow would be dramatically accelerated!

Primitive artists drew bow hunters on cave walls in many locations throughout the world. Many caves in Spain and southern France, in particular, have excellent examples of cave art with archery themes.

Ancient sculptors carved archer warriors in Egypt and other parts of the Middle East to honor them for their feats. The bow has been used by primitive tribes on all continents as a musical instrument. Many theologians, as an example, believe that David’s biblical harp was also his bow.

A bow can be plucked much like the bass fiddle, harp, and other string and scope instruments. Bows and arrows became a part of the culture, religions, and rituals of various ethnic groups throughout the world in a variety of ways.

Myths of archery sports feats

Archery feats have given rise to many myths throughout history. The mythologic literature of Greece, as one example, includes archery sports exploits by such famed characters as Apollo, Diana, Hercules, and Eros. The romance surrounding Wilhelm Tell and his crossbow skill is a part of both classic literature and music. The English had Robin Hood.

Ancient cultures in the Far East also had their archer heroes in literature written centuries prior to the stories about Robin Hood, Modern novelists and scriptwriters continue to rely upon and embellish these stories. A Robin Hood movie is usually produced about every decade either in Hollywood or England

Integral aspects of archery sport

Archery has been used as an integral aspect of religious ceremonies by numerous religions and sects in the past. The Assyrians concluded a religious ritual by shooting an arrow toward the sun. This same type of liturgy, The Sun Vow, was practiced by various Indian tribes on the southwest plains of America many centuries later.

The assumed mystical connection of the arrow rest with the sun, moon, stars, and planets figured prominently in many ancient religions and cultures, From the standpoint of ancient astronomy, the “archery connection” is seen in the naming of a few constellations.

The Zen Buddhists place great value on archery. The Zen sect does not recognize any dichotomy between “mind” and “body.” The Zen philosophy includes the concept that various exercises of the body (including such things as archery sports and some forms of the martial arts) can bring the practitioner into a state of one complete being.

Use of protective and other equipment of archery

Protective Equipment Archers should always use protective equipment on their fingers and arms. Not only does this eliminate discomfort, but it also permits a smooth and unimpeded release of the arrow.

But in the opening era of archery people didn’t use these tools. But with the days goes and the impact of the sports gone popular, people started to think about its safety as well, especially on the finger and eyes.

For the fingers, archers may want to use either the tab, the glove or the release-aid. Whichever you use, finger protection is essential if the archer is to avoid blisters which will lead to discomfort and a poor release

The tab is a small leather or smooth vinyl device which usually covers the first three fingers with a slot for the nock. Tabs come in a variety of shapes and are sized to fit any finger. Selecting the proper size and style will be a matter of individual choice.

Shooting gloves also come in a variety of styles and sizes. Gloves fit snugly over the first three fingers and offer an adjustable wrist strap for better safety in Archery sports.

Last few words

There are times when Buddhists hold the bow at full draw for many hours until they feel the union of “mind” and “soul.” At that time, Satori is reached. When the archer is no longer conscious of himself or the target, the arrow is released.

Danny Boyle quits James Bond directing gig

British director Danny Boyle, highly regarded for directing films such as Trainspotting, Steve Jobs, 127 Hours and the eight-time Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire, has pulled out of directing the latest Bond film. Boyle’s representatives have declined commenting on the developments.

A statement from the producers of the film confirmed Boyle’s departure from Bond 25, citing creative differences. No further details were provided and there has been no information as to who will replace Boyle or whether the highly-anticipated film will be delayed. Boyle’s decision to leave the project comes just three months after he was confirmed as the director of the new Bond film. Initially, EON productions were reportedly delighted with Boyle’s appointment.

Where to now?

Bond 25 is scheduled for a release date of October 25, 2019 in the U.K. It’s no doubt that Boyle’s departure has caused mass confusion regarding where the film is heading. The original plan was for Boyle to work alongside Trainspotting writer, John Hodge, who was tasked with writing an original screenplay. There has been no word as to whether Hodge remains part of the project.

Whether the studio opts to go ahead with Hodge’s screenplay or a commence writing a new story remains to be seen. Filming was set to begin December 3, which in big-budget movies isn’t a whole lot of time, particularly if you don’t have a director. Naturally, the Bond producers will be trying to recruit a replacement as quickly as possible.

