What Dan Holzmann can teach us about successful management

Dan Holzmann is the CEO and President of the Juice Plus+ company, a highly successful, multi-national health and wellness brand that has a presence in over 25 countries. The success of Juice Plus+ speaks for itself, but how has the CEO achieved this success as a leader?

Juice Plus+ was established more than 50 years ago, starting as a small, direct sales company that expanded into the health and wellness sector in 1993. When the brand entered the European sector, Dan Holzmann jumped on board and worked his way into the CEO position he maintains today.

His employees will tell you that he is a very hands-on CEO who really treats everyone, at every level, like his own family. He has had several pitfalls and setbacks throughout his career and instead of trying to bury them, is open and honest about how others can learn from his mistakes.

This level of humility and fatherly management of his company is what sets Dan Holzmann apart and keeps his employees motivated. In this article, we’ll look a little closer at some of the core principles that this dynamic leader holds dear and that have driven his success up to this point.

A passion for making a positive difference in people’s lives

The main driving factor behind his great success is undoubtedly his sincere passion for improving people’s lives, whether that is his employees or his customers. He not only uses his business as a means of enriching the health and lifestyle of customers but also as a means of providing a business opportunity for his employees.

Because he knows that teamwork is absolutely essential to the success of any enterprise, he chooses to engender a sense of family throughout his business. Above all, this approach creates a trusting environment where even in high-level corporate settings, people are supported and mistakes are learnt from rather than punished.

Dan Holzmann never gave up on his company and understood that sticking to a good idea, even if it struggles in the beginning, will always eventually pay off. He was confident in his product and his employees and remains so to this day.

His passion for his brand’s mission and his confidence in the ability of his employees to accomplish that mission is what has enabled his company to succeed where others fail. It’s not just about saying he can do something, for Dan Holzmann, it’s about actually taking active steps to achieve the goals that are talked about.

A unique management style that focuses on enabling leadership in others

Dan Holzmann’s approach to business management acknowledges that a key leader is essential but that it doesn’t mean others can’t have opportunities to lead in their own contexts. The marketing approach of Juice Plus+ allows partners to become leaders of their own teams and inspire people under them with their own approaches.

As a leader, Dan Holzmann really puts the power in the hands of employees while guiding them with authority where necessary. His approach isn’t about pretending there’s no hierarchy, it’s about giving everyone the flexibility to succeed and make decisions within their own arenas.

Discipline in his craft

Dan Holzmann understands that underlying everything, you need to show a level of discipline to succeed in business and life in general. This means adhering to a personal code, even when it’s inconvenient.

Having faced a lot of adversity over his long career, he knows that if you take shortcuts and don’t apply yourself, there won’t be any reason for people to trust you. This discipline in his craft has allowed him to succeed where others may have given up.

How these simple principles can be applied to business and life in general

While these traits have been beneficial for Dan Holzmann and his global business, they aren’t exclusive to him and can be adopted by anyone with the willpower to do so. Adopting any new mindset is going to be difficult in the beginning, but if you stick to your guns these traits will become second-nature very quickly.

Above all, what we can learn from Dan Holzmann is that a sincere commitment to a set of guiding principles is essential to achieve success in a competitive industry and to inspire others to support your ambition. Without a passion for what you do and without the ability to acknowledge as well as learn from your mistakes, it will be very difficult for you to overcome setbacks and achieve the success you desire.

Wilson Lau discusses the founding of multinational design and prints company JoinPrint.com

Wilson Lau is one of the co-founders of JoinPrint, a printing company operating out of Hong Kong that serves clients around the world. The company offers both design and printing services, primarily to corporate clients.

In addition to large scale printing for businesses JoinPrint offers other services for individuals, such as wedding invitation design and printing. Wilson started the company from scratch.

Wilson, how did you get the idea to found JoinPrint?

After finishing my Law degree at King’s College London I decided to start a new adventure in Hong Kong. At University, I was involved in a lot of event organising – in this capacity I was connected to a lot of UK based printers.

