After Netflix gained notoriety with the Oscar-nominated Best Picture Roma, Apple wants to be a part of the action.
The tech giant is repositioning itself as a provider of entertainment with its forthcoming streaming service, Apple TV+. Now, it looks like the tech giant is ready to go head-to-head with its competitor, Netflix.
The New York Post reports that Apple will release six films worthy of Academy Award attention. The move follows this year’s defining event at the 2019 Oscars where Netflix’s Roma garnered multiple nominations and awards. The Alfonso Cuarón film became one of the most celebrated in the awards ceremony with 10 nominations and 3 wins.
The landmark event legitimized the films streamed online alongside those that are traditionally released in theaters. It’s a sign that members of the prestigious awards ceremonies are embracing the digital advancements in the industry.
With Roma’s successful release, Netflix plans to continue their Oscars race with this year’s The Irishman by Martin Scorsese. But the streaming giant might be in serious competition against Apple.
Apple’s reported awards-contending flicks are expected to launch this fall. The company’s streaming service will feature low-to-mid-budget films that are high in quality. This is a separate endeavor from the company’s partnership with indie powerhouse, A24.
Apple is reportedly working with notable creators in the film industry. The names include J.J. Abrams, M. Night Shyamalan, Taika Waititi, Damien Chazelle and more.
Netflix isn’t the only streaming service that Apple needs to worry about. It’s worth mentioning that the upcoming Disney Plus has numerous films in its arsenal. However, the tech company has a pretty good idea of where to start.