Not a huge surprise

Ironically, fans shouldn’t be too surprised that Boyle has left Bond 25. In 2013, Boyle believed that he probably wasn’t the right type of director to take on a large-scale production, which is standard for a Bond film.

It’s also not the first time a director has left because of “creative differences.” In fact, the recent Solo movie lost directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller because of a similar reason. Ron Howard assumed the role of director mid-production.

Potential replacements

Now that Boyle has left the project, focus has quickly turned to who his eventual replacement will be. Denis Villeneuve, director of “Blade Runner 2049” was thought to be in contention before Boyle got the gig. Christopher Nolan would be a suitable choice, given his public popularity and his success with revitalising the Batman film series.

What is clear, however, is that whoever Boyle’s replacement is will need a vision perfectly in line with the vision of the Bond producers.

Swans face nervous wait on fit Buddy Franklin

The Sydney Swans face a daunting week ahead, sweating on the match fitness of star player, Buddy Franklin. The Swans have revitalised their finals campaign with gutsy wins over Collingwood, Melbourne and the GWS Giants over the last three weeks.

At the end of Round 19, the Swans dropped to ninth on the ladder, out of finals contention. They were struggling to create scoring opportunities and were getting beaten in the midfield. They looked out of gas.

Their recent run of form, however, has been dealt a nervous blow with superstar forward Lance Franklin harbouring a suspected groin injury from their epic win over the Giants at Spotless Stadium on Saturday night. Their late-season comeback has largely been off the back of stellar Franklin performances. Franklin has proven invaluable by booting 13 goals and taking 26 marks over the past three weeks.

Coach John Longmire is giving Lance Franklin until game day to prove he is match ready to take on the Hawks in a blockbuster that will decide who nabs the final spot in the top four. While the Swans are guaranteed a finals berth, they could finish as low as sixth, meaning an away qualifying final could soon be upped to a home elimination final. The Swans will want their star player in the selection mix given their poor home record this season, registering only five home wins.

Franklin was seen limping to the bench with only ninety seconds of match time remaining, appearing to be in discomfort when talking with the Swans’ doctors. The four-time Coleman Medallist has had an injury-plagued season, struggling from a heel injury since Round 1. If Franklin is ruled out, he’ll miss out on nabbing a fifth Coleman Medal.

Nonetheless, the Swans remain confident that Franklin will be match fit, given Franklin’s his gallant efforts in battling injury this season. If he were to be rested, the Swans have found other avenues of scoring throughout the season, with youngsters Will Hayward, Ollie Florent and Ben Ronke consistently finding the scoreboard. In a forward line reshuffle, midfielders Luke Parker and Isaac Heeney could move forward and create further forward targets for the Swans midfield.

Despite the Swans appearing doomed to miss finals, Saturday’s match at the SCG is shaping up to be one of the games of the season and could be a season-defining moment for either team.

Struggling to cook up some ingenious promotion ideas for your restaurant? Eager to “wow” the customers with some exquisite marketing strategies? Excite loyalists with loyalty programs

Reward your esteemed clientele, who frequent your restaurant, with discounts and other freebies. This would result in your loyal customers coming back to your restaurant over and over resulting in adding to your sizable client base. Some examples of rewarding your loyalists could be : one coffee free with on every 5 purchases, cumulative rebate on selected items etc.

Indulge in charities and bring in celebrities

Alluring celebrities in the door could seem extravagant, but redirecting a considerable chunk of the proceeds to a social cause and letting the celebrities know about your goodwill, would not only entice them in for a lessened charge but also help you popularize your business and increase your customer base.

Partner up with foodie apps

With online-driven customers in today’s day and age looking for instant gratification and user-friendly ways for ordering food, booking reservations online and earning loyalty points etc. its only prudent to tie up with food delivery and reservation apps. Even the loyalty programs could be incorporated into these apps to compile and analyze customer behavior data.

Promoting your restaurant business alongside popular holidays and big events, is a fun way to promote and achieve a roaring business. These events are marked with a heavy footfall of ardent patrons reveling in the holiday spirit, who tend to popularize your business by sharing positive reviews and tagging you in their posts on social networking pages.

Get people in the doors in the down time

The most authentic and tested approach to adequately leverage your under-utilized staff and other utilities that get squandered during off-hours, is to get your patrons in the doors during down-times. Some examples include, giving away discounts on weekday nights like Tuesday or Wednesday nights, or handing out offers and freebies between 2 pm to 5 pm.