When I wanted high quality, customised printed products I used the local London based printing companies, but when I wanted standardised, un-customised, cheaper products I used companies like VistaPrint who are known for doing bargain products.

After a time, it became apparent that it was tricky to find that balance where I could get high quality products at affordable prices. So when I moved back to Hong Kong I wanted to fill this gap and replicate the quality and bespoke service of the local London printers but at good prices.

Do you have a background in the printing industry?

Yes, having worked with different printers in the UK allowed it me to develop an understanding and knowledge of the industry. As a former customer myself, during the production selection and the R&D process, I gained empathy with important things like paper selection, printing methods, and finishing options.

This is why during the R&D for our products we put extra focus on these things. With a semi-customisable production method, we’re able to provide high quality printed products, especially business cards at an affordable price.

Most of our customers love the quality of our business cards and it is very important to have high quality business cards as they are a representation of you as an individual, as well as your business.

Is this the first company you have founded or co-founded?

Yes. I am confident that it will continue to grow so long as we keep working hard and trying to offer the best possible service and products for our customers.

How many countries does JoinPrint operate in? And which one are you based in?

JoinPrint currently prints to customers all over the world but mainly; Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, UK and the USA. We are currently setting up a new factory in Australia and are planning a factory for the US too. The will help improve the turnover time of our products in these locations.

What were some of the challenges you faced in setting up your printing business?

As we own our own manufacturing site, we had to deal with a very tough financial situation whilst we tried to build our customer base. We had to invest money and resources into marketing to boost sales as quickly as possible.

Secondly, when orders started to increase rapidly our production site was not ready to fill the big demand. This caused delays to delivery whilst the company suffered through these growing pains. I treat this as a valuable learning experience.

Without these problems, I wouldn’t have designed the internal logistics program and developed the automated production processes that we have now. We are now printing over 50,000 business cards per day, and are only able to do this due to the lessons learned from these challenges.

Do you use any special software or technology in your design and printing?

We’re using the latest HP indigo machines. The printing quality is one of the best in the industry. With this, we also have an online business card design engine, which allows users with no designing experience to create spectacular designs that represent themselves.

Do you help people to design their cards, invitations and flyers as well as print them?

We encourage people to use our design engine or templates, but if they need additional help we offer a service in which our in-house designers will design products that suit the customers’ requests and personal objectives.

Marko Stout reflects on his career and style

If you follow modern art, in particular the New York scene, you will probably have heard of Marko Stout. He is a New York based artist with a huge fan base that includes celebrity collectors such as the Kardashians, and his exhibitions are very different to your traditional art shows – think DJ’s and plastic cups rather than wine and cheese.

Marko is a prolific artist who works with many different kinds of media, and his art is often compared to Andy Warhol at his best.

Marko shares more secrets about his background and his unique, New York inspired style.

Marko, can you explain how you got involved in the art world?

It’s a long but interesting story that ends with me living on a houseboat outside San Francisco, hanging out drinking wine and smoking weed with a friend who owned an art gallery in the area – he actually was a roadie for the Grateful Dead in the 70s.

Anyway, he got me into painting and even sold some of my works in his gallery. So that really got me interested in art professionally, as a career. A few more wild twists in life found me living in New York City and that’s when things really started to happen for me!

Did you ever receive any formal art training?

My degrees are in biology and medicine. I studied biology at Princeton – art never seemed like a practical career, but I have a natural ability to draw and paint and create on my own terms.

Art school would not benefit me at all, it’s a place where students go to learn to paint like the old “masters” and that’s so not me! I wanted to create something new; like to do my own thing and let it be judged on its own merit, not some academic construct.

Your work can seem to deny categorisation – how would you describe your artistic style?

I really don’t like classifications, it seems way too limiting. I saw on Wikipedia that they called my style “industrial pop”. I’m not sure what that is, but I kind of like that term.

As far as my work is evolving over the years, I find it becoming a bit more minimalist in style. I can say much more and get directly to the point with more intensity.

