Fox adapts Aussie series “A Moody Christmas”; Jay Baruchel to star

Australian television series “A Moody Christmas” is getting an American adaptation from Fox starring Jay Baruchel.

The “How to Train Your Dragon” star will play a lead role opposite Elizabeth Perkins and Denis Leary. Deadline reports that the half-hour holiday event series will air sometime in December. The single-camera sitcom will follow the Moody family.

In the series, three Moody siblings reunite with their family for the holiday season. Each of the siblings brings their own complications to the table as they gather with extended family members. Leary will star as patriarch Sean Sr. and Perkins will star as his wife Ann.

Baruchel stars as Sean Jr, the eldest Moody sibling still living under their parents’ roof. Sean Jr still sleeps in his own room as he dreams up a better life despite being a “screw-up.” He tries to come up with an insane scheme to quickly get rich and leave his job working as a maintenance guy at a local hockey rink.

Chelsea Frei recently joined the cast as Sean Jr’s sister Bridget Moody, the overachiever of the three siblings.

Producers for the comedy show include CBS TV Studios and Fox Entertainment. Fox plans to run the series as an ongoing event franchise featuring multiple installments with the same main cast. The creators of the original Australian series Trent O’Donnell and Phil Lloyd will executive produce the show representing Jungleboys FTV Pty Limited.

Baruchel is known for starring on the FXX show “Man Seeking Woman” which currently has three seasons. His latest big-screen project was “The Kindness of Strangers.”