The above out-of-the box marketing strategies, will help you delight your customers and eventually win over fresh ones, staying way ahead of the curve in the restaurant industry.

A crop corner – a starter’s guide to growing vegetables

Starting a vegetable garden doesn’t need to be daunting. It is simple when you follow the steps. First, for all you need to think about what types of vegetables you and your family eat. It’s best to plant ones that you eat regularly to make sure the time and effort you invest in your vegetable garden is worth it, so that you quite rightly enjoy the ‘fruits of your labour’.

Once you have decided on the fruits or vegetables you want to plant, the next step is to divide this list into seasons. This will tell you what fruit and vegetables to plant and when. Then you’re flying, next you’ll be designing an irrigation system and checking the ph of your soil remotely… Well, maybe not quite yet. But that’s not to say you’re not already a gardener. The biggest mistake people make is underestimating the power of seasonal growing and you are already one step ahead of them.

#1 Positioning your garden beds

If you haven’t already positioned your garden bed already there are some quick tips for best position. If you have a mix of plants which like shade and sun, aim to position your garden bed in a place that meets both these needs.

If however, you are only growing vegetables which grow best in full sun, aim to position your garden bed to give them the best start in life.

#2 Providing ventilation

Another good tip is to make sure your garden bed has great ventilation and that any moisture or water is draining correctly. If you are redesigning your whole garden, a handy tool is this garden planner, it can help you to position your garden beds and other additions, such as garden furniture in the best possible position for you.

#3 Plant spacing

plant space

Another common mistake new gardeners make is planting too much too soon. Aim to plant one garden bed at a time, this will allow you to fix any issues in terms of soil depth, ph or draining problems without wasting all your seedlings in one go.

Take it from me, reading the seedling planting guide is important too. I thought the spacing recommendations were over cautious, however I honestly do suggest keeping to the plant spacing.

The reason plant spacing is noteworthy is because it prevents overcrowding. In an overcrowded garden bed it means that plants are competing for soil nutrients and light, and when either of those are scarce your plants will suffer.

Therefore, by sticking to the plant spacing guidelines, you will produce better quality plants and ultimately better tasting crops.

#4 Water regularly

Also, remember to water you plants regularly, as a new gardener you won’t be used to do this yet and will have to create a watering habit. One way to do this is to set daily reminders on your phone or in your calendar to prompt you. Try to water the garden when it is not peak sun, like early in the morning or late at night.

If you’re anything like me, remembering to water is a struggle. Therefore, we’ve invested in an irrigation system. This system works for us as it is timed, automated and easy to change the times and dates during different sessions. The ultimate system to set up is one that works with and for you.

#5 Watch your vegetables grow

These few key tips for gardening will help you to get started. Once you’ve completed these things, you’ll want to look at pest and insect control to make sure your vegetables aren’t eaten by sneaky critters.

Make sure anything you use to prevent insects doesn’t have a knock on effect or unexpected consequences to the health of your vegetables and therefore you. Harvesting is also another area which will be important have knowledge in for when your plants and vegetables reach that point. When you’re getting ready for the harvesting session read this handy harvesting guide.

Pope Francis condemns church sexual abuse in public letter

Pope Francis has sent out a public letter addressing Catholics worldwide that condemns the sexual abuse committed by priests and demands accountability.

The three-page letter, issued by the Vatican on Monday is in response to new information revealing decades of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the United States.

In the letter, Pope Francis begs the victims for their forgiveness and said that all Catholics must work together to root out and expose sexual abuse.

He then took aim at the self-referential culture within the church that is seen as a major culprit in the scandal, saying that priests had been more worried about their own reputation than protecting children.

He said that “with shame and repentance” the church acknowledged that “we were not where we should have been” and that “we did not act in a timely manner” in responding to “the magnitude and the gravity” of the suffering caused.

He went on to say that the church “showed no care for the little ones”.

The letter was circulated just ahead of Pope Francis’ Ireland trip, an awkward visit considering Ireland is one of the nations that was rife with Catholic sex abuse. The issue was expected to be topical during the Ireland trip, but recent revelations in the US have brought the issue even more to the forefront.

The letter, which was sent out in seven different languages and addressed the “People of God”, referenced the recent American findings and vowed that such crimes would “never again” occur.

He also said that “no effort must be spared” in creating a culture that can “prevent such situations from happening” and also to prevent their cover up and perpetuation.

