Stephen King writes an essay clarifying his controversial Oscars comment

Stephen King retracted his controversial Tweet about the white-centric 2020 Academy Award nominations.

The esteemed author drew criticism as a member of the Academy over comments he made on Twitter saying he “would never consider diversity” as an Oscars voter. This didn’t sit well with Twitter users and fans as well as his fellow Academy member, Ava DuVernay. The filmmaker responded to King with feelings of dismay and disapproval.

Now, King wrote an essay published in the Washington Post op-ed on Monday but it didn’t echo the same sentiment as the remarks he previously made. In the piece titled “The Oscars are still rigged in favor of white people,” King retracted his comments confessing that he “stepped over one of those lines recently.”

“The subject was the Academy Awards. I also said, in essence, that those judging creative excellence should be blind to questions of race, gender or sexual orientation,” he wrote.

He continued, “I did not say that was the case today because nothing could be further from the truth.”

King clarified that performing artforms putting diversity and equality at their center “cannot be works of creative genius. They can be, and often are.” He then used Duvernay’s Netflix limited series, “When They See Us” as a “splendid” example of this.

The Institute author called out numbers within the members of the Academy saying that only 32 percent of it are women and 16 percent are from minority groups. King described the numbers as “Not good enough. Not even within shouting distance of good enough.”

How production studios plan to shift sustainability discussions into action

According to a report by the Vancouver Sun, Hollywood’s entertainment industry produces an average of 500 metric tonnes of CO2 per production. To put things in perspective, this is equivalent to over a hundred cars driving for year-round. While the industry is raking in billions of dollars in revenue, it’s also leaving a hefty carbon footprint.

Production studios are plagued with environmental challenges including set waste, transportation to locations, plastic food containers and water bottles as well as the chemicals used to achieve certain special effects.

Now, production companies have expressed their commitment to the fight against climate change. Sony Pictures announced that for each day of production, it will plant a tree in the community where filmings are held. It seeks to reach a zero carbon footprint by the year 2050 with a science-backed target every five years.

“It required us to bring in things like carbon emissions as a true focus,” says John Rego, VP of sustainability at Sony as per Variety.

Walt Disney Television corporate social responsibility chief Dave Ambroz said, “Sustainability really only works if there is a shift in the cultural mindset.” Disney introduced a full-time environmental steward to each live-action film production crew back in 2009. They are assigned to

“serve as the leader in environmental advocacy to educate the cast and crew on the best practices and habits to embrace as we forge our way to a greener world.”

These big Hollywood studios including NBCUniversal are part of a collaborative effort to focus on sustainability and green shooting. NBCUniversal’s sustainability director Shannon Bart says, “What’s been really cool is that that that alliance has grown to be inclusive of smaller productions and even some of the new streaming services.”

Irina Shayk admits occasionally “falling apart” as a single mother

Irina Shayk shared how life has changed since she and her ex-beau Bradley Cooper parted last year. The two share their 4-year-old child, Lea.

The Russian fashion model has no hard feelings for her ex as she reflected on their past relationship in an interview with British Vogue. “I think in all good relationships you bring your best and your worst — it’s just the nature of a human being,” the March 2020 issue cover girl said.

She added, “Two great people don’t have to make a good couple.”

In the end, Shayk has no regrets about the time she had with the A Star is Born actor. She didn’t shy away from getting candid about her ex. “I think we’ve been very lucky to experience what we had with each other,” she added. “Life without B is new ground.”

The two are in a co-parenting situation with their daughter but Shayk confessed that being a single mom can take its toll. She details the experience saying,

“It’s hard to find a balance between being a single mom and being a working woman and provider. Trust me, there are days I wake up and I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I don’t know what to do, I’m falling apart.’”

The Burberry ambassador also revealed why men are intimidated by her when asked about her dating life. Shayk says her “strong personality” and tendency to burn bridges gives off a “cold” exterior that “some people are really scared of.” But she’s not at all what people think of her.

