Margot Robbie on choosing between Birds of Prey and Gotham City Sirens

We’re just a week away from the world premiere of Margot Robbie’s highly-anticipated film, Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. It will hit theatres this February 7.

Hardcore DC fans have probably heard that the Aussie actress had the option to bring Birds of Prey on the big screen or, another all-female DC group — Gotham City Sirens. As we all know, she ultimately chose to do a film based on the former. Speaking to Nerdist, Robbie discussed the reason behind choosing Birds of Prey over Gotham City Sirens.

Robbie explained that it all started when she dove her nose into Birds of Prey.

“Whilst I was researching the character I started to read Birds of Prey and first I fell in love with Huntress, and I started looking into all of that.”

It was then when she realized that there are under-the-radar DC heroines that could really pack a punch. And they don’t get the recognition they deserve. So the actress asked herself, “So what if we had a platform for fans to get to know and fall in love with some of these other amazing women?”

She then pointed out that only three female DC characters share the spotlight in Gotham City Sirens — Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman. These characters have been brought to life on the big and small screen and Robbie argued that it was high time to welcome a new all-female force to be reckoned with.

“…I thought that [Birds of Prey] might be the perfect platform to introduce some female characters who might really have some legs in the DC Universe.”