However, the Pope didn’t indicate that there were any plans to punish or prosecute members of the clergy that covered up for paedophile priests.

Facility housekeeping essentials for a food processing startup

Clean processing facilitates are the essential condition for food safety. It’s much less likely that food safety will be compromised if the facility and equipment that finalize every product run is spotless. Occupational health and safety administrations provide general guidelines on how to keep these environments clean, but it’s on trained plant employees, especially operators outside the sanitation department, to follow those guidelines without exception. Here are the most important aspects of keeping your food processing plant spotless and safe.

4 reasons why engraved plaques make the perfect employee award

If you’re running a business, then you no doubt understand that your employees are one of your most important assets and motivating them is a big ongoing responsibility. Celebrating and rewarding your employee’s achievements and milestones is one of the easiest and most effective ways to encourage them to perform at their best.

One of the most popular means of rewarding and celebrating workplace achievements is with engraved plaques. They are a powerful way to tie an employee closer to the organisation in a way that they will feel truly appreciative of far into the future.

Let’s take a look at the 4 reasons engraved plaques make the ideal corporate award.

1: They’re personalised

The best and most obvious benefit of custom engraved plaques is that they are a blank canvas on which you can express and kind of sentiment you want. Apart from including the name of the person it’s being awarded to, there’s room for you to add something extra like a company motto or favourite quote.

Engraved plaques give you an insane amount of creative freedom when it comes to characters, fonts, images and design patterns. You can even choose between a wide variety of different frames so that you can find something that perfectly suits your companies’ aesthetic.

When you are giving someone an award, the last thing you want is to provide them with something generic and forgettable. You should always strive to give them something that feels unique to them and to your organisation.

2: They engender employee loyalty

Another obvious but important benefit of engraved plaques is that they work to tie employees closer to the company is a very direct way. By expressing gratitude towards an employee via a custom-made award, you are showing them how important they are to the business and that they’re efforts are being sincerely appreciated.

Time and time again, research has demonstrated that employees who feel positive about their impact in the company will have a better work ethic and ultimately produce better work. For example, if you awarded a salesperson an engraved plaque that commemorated their first 100 sales, then they will be even more motivated to reach 200 sales.

Obviously, this all works to promote loyalty in employees as they begin to form a personal connection with the company. Employees with an engraved plaque that celebrates their accomplishments will see themselves as not just another number, but as a valuable individual whose efforts are recognised and appreciated.

The value of this kind of employee loyalty cannot be overstated, as the long-term benefits ultimately open up new money making opportunities for your business.

3: They are extremely durable

A high quality engraved plaque will last an incredibly long amount of time and will look as good as new with only minimal upkeep. Depending on the material of frame you invest in, the award will be able to last through the usual knocks and bumps it may endure while on display.

Even when they do start to show signs of age, most people simply think it adds character and authenticity to their award.

4: They improve your businesses’ public image

If your employees are proudly displaying their engraved plaques on their office walls or on their desks or even sharing photos of them online, they are improving the public perception of your business. This is because consumers look favourably on businesses that take care of their employees and ‘look out for the little guy’.

Commissioning personalised awards for your employees shows the public that you’re about ‘more than just making money’ and that you sincerely care about the professional development of those working under you.

They also make your business look more authentic and authoritative as they will suggest a high level on internal quality control. Basically, they will show the public that your business is highly concerned with the performance and contentment of their employees.

Obviously, a business with this kind of positive public perception is going to get more eyeballs and thus more feet through the door.

When it comes to giving your employees an award that they’ll truly appreciate and has positive impact for your business, it’s hard to go past the simple and effective appeal of engraved plaques. They are relatively inexpensive and can be quite affordable when ordered in bulk, so it may be prudent to come up with a uniform template that you can mass produce at a cheaper rate.

Possums in Australia. Why are they a pest?

Read about possums in Australia, how they have encroached on the urban environment, how possum population numbers grew to the point that they became a pest and how you can prevent possums becoming a pest at your home.

If you live in Australia then you already know that there are plenty of possums in the environment.  There are 23 known species of possum and they have successfully taken over much of the natural forests and are being seen more often.  Possums are a member of the marsupial family.  So why are possums considered to be a pest?

