Oscars 2019: ‘Green Book’ wins award for Best Picture

Director Peter Farrelly’s biographical drama ‘Green Book’ took home the award for Best Picture in the Oscars ceremony on Monday in spite of controversy around the film’s message.

The film has been criticised as having a “white saviour” narrative, with director Spike Lee displeased with its win. Spike Lee’s film ‘BlacKkKlansman’ was nominated for Best Picture and won Best Adapted Screenplay.

This year’s ceremony featured some unconventional nomination choices, including the film ‘Black Panther’ –the first movie in the superhero genre to receive a nomination for Best Picture – and ‘Roma’, which came from streaming service Netflix.

The ceremony was hailed for its diversity of nominees and winners following the Academy’s efforts to address the issue of inclusivity; Rami Malek from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was the first person with Egyptian heritage to win Best Actor. Films such as ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘Black Panther’ also helped to increase the number of both on and off-screen opportunities for people-of-colour.

Other winners included Alfonso Cuaron’s Mexican drama ‘Roma’, which was awarded Best Cinematography, Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film. ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ won Best Animated Feature ahead of ‘Incredibles 2’ and ‘Isle of Dogs’. Lady Gaga won her first ever Academy Award for Best Original Song with the song ‘Shallow’. And Mahershala Ali won the award for Best Supporting Actor in the film ‘Green Book’.

Despite concern that the ceremony would be a flop, 2019’s first host-free Oscars ceremony managed to pull through, achieving a modest gain in ratings up 12% from last year’s all-time low. This may in part be due to the presence of high-profile performers like Queen and Lady Gaga helping to attract viewers.

The 91st Academy Awards lack of a host proved to help streamline the event and place the focus on the nominees; it is unclear as to whether this will be a permanent adoption.

Ellyse Perry leads Australia to victory over NZ with maiden ODI century

Ellyse Perry has finally scored her first international one-day century, leading Australia to a series win over New Zealand. Perry powered the Aussies to 7-247 off 50 overs, hitting a boundary off the second-last ball of the innings to move to 101 not out.

Perry was dealt some luck, however, as her boundary to bring up her first ODI ton was dropped over the rope. She then punished the last ball for six to finish on 107 not out, while pushing Australia to a competitive total of 247. Her innings was a crucial one, since Australia’s middle order struggled, placing increased pressure on Perry. Lanning (3) and Haynes (16) were dismissed in consecutive overs, leaving Australia 2-50.

Jess Jonassen also shines

While Perry’s feat with the bat was the most talked about topic of the day, Australian spinner, Jess Jonassen, ensured the Australians retained the Rose Bowl trophy. Jonassen backed up her efforts in the closely-fought first match with a five-wicket haul. She finished with 5-27 from eight overs, recording her second five wicket haul in an international fixture.

New Zealand capitulate

None of the Kiwi women could really get a solid innings going and build a foundation for their run chase. Perry backed up her ton by taking the first wicket of the match (Suzie Bates), leaving New Zealand 1-17 after six overs. Unfortunately, they continued to lose wickets at crucial stages, as Sophie Devine top scored with 47. The White Ferns were eventually rolled for just 152 inside 38 overs, as Australia recorded an emphatic 95 run win.

Aussie men fall over the line against India

In other news, the Australian men’s team have recorded a nail-biting victory over India in their first international T20 fixture in Visakhapatnam, India. The Australians bowled well to constrain India to just 7-126 off 20 overs. The Aussie men appeared to be cruising before Glenn Maxwell was dismissed after scoring an important half-century off 40 balls. This prompted a mini-collapse, however, not quite on par with the Melbourne Stars in the BBL final. D’Arcy Short was run out for 37, followed Ashton Turner (0), Peter Handscomb (13) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (4) all being dismissed quickly.

However, Australia’s golden boy, Pat Cummins, strode to the crease with Australia needing 14 off the last over. Jhye Richardon chipped in with a handy boundary, as Cummins slotted a four and a two off the last two balls to help Australia to a three wicket win.