Your style of art has often been compared to Andy Warhol – would you say his works have influenced your style?

Andy Warhol is really the father of modern art as we know it today. He is the first real American artist with a style totally different than the old traditional European painters – way cooler and more democratic… more American! I just saw the new Warhol exhibition at the Whitney Museum here in New York, and it was really amazing to see a retrospective of his work presented like this.

Unlike most artists of the 20th century, or history for that matter, Warhol worked in great depth in many different forms of media – I think as far as subject matter goes, I was especially influenced by his film work and his use of colour for impact in prints certainly influences my work as well.

Is there a reason so many of your works are inspired by New York, given you started painting in San Francisco?

Yes. I moved to New York.

The vibe is really quite different in NYC, its where all the action is. It’s much tougher to make it in New York, but I like the challenge and the excitement of living on the edge in the canter of it all. I’m really immersed in the subjects of my work and the vibrant art scenes of Chelsea and downtown New York.

A number of high profile celebrities are fans of your work. Have any of them influenced the art you create?

No. My work is more influenced by environment and the models I work with. I’m personally not at all interested in celebrities, I find more interesting people here on the streets and clubs in New York. But, as it happens I have a lot of celebrity fans and buyers – maybe that’s because my work tends to be a bit pricy for the average collector and the rich celebrities are the one that can afford to buy my art.

I had very nice endorsements from the Kardashians and some RuPaul Drag Race stars; I think this may have gotten the whole celebrity collector thing happening for me.  I know Carson Kressley from the “Queer eye for Straight Guy” show and Madison Hildebrand from Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listings LE” had nice thing to say about my last exhibition, and even Snooki made a fun video for us.

You have had exhibitions in Europe before – do you have any more international trips planned, or do you think you’ll stick the US and New York for a while?

We had a couple of very big, successful shows here in New York this year – Gallery MC in summer and in the fall a really big show at Caelum Gallery in Chelsea. The crowds were huge for both exhibitions and we sold most of the works- so I’m very excited to be working with the New York galleries!

We sold some of my sculptures to a Berlin night club and are planning an exhibition there next fall some time, still working out the details with the gallery – I don’t really want to go to Germany in the winter… way too cold!

How can you make money from becoming an Amazon affiliate?

The Amazon affiliate system (also known as Associates) represents an easy way to make money off your website. The program essentially works on the principle that if you refer a customer, the company will pay you a part of the selling fee. This is tracked through links on your website that send your readers to the pages of specific products.

The system is a win for the retailer, of course, because it means that they don’t need as big an advertising budget, and also a win for the blogger who can make money out of links that they may well have posted anyway. There are some pitfalls, however, and being an Amazon affiliate should not be the only purpose of your website.

Becoming an Amazon affiliate

If you want to get involved your first step should be to look at the Udemy course on Amazon affiliate marketing. This is a great way to learn how to set yourself up, as well as optimise your website to be able to attract a lot of potential customers to refer. SEO is the best way to do this for free, however any method that attracts people to your website will help.

You should also ensure that you aren’t competing with too many other members of the associate system. Remember, even if you don’t sell products directly you are still competing with online retailers, and there are only a few spots on the first page of Google. You also need to create value for your page visitors, so the links need to be relevant and there has to be a reason for people to come to your website.

Often people who decide to become an Amazon affiliate use product reviews as a good way to create relevant links and convince people to buy the products they are being directed to. If you do this there is often a temptation to just rewrite reviews that you have found elsewhere, but this is an error.

You need to create original content to give value to your readers, meaning you either need to use the product yourself or ask someone you know about it. If you simply copy other people’s content you will not attract visitors – and you may well be hit by penalties from Google or Amazon.

Picking what to send people to

You should think carefully about what products you want to refer people to as well. If you already have a website that you want to start monetising then you need to pick products that fit with the general theme of your posts. If you are setting up a new page purely to be an Amazon affiliate then you need to pick your niche carefully, and make sure you will realistically be able to rank.