Prince Andrew refuses to cooperate in Epstein inquiry, says US prosecutor

Prosecutors from the United States said on Monday that Prince Andrew has provided “zero” cooperation in an inquiry regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking case. The British royal initially made promises to aid in investigations in any way possible but has now refused to cooperate, according to, US attorney for the southern district of New York Geoffrey Berman.

Berman said at a press conference that agencies are trying to get in touch with the Duke of York for an interview but he has yet agreed to one. The Guardian reports that he will not be forced to testify, which means it is possible that Andrew won’t have to answer queries about his relationship with Epstein.

The 59-year-old son of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip suspended his public duties as a member of the British royal family indefinitely. Buckingham Palace announced the news in November last year after he was criticized for a BBC interview about his close friendship with Epstein. Andrew said at the time that he was “willing to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations if required.”

Federal prosecutors and the FBI intended to interview the prince in a probe looking into the late financier’s potential co-conspirators.

Multiple news outlets report that requests for comments have been turned down by the Buckingham Palace and the matter will instead be dealt with by Prince Andrew’s legal representatives.

Prince Andrew is known to be one of Epstein’s close companions. The latter was arrested in July last year for sex trafficking minors. He was found dead the next month in his jail cell with medical examiner ruling the cause of his death as a suicide.

Hillary Clinton weighs in on women directors in film

Hillary Clinton is the subject of a Hulu original docu-series that premiered at the annual Sundance Film Festival. “Hillary” is a four-hour unscripted limited series about the politician seen from a more personal perspective. It looks at her milestones as a former first lady, Secretary of State and the first female presidential nominee.

35 hours worth of interviews with Nanette Burstein will let audiences peer behind the curtain of the political figure’s life.

At the Sundance Film Festival, Clinton sat down and spoke to Variety about the importance of feminism, female directors and her thoughts on Greta Gerwig’s Best Director Oscar snub.

Clinton shared the rationale behind choosing a woman director behind the docuseries based on her life. “ I thought, No. 1, we need more women directors,” she told the entertainment outlet adding, “And No. 2, a woman director would have an understanding of some of the issues in a very real way that would translate to the screen.”

Later on in the interview, Clinton revealed that her favorite film from last year was Greta Gerwig’s silver screen adaptation of “Little Women.” She believed that Gerwig should have been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director saying, “I really thought she deserved it because I thought it was beautifully done. And the way that it was constructed, made the best use of the book.”

The former first lady also looked back on how she became a second wave feminist saying that it was “expected.” Clinton said that she couldn’t wrap her head around why feminism is surrounded by controversy.

Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum settle shared custody of daughter Everly

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan seem to be amicable after the former married couple has reached a child custody agreement of their 6-year-old daughter Everly.

The two were both declared legally single back in November last year and have agreed to share 50/50 custody of their kid according to a report from People. Tatum and Dewan also came to the agreement that they will not be including Everly in social media posts that are made for profit without prior approval from each other.

Dewan and Tatum both announced their split back in 2018. The two had been married for almost nine years at that point but later on, filed for divorce in October that year. They cited irreconcilable differences as the reason

Following a Los Angeles judge’s decision to declare the two single, a source speaking to People last year said that Dewan is “very relieved to have closed that chapter.”

“Now she can just focus on the future,” the insider continued.

Dewan claimed in an interview last year that she was “blindsided” during her painful split with the Magic Mike star. Now, she has completely moved on as she is carrying a child with her boyfriend Steve Kazee.

Meanwhile, Tatum recently reconciled with his girlfriend Jessie J after the two took a break from their relationship in December last year. Tatum and Jessie even made their relationship red-carpet official at the Grammys on Sunday. The pair were spotted together in California before multiple news outlets confirmed that they were back together.

