Game of Thrones creators call Starbucks cup mistake “an embarrassment”

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have finally broken their silence about the Starbucks cup snafu from Game of Thrones’ 8th and final season.

In a recent interview, the GOT creators pass the coffee cup fiasco as an honest mistake and revealed that although they were initially embarrassed, they’re able to laugh it off now. Speaking to Japanese network Star Channel, Benioff said:
“I think in Persian rugs it’s a tradition that you make a little mistake when you’re making the rug because only God can do anything perfectly, so for us, I guess that was just our [mistake].”

Weiss even managed to quip about the cup’s cameo on the 4th episode of the season “The Last of the Starks.”

“That’s why I put the coffee cup there… a conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection,” he said.

Benioff attributes the blunder to everyone’s focus on Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in the scene, making them miss that small but unmissable misstep.

The notorious coffee cup swept social media and eventually, headlines on online outlets. And once the whole situation caught their attention, Benioff says they initially didn’t believe it.

“…it was kind of embarrassment because, ‘How did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?'”

Now, the pair says that they’ve learned to shrug it off and even laugh about it. But who’s coffee cup is it in the first place? According to actress Sophie Turner who plays Sansa Stark in the show, it was actually Harington’s. In an appearance on the talk show Conan, she explained that while she initially cast the blame on Clarke, she’s sure it was Harington’s saying that “ I don’t think Emilia would do that.”

As for the fate of the cup? It’s been digitally removed for future re-airings.