You should look at the commissions available in different categories as well; as there are differences in the amount of money you can get for different links. Take note, however: the rates can change without notice. The highest commission products are also likely to have the most competition from other Amazon affiliate websites.

You also need to consider how much money you can make from each sale that goes through your referrals. More expensive items will lead to higher commissions, however it is also harder to sell these items to people – your readers are a lot less likely to impulse buy a mattress than a pillow, for example!

Is this a viable business model?

Working on computer

Unless you’re really good at it, basing your entire website around being an Amazon affiliate won’t be sustainable. You are likely to fall into the trap of focussing on selling, rather than providing content, which will reduce your search rankings and make your site less valuable to your viewers – ironically leading to a drop in referrals.

You also run the risk of an algorithm change by Google or Amazon crippling your business overnight. If you are resorting to black hat SEO to try and attract more traffic to refer then you will eventually be penalised by Google. There are also a huge number of rules to follow as an associate, and if you break any of them you can be removed from the platform.

However, becoming an Amazon affiliate is a great way to generate a bit of extra income from a website. If you already have a reasonable audience then simply putting a relevant link into your blog posts is unlikely to cost you in terms of turning people off your website, and it is very little extra effort to potentially make a decent amount of money.

Which workout plan will best suit you?

If you want to get fit you are probably looking at a number of different gyms and programs. Your options range from just doing your own running to signing up to fitness classes. In reality it is very difficult for a beginner to come up with their own workout routine (and stick to it), especially if you are also trying to improve your diet at the same time.

For those who are interested in more hard core workouts with trainers to show you what to do then personal training sessions at a gym can be a good idea – but these are also expensive. If you want the same benefits of having someone else push you to your limits you can join a fitness class, whether one run by a local trainer or a chain such as CrossFit or F45.

People who are confident that they can stick to a workout routine on their own, as long they are provided a suitable one, have a number of cheaper options. There are a lot of quality programs out there designed to be done at home or at the local park, and they can target strength, fitness or both. One of the leaders in fitness is Method Makia which focuses on improving strength and burning fat through body weight exercises.

Method Makia

If you’re looking to focus more on functional strength and building muscles, Method Makia (mentioned above) is a great bet. The founder, Alex Maki, discovered that body weight training was as good (and sometimes better) better than using heavy weights for strength, with a much lower risk of injury.

This method actually features a number of different programs, all of which work your whole body but also target specific areas to focus on. For example, the push-up program will include things like squats and sit ups, but the primary focus will be on chest exercises.

You will be able to change up the exercises every few weeks to focus on growing muscles in different areas of your body. After doing a month of push up work focusing on your chest, for example, you might swap to the chin up and rowing program to try and work on your back and get that classic V shape.

Workout classes

Almost every gym will have its own class schedule, and will let you pick which ones you are interested in. Generally the options will be for cardio or strength building sessions. You can also sign up to personal training sessions run by local trainers, which will mostly involve running and other fitness activities at the local park, or beach if there is one available.

Of course there are two major fitness trends currently sweeping across Australia in CrossFit and F45. Both of these involve working out in classes, with a blend of cardio and resistance activities. They can be pricey, however, and intimidating for beginners.

The difference between the two is that CrossFit is more focused on heavy weights, while F45 focuses on repeated sets. If you don’t have much experience in weightlifting then the latter is probably a better bet, and it is also better if you want to work out every day as it alternates between cardio and resistance sessions. This training method is great for weight loss.

CrossFit is better for building muscle and strength, however if you train too often you risk overworking yourself. You are also more likely to accidentally injure yourself, as the weights will be heavier and closer to your maximum ability. However, if you have a background in training with weights it can be very effective.

Following a program on your own

Some people who work long or unpredictable hours might find it more convenient to exercise alone. As I have already mentioned, it is very difficult for someone without a background in personal training to come up with a good program that they will be able to stick to, so it is probably worth paying for access to a professionally designed one.