Jamie Foxx recalls racist experience at AAFCA Awards

Jamie Foxx’s compelling performance in the 2019 drama Just Mercy earned him another award. This time, from the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards

The 52-year-old actor took on the role of Walter McMillian, a wrongfully convicted death row inmate who was condemned in Alabama for a murder he didn’t commit. Foxx accepted the Best Supporting Actor honor at the ceremony held in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

In his speech, the actor took the time to address the film’s main topic: racism. He expressed his hopes that the Warner Bros. drama changes the audience’s perception of “what a black man is.” See the film’s emotional trailer in the video linked below:

While on stage, he also shared his own experience with fame and racism. He recalled a time when used to do comedy in Chicago years back. The incident happened at a fancy hotel patronized by “a lot of white people.”

Wearing a hoodie, Foxx went on an elevator with female guests from the hotel who were obviously terrified of his presence.

“…when they saw me, they huddled into the corner. ‘Michelle, Michelle, get over here. Stacy, Stacy, get over here,’” he remembered the women saying as they tried to avoid him. “…one of the ladies had the courage to look past my hoodie and saw that it was me. She said, ‘It’s Jamie Foxx.’ Phew!”

While his comedic tone left the audience with a belly full of laughs, he made sure to point out that racism is alive and well in this day and age.

What you need to know about coronavirus and how to protect yourself

In the age where misinformation can so easily be promulgated via Facebook, Twitter or any number of other social media platforms, we have taken the opportunity to set some facts straight and write a bit about the corona virus.

The coronavirus comes from a large family of viruses. It is a type of influenza or SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). Low level symptoms include a common cold, however more dangerous results can result with severe respiratory problems. In China, cases of at least 82 deaths and multiple other infections have already been recorded.

As the Coronavirus is from a new strand, it does not match other known viruses. As such, we cannot be entirely certain about how it affects people either. In any case, if you happen to experience flu like symptoms, isolate yourself and contact health care professionals. Some companies such as RUPharma.com are selling Arbidol that is used to treat and prevent influenza.

Because Coronavirus is a viral infection, antibiotics which slow and destroy the growth of bacteria, cannot be used. Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections. As such, protecting yourself is very important. The old adage “prevention is the best medicine” resounds so clearly in this case.

It is believed that the virus itself originated in Wuhan where many cases of the disease outbreak occurred. Reports suggest that the virus started within Wuhan’s seafood and animal market. It has since been closed and fumigated given safety concerns. Currently, the city remains in lock down with residents trapped while China quarantines. Those who contracted the disease in other countries, often had ties back to China.

In response, countries from all around the world are closely monitoring the situation, particularly in airports where rigorous screenings are taking place in response to the outbreak. Beyond China, cases have been confirmed in America, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong and more.

Health officials are encouraging those to avoid unnecessary travel back to China. However following recent Chinese New Year celebrations, we are yet to see additional flow-on’s and see what ramifications have developed.

Infections can spread quickly so it is important to be prepared and take necessary precautions. Preventative measures can be undertaken similar to that of high flu season. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, thoroughly scrubbing all areas of your hands. This includes the palms, both front and back, and between the fingers. Additionally, hand sanitiser can be used. Regularly washing your hands will help protect you. As such, disinfect household items and other objects you may regularly use. This will also help to avoid any infections.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. This spreads diseases to open areas of your body where you are more susceptible to infection. Whenever you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose. Safely dispose of tissues and so forth as soon as possible. Wash your hand thoroughly straight after as soon as possible.

Avoid sick people. Avoiding close contact with anyone who has a fever or cough will be another preventative precaution.

Should you develop any symptoms, such as a fever, cough or have difficulty breathing, seek specialised medical care immediately. Isolating yourself and placing yourself in quarantine for at least two weeks may seem extreme, but that is exactly what some Australian private schools have done.

Avoid unnecessary travel. Public transport such as trains or buses can be a breading ground for disease. Travelling back to Hubei province where the virus originated is obviously asking for trouble. Minimise the personal contact you have with others as much as possible, avoiding those who exhibit symptoms.

Just as food and animals can catch disease, they can also transmit them too. You should never eat sick animals or animals that have died from disease. Avoid contact with live animals during such outbreaks. All meat products should be thoroughly cooked and properly handled. Proper food safety practise dictates that different chopping boards and knives be used for raw meats and cooked foods. Additionally, you should wash your hands after handling any raw and cooked produce.

