James Gunn on snubbing Jared Leto’s Joker for Suicide Squad 2

When James Gunn announced the cast members for his upcoming Suicide Squad remake, Jared Leto was nowhere to be found in the lineup.

It seemed that the DC Extended Universe has completely snubbed the actor’s take on the Clown Prince of Crime. Initially, there were reports that claimed Leto’s Joker will have its own standalone film. But this was followed by the news that the actor will be sharing the big screen with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Whatever initial plans Warner Bros. had for the character is currently in limbo. Especially now that Robbie’s standalone Harley Quinn film has completely diverted from the character.

Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Leto definitely did not receive the disregard for his take on the character well. And who can blame him? Many of his scenes from the 2016 Suicide Squad film was reportedly left on the cutting room floor. Talks about having his own film presumably fell apart and now Joaquin Phoenix has completely dominated as this generation’s Joker. Not only that, while Robbie will be reprising her role as Harley in the next Suicide Squad movie director James Gunn is saying that they don’t really need him in it. Talk about rubbing salt into the wound?

As per Cinemablend here’s what the director had to say about doing without Leto’s Joker:

“No one but me and a few others know all the characters in the movie, but if the Joker isn’t in the film, I don’t think it would be strange as he isn’t a part of the Suicide Squad in the comics.”