Most home exercise will focus on fitness and is designed primarily with women in mind. Probably the most popular example of this is the Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide, which has a huge Instagram following. The program features a combination of running and home cardio workouts, and is designed to shed fat and tone your body.

Home programs will also often come with a diet for you to follow to maximise your results. Another popular one, the 12 Week Body Transformation (run by Biggest Loser coach Michelle Bridges), is very detailed in this regard, with a personalised nutrition plan included in the workout subscription.

Following meal plans is especially useful if your goal is to lose weight, although the plan can help you with muscle building as well. Method Makia, for example, aims to help you to lose fat while gaining muscle by giving you a ketogenic style diet – but letting you eat as much of it as you want.

Following a program on your own

At the end of the day different things will work for different people. If you are self-motivated enough to follow a program on your own, then subscribing to one that gives you home workouts is a great way to go. If you’re a person who needs a bit of a push then signing up for classes can help you to stick to your plan.

You will also need to work out what your goals are when you choose which of the many workout plans you choose. You need to work out if you are trying to lose weight, build muscle, tone your body or just generally be fitter – or any combination (or even all) of these goals. You should also consider whether or not you want a diet plan to go with the exercise.

Everything you need to know about council permits for skip bins

Skip bins are the most convenient way for disposing of waste. There are many other reasons related to this growing popularity of the skip bins.

First of all, it is the perfect way to dispose of a huge amount of commercial rubbish. At the same time, even homeowners can resort to a skip bin hire to clean up their property after a renovation, storm damage, garden makeover or a simple de-cluttering.

So, regardless of any type of waste, a skip bin can be a perfect solution for rubbish removal. Depending on the types of waste generated, you need to sort out the waste. Once you are sorted, the next step is finding the right skip bin for you.

Do I need a council permit to hire a skip bin?

Well, it depends.

Hiring a skip bin requires a council permit depending on where you are going to place it. Though, this general process of seeking a permit may vary from council to council. Each council may have their own specific set of requirements in terms of where you can place the skip bin.

So, before you set out to hire a skip bin, it is recommended to explore the types and sizes of skip bin available. This will further narrow down your requirement of seeking a permit depending on the size, type and location of the skip bin.

Well, in most cases, the best option is to place a skip in your own property. This straight away eliminates the need to apply for a permit. But this is not always possible – especially if you live in an apartment or unit where there is no driveway, yard or enough access for a skip to be placed.

Hence, the next best option is the public property – unless your neighbours don’t have any issue with it. In this case, you will obviously need permission for placing a skip.

What comes under public property?

Roads and streets are definitely a public property – so, you need to be careful regarding the permits if this is where you are planning to place the skip.

Does your street have a nature strip? The nature strip is a piece of land between the front boundary of your property and the street. These nature strips often include a footpath, though, it isn’t always necessary. Now, this comes under a council property, so if any part of your skip is on the strip, you will require a permit.

Additionally, any part of your driveway that extends the legal boundary of your property will also be considered under the public property. So, when you are placing your skip on a public property, there are certain considerations to be met.

Considerations while applying for a council permit

The general information needed while applying for a council permit involves:

  • Why do you need a skip bin?
  • Where are you planning to place the skip?
  • What duration will you keep the skip on the public property?
  • From where are you hiring the skip bin services?
  • What type of skin bin are you planning to hire?
Skip bin

Applying for a council permit

The first thing to check before hiring a skip bin company is that they are registered with the respective council. Also, they should have provided the details of their public liability insurance to the council.

The council permit can be obtained by both – you or the skip bin operator. You will have to pay a fee in most council areas. Also, you will need to give a certain amount of advance notice along with the specifications mentioned above. The authorised council officer will assess the application and inspect the placement of the bin. The cost of permits and the duration of this process will vary significantly depending on the area.