Disease spreads more easily in wet environments. Be conscious about your working environment and disinfect surfaces when and where possible. Other practical considerations may include removing wet clothing after work or separating work clothes from home. In all aspects, use common knowledge to practice basic hygiene principles.

Australian GPs have been advised to wear face masks when meeting suspected patients. As such, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you decided to wear one too. Despite such suggestions, reports have also indicated that surgical masks are not as effective as you’d typically think. Some websites started selling anti virus masks like this one.

Surgical masks are used by surgeons to protect their patients from mouth-bourn germs. These masks are normally worn loosely around the mouth with gaps between the cheeks and edges of the mouth where air can still easily leak in. In short, it may limit your exposure, but it does not fully protect you from this air-borne virus. Isolation, as much as possible, such as avoiding large gatherings will largely do that.

To best protect yourself, N95 respirators or similar masks are most effective preventing most of the small particles from entering the nose or mouth area. However N95 respirators also make it harder for users to breath and long sustained use may be a challenge.

Carey Mulligan wants Oscar voters to prove they’ve seen the films

Actress Carey Mulligan has shifted her career in favor of collaborating with female filmmakers. The conscious decision led her to projects like Suffragette’s Sarah Gavron and Dee Rees’ Mudbound in recent years. Her latest film is “Promising Young Woman” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last Saturday. The gripping thriller helmed by Emerald Fennell follows a female lead seeking revenge for the trauma she experienced at the hands of her abuser.

“Reading it for the first time, sort of made me nervous in a really good way, in a way that makes me excited to be part of something,” she said about the film — also written by Fennell — in a sit-down with Variety Studio.

Promising Young Woman marks Fennell’s directorial debut for a feature film. She previously served as the showrunner for BBC America’s season two of “Killing Eve.”

Like many cinephiles who question this year’s Oscar nominations, Mulligan raised a concern about the Academy Awards’ lack of gender diversity.

“I don’t think you can watch those films and not think they deserve recognition,” the actress said. “I think they need to be watched. I wonder if the system works in terms of getting sent 100 screeners. Maybe you shouldn’t be allowed to vote unless you can prove you’ve seen every single one. There should be a test. The films that did get left out are indisputably brilliant.”

This year’s Oscars gave the biggest snubs to female-centric films including Hustlers, The Farewell and Little Women. All of which, have been noted by the actress.

Mulligan further explained, “I feel like the fact that they are getting made is progress. But it’s all baby steps, she added.

Elsa Pataky has no regrets about her matching tattoo with Miley Cyrus

Elsa Pataky — the wife of Chris Hemsworth — doesn’t mind at all that she shares a matching tattoo with singer Miley Cyrus. Despite the highly-publicized divorce that Cyrus filed against her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, Pataky still remembers her bond with the singer fondly.

The Fast Five actress and the “Wrecking Ball” singer got matching ink back in 2016. Pataky looked back at the experience she shared in an interview with Vogue Australia for its February edition.

“I don’t regret any of them, they’re symbols and I love having them and it reminds me of those moments,” she said about the matter. The tattoos are small scribbles of ocean waves in black ink.

In the Vogue Australia interview, Pataky opted not to share details about Cyrus and her brother-in-law’s high-profile breakup. But she did have something to say about it to reporters back in November according to People. She shared that Hemsworth was left feeling “discouraged” after the split — a considerable reaction after Cyrus quickly found love in Kaitlynn Carter. But the pair was also involved in a high-profile breakup after the singer dumped the reality star and soon started dating Cody Simpson.

“My brother in law, well, after a relationship where he dedicated 10 years, he’s discouraged … but he’s taking it well,” Pataky previously said. “He’s a strong guy and he deserves the best. I think he deserves much more.”

“Family is always there to protect you. He and his brother are so close and he’s really been there for him to give him the strength he needs,” she added.