Why business process outsourcing is growing in Australia

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) has been steadily growing in popularity for businesses around the world, and it’s for a good reason. BPO provides outstanding opportunities to improve productivity and create more efficient business processes, so it’s no surprise to see Australian businesses wasting no time in jumping onto the BPO bandwagon.

What is BPO?

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is a growing trend whereby companies move some of their processes to a third-party provider, which is most often situated offshore.

The growth of BPO is fuelled in part by increasing demand in the downstream business sector, or those functions of a business that are close to the end user. This includes things like customer service or IT support. It’s more cost effective to shift low-value, yet resource intensive tasks to overseas operators as this frees up an Australian business to extend more of its resources towards developing higher value opportunities.

As more and more businesses seek to improve efficiency and increase profitability, BPO’s enormous potential for creating growth will only see the trend continue to gain in popularity.

What services can BPO provide?

Traditionally, businesses would complete all operations in-house, however, a more efficient strategy is to outsource these processes to offshore operations. There is a massive demand not just for non- technical tasks, but also more specialised services. This demand has seen a growing trend for Australian companies to shift legal tasks, content writing, translation jobs and IT services to BPO providers.

Customer support

Call centres that provide customer support service via phone and email are a favourite target for BPO firms. Economies of scale can be attained, as a call centre can provide greater coverage for more customers at a lower cost than if the processes are handled in-house.

Marketing

Telemarketing is an expensive business process that is necessary to generate awareness of a business’ goods and services. However, it’s not a service that is geographically limited and so is the perfect candidate for BPO. Indeed, this can allow a company to create interest in its products at a greatly reduced cost.

Back office functions

Back office functions such as payroll processing, data entry, bookkeeping and the like are no longer limited to being completed in-house and are also perfect candidates for BPO. Overseas third- party providers can provide excellent, accurate typists and professional bookkeeping/accounting services to potentially save an Australian-based company many thousands of dollars a year.

Web design and social media marketing services

The importance of maintaining an online presence is more important than ever, however, it can be a massive drain on resources and challenging to calculate an accurate ROI. Overseas BPO firms can provide the talent and expertise a company needs to create and maintain a dynamic online and social media presence at a lower cost compared to most homegrown talent.

Software design

Finding talented software design professionals can be a challenge for even the largest companies. However, with BPO providing access to a global pool of technical talent, it’s much easier for a business with an idea for a smartphone app or computer application to turn it into a reality.

Access to advanced systems

Infrastructure such as communication lines and IT resources are expensive to install and maintain, especially in a country like Australia. This is because the population is sparsely distributed across a large geographical area. Computer and software systems have a notoriously short lifecycle and soon need to be upgraded and updated. BPO provides the opportunity for businesses to access advanced software that they would not be able to afford otherwise.

Low cost of entry

BPO often provides an opportunity for businesses to enter into a market that would otherwise be a risky and expensive endeavour. Being able to outsource dramatically lowers the cost, and subsequently, the risk of investing heavily into machinery, labour and other forms of specialised capital.

Flexibility

BPO frees up resources for companies to scale their business without being tied down with the mundane but otherwise critical office tasks. With access to more resources and time, they are now free to develop and improve the core components of their operations or explore new opportunities.

Who is thriving with BPO?

Because BPO makes a lot of financial sense, a lot of small to medium sized enterprises are utilising the various services available to enhance their viability in the marketplace and remain more competitive. BPO provides affordable solutions for Australian businesses both large and small and everything in between. With the amount of profit BPO can bring to the table, many of Australia’s industry leaders are taking advantage of what it can offer.

Companies like Telstra, Optus, and Jetstar have been taking advantage of BPO for many years. Serving millions of customers presents many financial and logistical challenges. BPO provides cost-savings that benefit their customer base by freeing up resources to provide better service, room to invest in new technologies, and maintain existing infrastructure to a high standard.