Urban takeover

While these critters are generally seen in forested areas, they are beginning to take up residence in human neighbourhoods.  Possums are territorial and will excrete body oils and urinate to mark territory.  Although they are not overly aggressive, they will attack if they feel that they are trapped in order to defend themselves.

As possums move into urban neighbourhoods they raid human gardens which are very easy pickings.  They are mostly herbivores but they also will eat bird eggs, grubs and insects.  Since they are largely nocturnal, they forage for their food from dusk until dawn.

With their new adaption to urban living, possums have started moving into garages, sheds, chimneys, roofs and attics. Although possums are a solitary animal, they do seek each other out during breeding periods and this can be as soon as one year of age for some species.

Noise

Possums communicate with one another through many different methods including screeches, hisses, clicks, coughs, chatters and grunts.

Destruction and smell

Possums tend to destroy homes when they move into them.  The odour from their droppings and urine can be overwhelming and the amount of damage can be outrageous.  Many homeowners are very upset because of the damage to their property.  Possums can also chew electrical wiring which can cause expensive damage in a short amount of time.  If you notice that there are possums around your home, you should take steps quickly to get rid of them before they become a serious problem.

Possums have been known to single-handedly destroy both decorative and food-producing gardens.  As herbivores, possums will eat ferns, flowers, fruit, leaves, eucalyptus, snails, moths and even baby birds.  The love new plant growth and tend to be attracted to backyard gardens where they will eat everything growing including mangoes, carrots, melons, roses, camellias, wattle and wisteria.  They also love grapes, apples, bananas, cucumbers, broccoli, tomatoes, lettuce and corn.

Possums tend to mark their territory by spraying their urine around and this has a heavy and pungent odour.  The smell can be quite strong and distasteful to humans and most people would rather not have to deal with it.  Scent glands on possums also give off a nasty aroma that can be repulsive to humans.  If you are wondering if you have possums living in your property you will soon know by the strong aroma that will be very noticeable in short order.

 No population control

Although there is a small amount of natural population control of possums through bush fires, lack of vegetation and dingoes can eliminate these creatures.  The fact is that these animals have flourished in their environment, both natural and adapted.  Possums were introduced to New Zealand to create a fur trade and resulted in a population explosion that continues to grow, unchecked.

Disease threat

Possums do not carry deadly diseases, but they do carry parasites, ticks, mites and some bacterial infections which can be transmitted to other animals and even to humans.  The scat of possums may carry what is known as buruli bacteria which causes large skin ulcers in humans.  If a person does come into contact with possum scat in error, they should remove it from the area and then wash their hands thoroughly.

What can you do?

If you have a possum problem you can call a professional pest control company, but that is going to cost you quite a bit of money.  The better option is to tackle the problem yourself.  What are the steps necessary to eliminate these pesky critters?  You should know that possums are a protected species in Australia, so you cannot kill them.  Once thing that you can do is attract them with bait into live traps and remove them to a different location.   The main problem with this method is that you need a permit to move possums.  You can, however, take certain steps to get rid of possums or discourage them from taking up residence in your home in the first place.

First, eliminate all food sources.  This may even mean removing decorative plants that flower and your vegetable garden, but you have to decide what is more important to you – getting rid of the possums or having plants. Possums will also eat pet food, so if you have been feeding your pets outside, bring the food and dishes indoors and only feed your pets outside during the day when possums are sleeping.

Bird feeders tend to leave plenty of seed that is attractive to possums.  Clean up the feed that drops from the feeder by sweeping it up before each night.  If you have store compost in a pile outdoors, use only sealed bins designed for composting.  If you have fruit trees, try to pick all of the ripe fruit quickly and remove any that falls on the ground.

Block access to any areas where possums have been known to frequent.  When you eliminate all access points it will discourage creatures from taking up residence.  Trim nearby trees and bushes so that they do not contact your home.  Remove clutter from around your home including unused garden pots, bags and containers which could make great nesting areas.  Make sure that your barbecue cover does not create a tent that is a perfect hiding spot.  Your deck area should be enclosed and complete with plastic screens or some type of netting or mesh that will keep critters out.

Add Items that will deter pests

Motion activated lights make life uncomfortable for possums because they don’t like bright lights.  Loud music playing next to areas where possums are known to nest can also drive them away.  Some other known deterrents are mothballs and garlic spray.  You can also attach spikes to surfaces around your home that will deter pests.  If you prevent possums from moving in it is better than trying to get rid of possums once they are established.