There are certain norms that you need to adhere to while getting the permit from the council:

  • You should complete the application form and send it to the council in advance.
  • You must not place the bin in no stopping areas, clearway, loading zones, bus zones, driveways, pathways and on the heavy traffic roads.
  • The bin must not cause any obstruction to the pedestrians or motorists on the road.
  • You must leave a minimum space for the traffic to move around freely. This space is different for different councils. For instance, it is 4 metres in Maribyrnong council and 3 metres in the city of Port Phillip.
  • The waste generated and collected must not cause any potential health hazard to the residents as well as the environment like rotting or causing offensive odours.
  • The skip bin must be fitted with a side marker light and this light must operate effectively and should be clearly visible.
  • The name and contact details of the skip bin company must be clearly visible on the skip bin.
  • The entire process of placing and removing the skip bin must not cause any damage to the public property.
  • Still, if any damage is caused due to whatsoever reason, the permit holder will be liable to bear the costs.

Summing up

Basically, if it is your personal property, you won’t need a council permit to place a skip bin. But, in a case when you are planning to use the public property for the same, getting a council permit becomes imperative. It is recommended to check out your respective council norms and go ahead with the application process.

8 painting tips to keep your home looking fresh and new

Once the gargantuan task of home painting is complete, you’re just going to want to sit back, relax and enjoy the new look you’ve injected your “haunts” with.

But whether it was a hired contractor who tackled the project or your own efforts that yielded the colourful results, the act of painting your house’s interior or exterior is a major investment of time and money…and you should always be considering the ways to keep it looking its best.

Taken from a post-painting perspective, extending the longevity of your paint as much as possible is the goal, and we have some great residential painting tips to offer in this area.

Maintaining interior paint

Checking for spots and stains

Spots and stains will accumulate on your home painting job over time; to ease the discomfort of cleaning difficult-to-remove spots from your walls, it’s best to get to them immediately. This technique may sound simple on the surface but consider that you may not be aware of spots upon their initial appearance.

Take some time to examine high-traffic areas, as this will help you pinpoint potential spots that need treatment. You can rest assured knowing that when we say these high-traffic areas encompass staircase walls, hallways, kitchens and kids’ bedrooms, it’s an accurate statement. Additionally, pay attention to areas where pets or children enjoy play time or where furniture – including chairs or sofas – touches the walls.

Cleaning spots and stains

Upon determining an area that needs cleaning, we recommend washing it with a damp sponge; if deeper cleaning is necessary, add a small amount of dishwasher detergent to the damp sponge (though don’t make it soaking wet).

Dealing with mould

Mould loves high levels of humidity and warmth, so for warm and humid rooms – like basements and bathrooms – you can purchase special paints that prevent the emergence of mould (you can also ask a professional painter how they can help with the application of such paints). If you do find a wall with mould or mildew on it, examine the affected area to determine the infestation’s severity.

You can clean it using a solution of one-part bleach to four parts water (ensure to test the bleach solution on a small spot initially) – if the area is larger than nine square-feet, consider turning to a professional cleaning service.

The battle against fading paint

One of the best ways to avoid paint that fades are to invest in a high-quality paint right from the get-go. Professional painters always inform clients that colour fade, when using a high-quality paint (even in bright sunlight), is not a problem. If you are uncertain as to the quality of paint currently on your walls, use shades or curtains to block incoming sunlight.

Maintaining exterior paint

Avoiding rot

Did you know that paint provides much more than just injections of colour to the surface of your home? It’s true.

It also retards the process of rotting and weathering of surfaces, and therefore it’s important to check that the undersides of corner boards are fully painted – whether you’re painting your home yourself or turning to a professional. If the bottom of corner boards isn’t painted, it will absorb water and cause the board to rot.

Frequency of maintenance

Exterior paint maintenance is dependent on the material or siding that is used on your home, and we can tell you that paint on stucco generally endures longer than it does on wood trim. What does this mean for homeowners? Those with wood siding should expect to repaint their homes more often than those with stucco.

Environment is also a factor here, in that it plays a role in the life of your paint job; homeowners living in milder climates will experience longer-lasting paint jobs than those who live in harsher environments. Generally, though, you should expect to repaint your home every six to 10 years.

