Live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid casts Awkwafina as Scuttle

A fresh new take on one of the beloved characters from the original 1989 animated Disney classic is expected to hit the big screen.

Variety reports that Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina has signed on to the cast of The Little Mermaid remake. The rapper and actress will lend her voice to Disney’s live-action adaptation as Scuttle the seagull.

Alongside her is Wonder’s Jacob Tremblay who will reportedly play flounder the fish. News of the castings surfaced in a Tweet from journalist Kris Tapley who also reported Melissa McCarthy’s possible role as Ursula. The journalist wrote on Twitter:

“With the McCarthy news in, I’ve also heard Jacob Tremblay for Flounder and Awkwafina for Scuttle. #TheLittleMermaid”

https://twitter.com/kristapley/status/1144764003337551873

Disney has not confirmed reports as of this writing.

Director Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) is set to helm the live-action Litte Mermaid film. It will feature songs from the original soundtrack together with new music from original composer Alan Menken (Aladdin) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana). Miranda is also amongst the film’s producers with Marshall, John DeLuca, and Marc Platt. Scriptwriters are reportedly David Magee and Jane Goldman.

Disney has been remaking their animated classics into live-action adaptation in the last few years. While some features diversions from the original films, others stay true to the source material. Notable remakes include Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Maleficent which will get its own sequel premiering in October this year.

The success of Disney’s live-action remakes isn’t slowing down. The success of Aladdin raked in over $800 million in the international box office. This month, The Lion King is predicted to be a box-office hit as well.

Smart weddings: Incredible ways to save money on your wedding day

“My goal is that every couple, even those on a limited budget, have an elegant wedding day to remember.” –Polly Clements

Weddings are notoriously expensive.

More often than not, they tend to eat up your budget and if you are not entirely careful, it can potentially balloon your expenses. However, this does not necessarily have to be the case as you can always have your dream, elegant wedding without spending too much.

The key here is to know what your needs and wants are. Remember to keep your needs at the forefront of your mind and to only spend for you wants should you have a little room for more in your budget. Do not indiscriminately buy things here and there or avail of offers arbitrarily just because you think you might need them at your wedding.

Take note, you might have saved up on an affordable wedding venue, but it would all be for naught if you spent most of your budget on things you could have potentially saved up on. In any case, if you wish to save up on your wedding day, here are some of the indispensable and excellent tips:

  1. Avoid getting married on a Saturday

For most couples, tying the knot on a Saturday gives their guests the avenue of being physically there for their wedding day. Any other day apart from the ones slated on a weekend might require them to take off some time from work which may make them hesitant to come.

Choosing to get married on a day apart from Sunday would immediately reduce the overall cost of your wedding—you might just be surprised at how much cheaper you would end up paying.

  1. Ditch the high season

While there are not any “off months” for weddings really, there are some months where weddings are held more times in one day than the rest of the year. You might want to avoid getting married on these months as the prices of your vendors, venues and photographers can easily skyrocket.

If you wish to save up, choose those off peak months and you will get relatively cheaper and lower price tags.

  1. Avoid venues with vendor exclusivity clauses

Some venues are notorious for having an incredibly cheap rate with the concession being you having to do business with their vendors solely and exclusively. More often than not, this would result to a much pricier bill than it would have been had you booked third-party vendors.

Being forced to work with a specific vendor is limiting in the options of food, drink and style that you want want at your wedding. Moreover, it nullifies your ability to negotiate and haggle.

make sure you check this before booking a ‘cheap’ venue so that you know you still have the flexibility to save and have the wedding that you always wanted.

  1. Go green and go paperless for wedding day invites

Instead of opting for the classic approach of sending wedding paper invitations, go for the contemporary alternative by sending your guests a digital invite.

You can be as creative as you wish and send them a video cordially inviting them to witness your transition from singles to a couple. Incidentally, ensure that your guests RSVP online so that you would be able to have a head count early on.

However, if you really wish to send invitations the old fashioned way, at least send your guests a “Save the Date” invite.

  1. Minimize table decorations

Table decorations are great and they make your venue all the more sophisticated and beautiful.

However, tall ones may photograph nicely but are a pain for your guests as they usually have to crane their necks just to see what is going on. Most people cannot see over them and they would generally be obstructing the view.