The future of BPO

There continues to be a growing demand for human resources and technical expertise, especially in the digital and online sectors, but these services are often out of reach for emerging businesses. However, BPO offers more than just cost savings. It also opens a wider talent pool for Australian organisations to draw from when developing strategies to improve business outcomes. BPO can help fledgling companies remain viable in an increasingly competitive market, while helping established companies improve their operational efficiency, quality and overall output.

Scott Morrison announces Climate Solutions Fund to reduce emissions

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is announcing a new climate change election policy that will see $2 billion allocated towards projects to reduce Australian emissions.

The policy is an extension of The Emissions Reduction Fund introduced by former prime minister Tony Abbott and is designed to ensure Australia meets its 2030 emission reduction target as set out in The Paris Agreement.

The program is designed to run for 10 years and supply money to local governments, farmers and businesses in order to fund projects like replacing refrigeration and lighting systems, revegetating land plus reducing the risk of bushfires.

He said that “We acknowledge and accept the challenge of addressing climate change, but we do so with cool heads, not just impassioned hearts,”

In spite of government projections creating doubt about Australia’s ability to meet its 2030 target, the Prime Minister stressed otherwise.

Mr Morrison said that the Emission Reduction Fund had “been an incredibly successful program”, citing that it had supplied 193 million tonnes in reductions and that it was “always our intention” to expand the policy “to ensure we meet our 2030 targets, which we will.”

Some experts have expressed concern about whether or not the 2030 goal will be reached based on the counting of credits leftover from the prior Kyoto targets.

The Coalition’s National Energy Guarantee was dropped shortly after Scott Morrison replaced Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister in a leadership spill.

Mark Butler, the Shadow Climate Change Minister, said that if Labor won the election it would scrap such a policy. He said that the Coalition was going to make taxpayers “foot the bill for something that big polluters should be doing”.

Mr Butler questioned the Government’s sincerity in suddenly announcing a climate change policy so close to an election, saying that “the question really here is whether people would trust a Government that has spent five years trashing climate policy” and “led by a Prime Minister who brought a lump of coal into the Parliament,”

Labor has announced its own reduction target of 45% by 2030. Mr Morrsion said that Labor’s policy was “reckless” and that it would ruin Australia’s economy.

Brumbies shine, Reds show positive signs and Waratahs fall over the line

In round 2 of Super Rugby 2019 the Brumbies were the clear pick of the Australian sides, cleaning up the Chiefs 54-17 in Canberra and sending shockwaves through the competition. The Reds fell to the Highlanders in their first match of the season, but the 36-31 loss will give their fans plenty of hope for the season. The Waratahs, meanwhile, caused television screens across NSW to be smashed in frustration as they limped to a single point victory over wooden spoon favourites the Sunwolves.

The Reds kicked off the weekend of Super Rugby in Dunedin, where they showed a refreshing new style of ball in hand play that immediately paid dividends. Despite being behind by more than a try on 3 separate occasions, the Reds used their monster forward pack and centres to smash their way through the Highlander’s defence and fight back.

The Waratahs, playing in Tokyo against the Sunwolves, were horrendous. They were guilty of “trying to play like the Harlem Globetrotters” as captain Michael Hooper said after the match, and fell into the Japanese side’s ambush of trying to match their loose play. Fortunately for the Waratahs, and unluckily for the Sunwolves, they are just about the only team in the competition who can match them in loose, open play.

The locals almost recorded their first ever win over the men from Sydney, with five-eighth Hayden Parker having a golden opportunity to steal a win with a drop goal at the death. Karmichael Hunt read the play, however, and put enough pressure on Parker to cause the kick to go astray.

The Brumbies were by far the pick of the Australian teams, putting on an absolute clinic in running rugby to tear the Chiefs apart. Five-eighth Christian Lealiifano recovered to play his best rugby since his leukemia diagnosis in 2016, and led the way to build on a strong performance from the forwards and unleash the outside backs.

