Greta Gerwig signs on to Margot Robbie’s Barbie adaptation

Margot Robbie’s on-screen Barbie adaptation is coming together with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach signing on to the project as co-writers.

The Warner Bros-backed movie will have Robbie as the star and producer. Gerwig is also circling to direct the film about the iconic doll yet no official announcements have been made.

As it goes in the rumor mill, Warner Bros. has been eyeing the Gerwig-Baumbach duo to co-write the film since it closed a deal with Mattel Films for distribution rights. The film is set for a January 2020 debut.

The project will be under Robbie’s banner, LuckyChap alongside her husband Tom Ackerley of LuckyChap Entertainment and Robbie Brenner of Mattel also producing. Joining the list of producers are Josey McNamara and Ynon Kreiz.

Gerwig is recognized for her work in Lady Bird starring Ronan. The film earned the actress and writer a Spirit Award for best screenplay.

Currently, Gerwig is busy with her forthcoming Little Women film adaptation for Sony. It is set to star acclaimed actresses Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, and Emma Watson. The film is believed to be a major contender for the 2019 award season. On the other hand, Baumbach is hard at work with an untitled film starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson for Netflix.

As for Robbie, the actress is busy promoting her film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, the Quentin Tarantino-helmed Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood. Fans are excited to see how the iconic Mattel doll will be given a fresh new spin by Robbie, who arguably looks like a real-life barbie herself.