Not to mention these can be expensive as well. Keep your table decorations to a bare minimum and you will be surprised at just how much you can save.

Mandy Moore talks about meeting her husband online

One of the most common ways for couples to meet is online; it appears that this is no different for celebrities. Mandy Moore has recently shared her thoughts on romances that begin online.

The 34 year old actress got married back in November to none other than singer-songwriter Taylor Goldsmith. What many people don’t realize is that the pair met over Instagram after Moore posted a photo of Goldsmith’s album cover in 2015.

Although the pair began their relationship online, the actress admits that back then, she never would have guessed that’s how she would find love. Moore claims that “if someone would have told me three years ago, ‘That’s your future husband, and you’re going to meet him through Instagram,’ I would have thought that they were absolutely bonkers.”

The star went on to say that “It proves that you have to stay open-minded because you just never know.”

The concept of finding love online is becoming more and more popular, with Moore agreeing that “We have a modern kind of love story,”

The ‘This Is Us’ star insists that “We shouldn’t have any judgment about what helps people find one another,” the 34 year old goes on to say that “We live in such a crazy, exhausting world, I think it’s perfectly logical that this is how we connect with each other”.

The actress may have initially found it bizarre that she met her now husband online, but she also acknowledges “It’s how we all communicate now anyway, so it doesn’t feel weird to me that it’s a way you can find a relationship that will really last.”

Despite finding a long term partner on Instagram the actress sees a big benefit in taking time away from the internet “Sometimes we need to just get off the clock and the grind of looking at our phones and feeling like we have to be tethered to the world around us,” she goes on to explain how “When I can put down the phone and take a deep breath, it feeds me.”

The actress also talks about how she has changed as she has got older “I think I have the opposite of FOMO! With age, comes the wisdom that you’re not really missing out on anything.”

TV Academy: no Governors Award for the 2019 Emmys

For the first time in 25 years, the Television Academy has opted out of handing a Governors Award for this year’s Emmys.

Every year, the TV Academy’s Board of Governors can either hand out one Governors Award or skip it altogether. This is only the third time in Emmy history since establishing the award in 1978, that the award won’t be given out this year. The first to instances of skipping out the award was back in 1993 and 1994. The award’s first recipient was William S. Paley who founded the television network CBS. Last year, it was awarded to the Star Trek franchise.

Variety reports that the award will not be handed out this year as no recipient was recommended by the nominating committee to the Board of Governors. The TV academy did not mention why no candidate did not reach the recommendation level for this year.

Emmy’s rules state that the award’s entries are “made by the Board of Governors, the Governors Awards nominating committee or individuals, who may suggest recipients in a letter to the Television Academy chairperson.” As for the qualifications for the awards says it is given to “an individual, company, organization or project for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences or management of television which is either of an accumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to go beyond the scope of the Emmy Awards presented in the categories and areas of achievement.”

Aside from the Governors Award, this year’s Emmys might have one more missing, a host. Variety previously reported that the awards show might not feature a host for this year.

Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon lands film adaptation

Another spine-chilling Stephen King novel will be brought to the big screen.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, one of King’s classics published in 1999, will have a film adaptation from the producers of ‘It’ (2017). The adaptation is long overdue as the late director George A. Romero was supposed to helm the film back in 2005. Now, Romero’s former wife Chris Romero has pushed for its production.

The teams behind It–Vertigo films represented by Roy Lee and Jon Berg and Origin Story represented by Ryan Silbert–are lined up to produce. News of the adaptation broke prior to the release of Its’ highly anticipated chapter two. The original 2017 film is recorded as the highest-grossing horror movie of all time which followed 1990 miniseries aired on ABC.

King’s 1999 novel follows the story of Trisha McFarland who is lost in the woods after seeking solitude from her arguing mother and brother. She is a nine-year-old girl with a fear of the dark who is left trying to find her way out of the woods for nine days. Her terrifying predicament stems from the lack of food, water, and exhaustion which causes her to hallucinate.

Romero penned a script for the adaptation of the psychological horror but it was later shelved according to One Room with A View. Now, the search is on for a writer who will take on the new script, as per The Hollywood reporter. Andrew Childs will act as executive producer to the project.