Michael Jackson’s estate sues HBO for $100 million

Michael Jackson’s estate is suing HBO and its parent company Time Warner over a documentary they are set to air next month. The lawsuit has been filed in  Los Angeles Superior Court and suggests that by airing ‘Leaving Neverland’ the channel is breaching a deal to not disparage the singer.

The contract that the network is said to be breaching was initially written up in 1992 before airing one of Jackson’s concerts. This old contract allowed the network to air ‘Michael Jackson in Concert in Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour.’ This old contract states that the network is not allowed to criticise or vilify the singer.

The new HBO documentary ‘Leaving Neverland’ is about two men who claim that the late singer molested them when they were children. The description of the show reads “At the height of his stardom Michael Jackson began long-running relationships with two boys, aged 7 and 10, and their families. Now in their 30s, they tell the story of how they were sexually abused by Jackson, and how they came to terms with it years later.”

Jackson’s estate denounces the allegations against the singer and the documentary as a whole, stating that it “is yet another lurid production in an outrageous and pathetic attempt to exploit and cash in on Michael Jackson”.

Representatives of Jackson’s estate have also said that “Michael is an easy target because he is not here to defend himself” they went on to argue that “the law does not protect the deceased from defamation, no matter how extreme the lies are.”

The lawsuit is complicated, due to the nature of the contract and the fact that Jackson is no longer alive. However, runners of Jackson’s estate note that “Michael Jackson is innocent. Period”.

Regardless of the lawsuit, HBO are determined to not let it impact their plans. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO stated “Despite the desperate lengths taken to undermine the film, our plans remain unchanged. HBO will move forward with the airing of Leaving Neverland, the two-part documentary, on March 3rd and 4th. This will allow everyone the opportunity to assess the film and the claims in it for themselves.”

This means that legal proceedings are likely to continue, unless another agreement is reached. According to sources, the Jackson Estate seeks “all damages proximately caused by HBO’s reprehensible disparagement of Michael Jackson, which could exceed $100 million”.

The evolution of product reviews: the old, the new and the weird

When reviewing a product or posting any feedback for a service or product, platforms usually utilise the star rating system. They are used for the platform’s own ratings as well as the customer themselves. While the conventional star rating has become mainstream, several websites are now adding “reaction” ratings to their reviews and articles.

But do these new types of ratings add some kind of benefit to the reader? Are they able to ascertain the quality of the product or service they are viewing with reactions from people, or is the star-rating still the best method? Well, let’s break down the three conventional methods of product evaluation.

The old: star ratings

Man rating a product
Star-ratings are quite old, yet still seen as reliable. Photo: geralt, Pixabay

Star-ratings are a phenomenal addition to the digital world. Although some people pay little attention to star ratings, a lot of reviewers do find them helpful. The problem with the star rating system is it rather plain. Sometimes, the five-star system is not be enough to convey the message and usually, the customers have to leave verbal reviews. However, if you increase the number of stars, let’s say introduce a 10-star rating system, then it can become too complicated.

Having said this, star-rating systems are still really common in the marketplace. It’s a standard that, despite having some shortcomings, is viewed as reliable and carries the least amount of risk when it comes to consumer confusion.

The weird: mascot ratings

Mascot ratings are something rather new in the digital world. In most cases, we can see a specific character that is exclusive to the platform. There are many notable examples used by a vast array of businesses. The advantages of this system are numerous. One of the biggest benefits is brand recognition. This means that no matter how much other people try to mimic the method, your mascot will be unique to your brand. Needless to say, the mascot needs to be associated with the logo of your company and be consistent in its presence. If utilised correctly, it can be a defining moment for the brand recognition of companies and websites.

However, mascot ratings do have some disadvantages as well. The most notable weakness is the complex structure of the whole system. Here’s where the mascot rating system falls short of the traditional star-rating system. It needs to be explained. There, this one little inconvenience could be the detriment of the innovation.

