Bryon and Nicki Hein own and operate Party Favor Event Rentals, a company that rents out bounce houses, slides (water and dry), furniture and concession machines in Ohio, in the US. Their party equipment is great for kids’ birthday parties, end of school function or any event where people need entertaining activities to do!

Bryon and Nicki, what made you start up Party Favor Event Rentals?

After renting bounce houses and inflatable water slides for our kids we decided we wanted to explore the industry. We attended expos, safety courses and researched the industry for a year. With the help of our kids we picked out units and jumped right into our business adventure.

What sizes of bounce houses to you offer?

We have a few different sizes. Our classic bounce houses are 15’ L x 15’ W x 15’ H. For larger events we have obstacle courses that are 40’ L x 11’ W x 11 H’ or inflatable slides that are  35’ L x 15’ W x 18’ H.  Typical back yard parties can accommodate our bounce house slide combos and those are 15’ L x 29’ W x 15’ H.

You have an Advanced Inflatable Safety Operations Certification – what does this mean?

Advanced Inflatable Safety Operations Certification is a seal that indicates the operator has successfully passed the Advanced Inflatable Safety Operations Certification course.  This course is designed to provide operators with the knowledge, skills and abilities to safely operate moonwalks, mazes, combo units, obstacle courses and larger slides. AISOC is the hardest level to achieve and sets these advanced members at the top of our industry.

Is it ever unsafe to use your equipment?

Yes! The number one element that makes our equipment unsafe is weather. It is very dangerous to operate inflatables during high winds or lightning. We educate our customer how to tell if wind speeds are too high (20MPH or more) and what steps to take. When conditions become unsafe the units need to be evacuated and shut off. We stake down every unit with 18” stakes at each anchor point. If stakes can’t be used, we attach 100Lb sandbags at each anchor point.

How many kids can play in your bounce houses at a time?

This is a very common question and there are a few answers. Classic bounce houses can hold about 750Lbs. So depending on the age group and weight 4-8 people can jump at the same time. We tell our renters that they want groups that are jumping together to be similar in size and weight. Things can get dangerous when teenagers are jumping with toddlers. On the other hand, slides can only accommodate on person at a time.

Do you have any requirements regarding where you can set up?

Outdoor setups need to be on a flat surface free of sticks or rocks. Also, we must know if there are any sprinkler systems underground. If they have a sprinkler system, we can’t use stakes and need to use sandbags to anchor the unit. For indoor setups we need at least 16” ceiling clearance.

What is your most commonly rented item?

Our most commonly rented item would be our combo units. They seem to be popular with every age. Smaller kids enjoy the classic bounce houses and older kids seem to want slides. Corporate events or larger groups usually rent an obstacle course. We also find that we sell out of water units every weekend in July and August.

The construction industry is heavily dependent upon earth moving resources for completing any project. Any civil work starts with land preparation, excavating and eliminating the obstacles around.

The excavating contractors who provide such services cannot be called as mere dirt haulers. They perform a wide range of tasks smoothly. It’s a skilled job which involves land survey, job planning, digging, grading, making drainage system and other custom jobs as required by the site condition.

The most important part of the job is handling heavy equipment in the narrow and difficult landscape. According to IBISWorld’s US market research report published in Dec- 2017, the excavation contractors industry has marked a growth of 5% from 2012-17. The total employment was 298,548 and business revenue was worth $59bn.

This clearly indicates the workload and presence of skilled human resources to handle the jobs. The main part of the revenue is derived from private residential and non-residential properties.

Major Jobs Executed by the Service Providers

  • Land Preparation

The site crew, along with the expert, surveys the land and discusses the scope of the job. Before starting the digging process, the surrounding area is observed carefully. Stripping is done to remove vegetation and other top layer unwanted items. Any obstacle or old construction on the site is demolished.

If there is no safe approach to the site for movement of heavy equipment, it is also created. The safety department of the site gives clearance for manpower and equipment to work on the site.

  • Digging Work

In the residential area, the main job involves excavating for basements and foundation. If the site is bigger, the swimming pool hole is also ordered by many clients.

In the non-residential areas like park or field, the artificial pond is also constructed by the company. After formation of the foundation, the excavators help in completing the soil back-fill work.

For utility works like water, electrical and telephone line creation, the earth movers have a keen role to play. In fact, all other departments in the construction site rely on these people for executing their work in some way.

  • Site Finalization

The project planning department provides guidance for making an outlet for the drainage system. The nearby trenches or sewage that may harm the site in future is also removed with the help of these digging resources. The disposal of waste materials away from the site is also a part of the agreement.

Once the required jobs are completed, we see the beginning of the grading and the surface smoothing process being carried out and the site becomes ready for starting the construction work.

Some may further hire the equipment facilitator for creating an easy approachable road to the site and clearing the side areas for plantation or creating boundaries. In certain cases this may be necessary in order to complete the task of may significantly improve the speed with which it is completed.

Types of Equipment Used

There are basically two types of tools and machinery used in the excavating a site.

i. Hand Tools

ii. Power Operated Machinery

As you may have observed that in a construction site, the hand tools like hoe, pick-axe, spade, shovel, mattock, trowel and rake help in completing the manual works which can’t be done by machines. These tools are operated by labors under the guidance of site supervisor.

Typical machinery involves back hoe & tracked excavators, bulldozer, dragline, wheeled trenchers etc. Some custom machinery is also deployed based on the requirements. This heavy equipment operation requires certified skilled operators.

There is a wide range of construction technology that is used and the majority of it requires a qualified operator to use it.

Cost of the Service

The cost of such work is derived based on the scope of work. Its total cost covers compensation of equipment, labor charges, material cost, and all other items that were utilized for the project, including incidental expenses.

The Greens party is pushing for a billion dollar funding pledge in order to make public infrastructure more accessible for those living with a disability.

The party asserts that disabled Australians are being effectively segregated from the rest of society by physical obstacles, including on public transport. The push is a factor in a larger policy plan by the Greens which wants to increase the participation of disabled Australian in housing, employment and education.

Greens disability spokesman Jordan Steele-John, who last year asked for the aged care royal commission to also investigate the disability sector, wants to help nearly 2 million disabled Australians who are living below the poverty line.

Senator Steele-John said that the reality of life for those living with a disability is “very different” for those without.

While the Greens plan is large in its scope, its immediate goal is to work to eliminate physical barriers preventing the free movement of disabled Australians. This step is asking for over $1 billion AUD to be spent on accessible infrastructure for buildings and public spaces as well as to improve accessibility for public transport.

Senator Steele-John equated the lack of a wheelchair ramp outside a building to being a sign that said “Only able-bodied people past this point”.

The Greens party is seeking one of the major parties to back their proposal and say that the funds should be levied from increased taxes on multinational corporations.