King has addressed the big news in a statement to THR on Wednesday saying, “I’m thrilled that my book is being brought to the screen, and that George’s company is involved. Chris has worked long and hard to make this project happen,”

Why you should take private dance lessons if you want to dance

Many people will often avoid the opportunities to dance due to embarrassment or a failure to understand the enjoyment that comes from it. Taking private dance lessons allows the individual to learn how to in a closed environment away from any potential embarrassment. Learning in a private space will allow the individual to develop the required skills before doing so in public.

Dancing in general is a great way to learn a new skill whilst gaining general wellbeing in the process. It’s also a skill that will regularly come in good use at parties and other events. Whilst it is unlikely that anyone at any stage will partake in a full routine, learning how to will mean that when the music does come one, you will be able to move in time.

Taking private lessons has benefits beyond that of just the movement required and can improve overall health from both a physical and mental standpoint. Not only is it fun, but dancing has great health benefits too! So why should anyone take lessons?

Confidence

Many people think that they may look silly when they dance due to a lack of coordination, social constructs or just because they don’t know how to. Taking lessons will help to reduce the embarrassment and improve confidence.

The individual taking the lessons will learn how to move properly on the floor, gain a sense of coordination and start to worry less about how they look and more about how it feels. Dancing is a great way to let go and just be yourself.

Made for You

Having the class made for the individual is a great way to ensure enjoyment. Once the goals have been identified by the instructor, the program can suit the individual perfectly and target their weaknesses whilst also using their strengths to their advantage.

Additionally, the lessons and focus points will change and adapt according to the progress made so that there is never a moment of too much repetition. This makes dancing fun and aids in development so that those who take the class can dominate the rumba or the cha-cha, whatever the situation.

Exercise

Dancing is a great way to exercise in a relaxed environment. It can often be a mental struggle to go out for that run or get to the gym after work but dancing can make exercise fun. It uses the whole body so that nothing is missing out on the great workout.

Dancing involves both strength and cardio exercise and therefore is a great all round workout. Even taking private dance lessons, doing it with a friend (or a couple of friends) can be a great idea so that everyone gets their weekly exercise in.

Fast Progress

Because the lessons are one on one or at least with a smaller group, the teacher can put more time into each individual. As touched on before, the program will be tailored to each member of the class (however few) and therefore progress will be fast tracked.

Even better, any questions that the individual has with any part of the routine can be brought up and worked on for any length of time until it is right. This ensures that you are getting the most out of the lesson and develop into the best dancer possible, regardless of the beginning level.

Relieve the Stress

One of the great benefits of dancing is that private dance lessons will help to relieve the stress that has built up at work. Focussing on something new that is fun will take the mind off all of the stress from work and family and allow the individual to just focus on the task at hand.

Because it is such a good workout as well, the brain releases endorphins and this will only help to make you feel better as the dancing continues. Doing a private lesson with friends is also great because it further takes the mind off any stresses as all of the focus is on learning the routine and having fun.

No Distractions

It can be hard learning to dance and often requires a lot of focus. Having a large group of people in the room can be distracting, especially if they are often talking. Taking private lessons allows those in the class to just focus on the routine and feel the music as they move.

It also gets rid of the embarrassment aspect which at times can be a distraction as people worry about what others in the class might think of them. Ultimately, no distractions allows those in the class to just focus on themselves and perfect the routine meaning that they become better dancers, faster.

5 The most popular TV channels in Australia

Australia was an early and enthusiastic adopter of television technology when it first began experimentally in the late 20’s and early 30’s. It wasn’t until September 1956 that the first mainstream broadcast on a channel called TCN-9 introduced Australian families to their new primary source of entertainment and information. Advertising executive Bruce Gyngell famously introduced this first broadcast saying, “Good evening, and welcome to television,”.

In the decades since that historic day in Australian media, television has made successive technological leaps from colour all the way to the digital broadcast we enjoy today. Sports broadcasting is of particular importance to the history of Australian television, with many people fondly remembering childhood memories of being crowded around a TV, cheering on their footy team.

Australia’s penchant for sarcasm and ‘walks the line’ crude humour has also closely followed the development of our nations’ TV identity. Iconic comedy programs such as Fast Forward, The Late Show, Hey Hey It’s Saturday and Kath & Kim have cemented Australian cultural stereotypes in our signature, self-deprecating fashion.