Although most people have a lot of time on their hands when surfing the internet, not too many are willing to view a long explanation of your rating system. It needs to be understood the moment a viewer sees it. That’s why I mentioned the star-rating system as the least risky because it doesn’t need an explanation.

If a website is not able to explain their mascot rating system in a few words, then it could pose a problem  and actually confuse their viewer base. But the attention-capturing nature of the system could be a strong counterweight to that issue.

The new: emoji ratings

A primary example of Emoji ratings could be Facebook. Indeed, users can now include reactions on any post, however, this can be abused. When using these emoji ratings for a product or a service, it is very important to make them as expressive and interactive as possible. There needs to be several options. Things like “happy”, “disappointed”, “angry” and “amazed” are simple words that can quickly convey a message that the star-rating system can over-complicate.

But a website needs to make sure that this rating system has only relevant options. So having a “funny” review emoji on a product doesn’t say much really.

I think the advantages and disadvantages are quite clear with the emoji-rating system. It is a lot more expressive than the star-rating system and pretty much equivalent to the mascot-system. However, if done incorrectly, it will lose all of its value and purpose. It will turn into a tool to be abused and will not give the viewers any valid information. This carries a lot more risk than the star-rating system.

Let’s wrap it up

So we have these 3 rating systems that are good in their own ways. However, when making a website or a platform for reviews, it is extremely hard to determine which one is more relevant.

In most cases, website admins just don’t want to risk it and choose the star-rating system to be as simplistic as possible. Even if it is limited in its value, it gets the job done and does not introduce a learning curve for the viewer.

The mascot-system is a great way to distinguish a brand, however, it carries the risk in the form of a steep learning curve for the audience. This is something that may cause a viewer to simply leave because of confusion.

The emoji-system is less risky, however, it doesn’t add any recognition to the brand as they are quite plain. The main risk associated with this option is the probability of over-doing it. Meaning, the system could inherently undermine itself because of too many reactions. Herein, the reviews lose all value.

How to use email marketing to ensure your app succeeds

App development companies make all kinds of effort at the time of app development. But they need to understand the importance of adopting relevant marketing practices. These marketing practices prove to be extremely important for the success of the app development process and the final product as well.

There are several different strategies that businesses can choose from depending on the type of the app they are developing. These strategies would further help in boosting product sales. One of these marketing strategies has proven to be effective and successful in improving an app’s sales is email marketing. Business experts believe that email marketing is capable of having a great impact on the revenue of any business, be it big or small. This is why it is regarded as the most effective digital marketing strategy by a lot of mobile app development companies.

Every brand wants to beat its competition and hold the top spot in the market. This is the reason many app development companies have now started adopting email marketing skills. App developers are spending time and resources for email marketing in order to promote their products. It is really good to know that companies are now willing to spend as much time promoting their final products. In order to reach their target audience, there are several different channels that are being used.

Adopting an email marketing strategy for app promotion

The more content you promote, the easier and quicker it will be for your product to stand out in comparison with the other competing products. The same thing applies to companies that belong to the mobile app development spectrum. App development companies across the world have now realized the importance of establishing an effective app marketing strategy. But there is only a certain level of success that can be achieved. But if you observe closely, you will notice that there are constant improvements in how these relevant marketing strategies are being adopted.

Let us take a look at how some of these companies are adopting email marketing strategies in order to improve their app promotion process.

Reach out to the targeted users

The email marketing process begins even before the final product is developed and launched in the market. It is extremely crucial for app developers to create a certain impact on the market for reaching out to their target customers. So, in the first step of developing this marketing strategy, you really should know more about your target customers, even before you start the app development process. This is the right way to create a list of customers you would like to reach out to when selling your products and services.

