Uh-oh. It looks like the merch with a mouth might be doing without his signature R-rated antics for the third installment of the Deadpool franchise.
Deadpool 2 director David Leitch discussed the possibility of the third film not necessarily being R-rated. As Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox, the production banner behind the Deadpool franchise, Leitch suggests working with a lower-age rating to stay on-brand with Disney. Speaking to Yahoo! Movies the director says, “It’s rated R so that’s not necessarily the [MCU] brand but he doesn’t necessarily need to be R and [Disney] don’t necessarily need to only make PG-13 movies. I think we’ll find a happy ground.”
Deadpool is arguably unlike any other superhero audiences have seen on the big screen and that’s mostly because of its R-rating. It’s hard to imagine Wayde Wilson played by the charming Ryan Reynolds without his signature gore, cussing and borderline offensive insults. Disney’s CEO Bob Iger has previously expressed that Deadpool films should continue to be R-rated as concerns were raised about the franchise being acquired by the family-centric studio. Marvel’s Kevin Feige also agreed with the sentiment saying that the studio won’t be changing Deadpool.
Reports say that Feige’s statement would probably mean that the mercenary will not be appearing from the MCU but let’s not rule out a Deadpool appearance. The franchise’s PG-13 Christmas special, Once Upon a Deadpool showed fans that the merch can make it with toned-down violence and language. Deadpool could take a similar route to enter the MCU.