In many ways, Australia’s television media has followed the example set by the United States as well as the United Kingdom, with the shared language and Anglo-Saxon cultural ties leading to many programs being shared across borders. Just like the rest of the world, Australia largely consumes American-made programming alongside local programming.

In this article, we’ll take a brief look at the 5 most popular TV channels in Australia.

Here are 5 the most watched TV channels and shows in Australia:

1. Channel 9

Channel 9 (the grandchild of the aforementioned TCN-9), is arguably the leader of the pack when it comes to commercial Australian TV, historically boasting the highest-ratings amongst the big 3 free-to-air broadcasters (Channel 9, Channel 10 and Channel 7). It’s logo is a number nine with 9 dots next to it, although this has been altered over the years.

The broadcaster is the natural rival of Channel 7 and both networks have gotten ahead and fallen behind one another over the decades. Channel 9 dominates news and current affairs, boasting the nation’s most popular breakfast TV show Today. Channel 9 is also watched for all NRL live steaming.

Channel 9 is also home to two of Australia’s most iconic investigative news programs, 60 Minutes and A Current Affair. Recently, the network has topped ratings with its reality TV shows like Married at First Site and The Block, or Millionaire Hot Seat.

2. Channel 7

While Channel 9 has been the big dog for a long time, since 2007 Channel 7 has retained the title of highest rated TV network in Australia. 7 has slowly but surely been chipping away at 9’s dominance over the last 10 or so years with its Sunrise breakfast program beating Today in viewership in 2018. Channel 7 can also boast possessing the most popular secondary channel in Australia, 7Mate.

It also possesses broadcasting rights to the 2nd highest rated show of 2018, My Kitchen Rules as well as the 4th highest, The Good Doctor. Channel 7’s House Rules comes in as the 9th highest rating regular program on Australians screens last year. Pretty popular are Better Homes and Gardens on the weekends, or Border Security, Australia’s Got Talent and Highway Patrol.

Channel 7 is also a major sports broadcaster, with particular emphasis on AFL and Cricket. 7 was also the primary Australian broadcaster of the Sydney 2000 Olympic games, which attracted a television audience of over 6.5 million at the time. 7 is also locked in as Australia’s Olympic broadcaster until 2020. Until a deal was negotiated with other networks back in 2001, Channel 7 was the exclusive broadcaster of AFL games for 45 years.

3. Channel 10

Channel Ten - Australian Idol

Beginning in Melbourne under the name ATV-O in August 1964, Channel 10 has gone from strength to strength over the decades to become a major player in the Australian broadcasting mix. While the network struggled to make ends meet and was predicted to fail several times in its early days, the company bounced back with ratings hits like Young Talent Time (which helped launched the careers of Australian celebrities like Dannii Minogue) and Number 96.

It was really in 2001 where the modern Channel 10 was born with the debut of Australian Big Brother and reality TV based down under. Australian Idol (following the format of American Idol) was also hugely popular until it ended in 2009.

In terms of sport, Channel 10 maintains the rights to broadcast Wallabies games and the Melbourne Cup Carnival as well as several motorsports like Formula One and MotoGP. The other popular shows are Masterchef, or Bondi Rescue.

4. ABC Television

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC for short) is the primary publicly funded media organisation in Australia and ABC Television is the official name for its broadcasting arm. The ABC maintains 4 non-commercial TV channels with purpose of providing content of sincere value to the community as well as providing important news updates and emergency information.

The network can trace its origin back to the 1953 federal Television Act which set out the rules for how commercial broadcasters as well as public broadcasters would operate, with Prime Minister Robert Menzies personally inaugurating the first broadcast on the 5th of November 1956. Most popular shows are Q&A, Media Watch, Four Corners, Catalyst, Australian Story.

5. SBS

The Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) operates TV and radio broadcasting around Australia and is hybrid-funded, with 80% of its capital coming from the Government. The SBS originated following World War 2 as a means of providing broadcasting for the ethnic groups flooding into Australia in the post-war period.

The SBS was formally created in 1978 with much of the early content being imported from other countries and given English subtitles. SBS is fondly remembered by many as the Australian network that rebroadcast South Park to Australian audiences.

Some of the SBS’s most successful programs include Dateline, The Feed, and Who Do You Think You Are. However, the SBS if most famously the channel many Australians switch to when the annual Eurovision Song Contest (started in 1983) is broadcast, due to the large number of European ethnic groups within the country.