For this, you need to have a strong email database. This is the only way to have a great start to a successful email marketing campaign. To be able to build a credible email database, you need to reach out to your target audience first. The target audience of your product includes both past and present customers. Then there are prospective clients as well. You can’t understand what your users are looking for without reaching out to them and getting to know about their choices and preferences.

One of the most effective ways to gather relevant information about your users is it get in touch with them. Reach out to your target customers as this will help you establish a long-term relationship with them. This also gives the users an insight as to what you are offering through your app. The users are sure to notice things they didn’t see before. This is a subtle way to promote your app. But you are then expected to maintain this link and keep a constant touch with your target customers throughout the entire app development process. Your target users will act as the backbone of your business. This will allow your users to know more about your app even before it is launched.

Making use of emails

Using emails for promoting your mobile app is one of the most popular and reliable channels for most app development companies. Majority of companies have now started adopting email marketing to reach out to the target customers. In this step, the email features the app and it is sent right away to the users. Any company, be it iPhone app development or android app development company, that does not include the app in the email is sure to miss out some really big opportunities of promoting their mobile apps.

The reason why this method has been helpful is that it not only help developers in promoting their apps. It works as an effective channel through which users can get to learn more about the app and how to engage with it. Email marketing has the capacity to boosting an app’s promotion strategy. Developers just need to make sure that their app link is provided properly in every email and newsletter that is being sent out to the target audience.

Make sure you are interacting effectively

Just like any website, it is important to maintain a high level of interactivity with the target audience. This allows you to establish better engagement with the audience when you send out your emails. Interactive emails are more catchy and, because of this, are really effective in boosting customer engagement. Many businesses are seeing the benefits of this in the way of revenue and user following by the way of integrating interactive emails.

Any marketing strategy, be it email marketing or any other marketing methods lead to better conversions for the brand and business. This can only be achieved by the way of enhancing customer engagement. App developers need to learn how to display their apps effectively in the emails. There are many ways in which the emails can be made more interactive.

Wrap up

It is now important for app developers to make sure that the emails are concise and to the point. Even the interactivity of the emails must be taken care of. Each email needs to personalised and targeted to the customer reading it. This is why incorporating an email marketing strategy is crucial for every mobile app development company.

Kim Kardashian defends Khloe Kardashian over attending an event post-split

The Kardashians are undoubtedly one of the most famous and well known families in the world. Their hit show ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ has made all members of the family household names.

However, with this recognition comes the fact that millions of people know virtually everything about the family; this results in judgement and online trolls.

The most recent Kardashian news to be circulating revolves around Khloe’s split with long term partner, NBA player Tristan Thompson.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the Cleveland Cavaliers player was involved in a cheating scandal with Kylie Jenner’s best friend, Jordyn Woods. The allegations began when Thompson was seen making out with 21 year old model Woods at his house party in Los Angeles.

Despite having a 10 month old child, True, together, Khloe reportedly ended her relationship with Thompson as soon as she heard the news of his infidelity.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtsEMyoFh30/

The entire Kardashian family has stayed relatively quiet about the drama, and has avoided speaking about it. This was until Khloe faced backlash for attending a Pretty Little Thing store opening.

The tweet that sparked Kim Kardashian to defend her sister Khloe was “If someone cheats on you publicly. Y’all going outside the next day?”.

Kim immediately took to social media to defend Khloe, saying “Would you prefer she lose the [money emoji] too?” the mogul went on to say that “A single mom has to work too boo!”.

Kim argued that Khloe would not let her personal life get in the way of her professional commitments “”This was a professional commitment planned far in advance”.

The Kardashians pride themselves on being strong women that do not rely on their partners to look after them. Kim also claimed that “you better believe she is not waiting on anyone to pay her bills or provide for her daughter.”

It appears that Khloe approved of her sisters post and gave it a like on Thursday.

More details about the cheating scandal are still surfacing, but it is said that Woods is “living her worst nightmare”.

As a result of the allegations, the entire Kardashian family have unfollowed Thompson and Woods on social media.