Dealing with the spectres of mould and mildew (again)

Once more, the growth of mould and mildew rear their ugly heads when the subject of exterior paint comes up. To avoid this problem, you can purchase exterior paint with special additives that will help prevent mould and mildew from taking hold and attacking surfaces.

Three-coat system

During an exterior paint job, problem areas could develop due to exposure to the elements, and we can tell you from vast experience that after years of vulnerability to rain, wind, snow and sun, your paint can begin to peel.

If you are experiencing problem areas on the exterior of your home, such as peeling window seals or fascia boards, it’s a good idea to put two coat finishes on those areas. Professional painters take care of this for clients when they’re hired, starting with a high-quality primer paint followed by two coats of finish paint (thus, a “three-coat system”).

A quality paint job will bring new life to your interior and exterior, and when properly maintained, can last for years. By following our tips, you can keep your paint looking like new throughout the full lifetime of your investment while enjoying the look of your home for years to come.

Indonesia FTA still in jeopardy surrounding proposed Israel Embassy move

Nearly a month has passed since Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s suggestion to move Australia’s Israel Embassy to Jerusalem prompted a negative response from Indonesia.

Indonesia, being pro-Palestinian in its foreign affairs, expressed concern of what many believed was a knee-jerk decision to win over Israeli voters in the Wentworth by-election. In a recent meeting, Indonesia President Joko Widodo raised the issue with Scott Morrison.

In that meeting it was hoped that the Government would sign the $16 billion dollar trade deal with Indonesia. However, the future of that deal is again in doubt.

After his meeting with President Widodo, Scott Morrison said that the decision on the Israel embassy would be made before Christmas.

Reports from Fairfax media indicate that Australian officials have told Indonesian officials that there’s a “less than 5 percent” chance of the embassy being moved to Jerusalem.

Earlier in the year Scott Morrison, who was still treasurer at the time, said that there was no sense for the Liberal Party to support moving Australia’s embassy to Jerusalem.

However, in the lead-up the Wentworth by-election, which was won by Independent Kerryn Phelps, Scott Morrison shifted his stance an announced Australia could possibly look into moving its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, tacitly endorsing the ancient, multi-faith city as Israel’s capital.

Wentworth has a high Jewish population and it was suggested by critics that this was the only reason the Prime Minister leant towards this change in foreign policy. Federal Labor was particularly harsh in condemning the Prime Minister for allegedly making reactionary, high-level foreign policy decisions for the sake of winning a by-election and putting Australia’s national interests in jeopardy.

Foord spearheads Matildas in sweet revenge against Chile

Following a very rare defeat at home against Chile (3-2) in Penrith last Saturday, the Matildas have taken brutal revenge in Newcastle on Tuesday with a 5-0 second half thrashing of their rivals from across the Pacific. Caitlin Foord was the spark for Australia, scoring a hat-trick herself and setting up Sam Kerr for the opening goal.

In the first half the Matilda’s looked like the more threatening side but were unable to break the Chilean defence, in a repeat of the Penrith loss. Shortly after half-time, however, Foord finally broke through to set Kerr up for the first goal of the match. A minute later she was set up for her first goal herself, slamming the ball into the net in a great finishing play.

Now 2-0 up due to two brilliant plays in two minutes, the Matildas looked to pile on the pain against a broken Chile. Foord found herself in with a chance at a long range shot after an intercept and she took it, slamming the ball into the corner if the goal as if she had it on a string.

Replacement Emily Gielnik found some luck with a long range shot of her own before Foord, fittingly, ended proceedings with another outstanding finishing shot in the 89th minute. The second half rout was a fitting response for the shock loss in Penrith, and will have renewed faith that the Australian team are among the best in the world.

The Matildas are the 6th best women’ s football team in the world, according to FIFA rankings, while Chile are 39th. With 177 teams included in the rankings this makes them more evenly matched than the rankings would appear.