6 recruiting strategies to make hiring a top growth hack for your business

Considering the evolution of the internet in recent years, it’s incredible to think that despite its advancement there is still a long way to go for it to change the method of employment and hiring.

At the moment, the current process follows the same old procedure:

  1. Create the job advertisement for your role
  2. Conduct interviews for potential candidates
  3. Contact the relevant references
  4. Consider your likely candidates for the role
  5. Make an offer
  6. Confirm the candidates position
  7. Hire the employee

These steps require time and resources, which means if you were to make the wrong decision about hiring, it could cost the company up to $50,000. As well as direct and indirect costs, when they leave you’ll have to go through the whole process of hiring someone new as well as having a domino effect on others in the workplace. Co-workers will feel frustrated from candidates that are inadequate to perform the role after the new candidate has been hired. This is likely to give your top talent a reason to leave which won’t be beneficial for the company.

This is why your hiring process should be reviewed and considered as a great way for your business to grow. But first, let’s look at what growth hacking is exactly.

Growth hacking

Growth hacking is like marketing on steroids where each of the elements that are considered in it are aligned to reach one specific goal: to grow your user base. The idea is to utilize the data that you receive to develop strategies quickly that can reach out to more of your audience. Its aim is to increase your overall audience for your product or service.

Think of growth hacking as a way to sift through your audience and find only candidates that are worthy of the role you’re advertising, but doing it efficiently. So, this is probably something that you’re looking to and here are strategies in place to help reach your goals.

Poaching talent from rivals

This is known as ‘head hunting’ or ‘recruiting’ and are common terms used when you ‘steal’ talented employees from other employers. It involves the process going out and sourcing some talented individuals who are already in a job and approach them.

The internet makes this even easier with the use of LinkedIn. This social network for professionals has almost 500,000 members and most are open to hearing from a recruiter, just search for candidates who match your specifications and message them.

You could even consider hiring international employees who could fill the knowledge gap in your company. Just ensure the onboarding process is smooth if you do poach them. Consider arranging aspects such as accommodation, travel arrangements, UK visa applications and others.

Consider a recruiting agency

As this is a quick process and not everyone has lots of time, sometimes handling interviews and hiring team members is much more time consuming than you think, you could prioritise your time elsewhere. Therefore if you have the budget for it, handing the recruitment process to someone else is much easier and much less time-consuming.

Use recruiting software

Another method that you could use alternative to hiring a recruiter is using recruiting software. It’s also beneficial if you wish to keep hiring strictly internally. It’s extremely easy to use and less time-consuming which means the applications will come to you rather than the other way around.

You can add new jobs to your website easily, post on multiple job boards and find all social profiles automatically which makes it a far more efficient process.

Ask for references and portfolio’s in your job advertisement

During the recruiting process, you need to act fast as it’s likely the candidate may have quite a few roles on the table but it also means you use up less time. Asking for candidates to provide references and portfolio’s beforehand can go a long way to saving you time and resources. Instead of waiting until after the face-to-face interviews to ask for references and work samples, you should ask for them up front in the job advertisement. You will be able to see if they actually have the skills you require first.

Make a wish list

You need to create a list before you start interviewing anyone on all the necessary, must have, skills and qualities that your employees MUST have.

This list will ensure you hire someone that is suited to the job and the culture of the workplace. It’ll include all the unwritten rules needed to be followed in order to work well in your business including behaviour you expect from your employees to the qualities needed for a head leadership team to be successful.

So overall employing someone who fits in well will decrease the overall rate of employee turnover. Stick to the list that you’ve created regardless of how the potential employee looks on their CV. If you discover something that you don’t like about the person during their interview, move on to the next candidate.

Their first day

For a new candidate, it’s important that they’re able to feel comfortable when they first arrive. This is why you should set a plan in place for their first day as a candidate may reconsider their choice if they turn up without anything to do. Most candidates tend to leave their old jobs as they feel as though they’ll gain something better from the new one so ensure that the grass is greener on the other side for them.

In order to stop your new employee walking back to their old jobs your training plan should have these key elements:

  • Job description.
  • Corporate goals.
  • Personal development milestones.
  • Check-in dates.

If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail, planning is key when managing new employees.
