Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is standing up to support the Duchess of Sussex after she disclosed that the stress from all the media attention and criticism is getting to her.
Ocasio-Cortez defended Meghan Markle when the Duchess opened up about the difficulties of fame during a television interview.
The New York congresswoman tweeted a clip from the upcoming documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey last Friday wherein Markle confessed to journalist Tom Bradby that all the fame and attention has taken its toll on her. Ocasio-Cortez quoted Markle on her tweet,
“Thank you for asking, bc not many people have asked if I’m ok.”
Ocasio-Cortez stated that she related to what the Duchess is experiencing and added,
“Sudden prominence is a very dehumanizing experience. There’s a part of your life that you lose, & it later dawns on you that you’ll never get it back.”
The congresswoman’s tweet was greatly commended on social media, garnering over 184,100 likes and 21,400 retweets at the time of posting this article.
Markle shared the vulnerabilities that comes with her current lifestyle, “I would say, look, any woman, especially when they are pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging, and then when you have a newborn, you know…and especially as a woman, it’s really, it’s a lot,”
The Duchess also appreciated Bradby for asking her about her well-being, “Thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m OK,” Markle said, “But it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
When the journalist asked her if she was truly struggling at the moment, Markle said yes.
Markle and Prince Harry took legal action earlier this month against a British publication after releaseing a private letter that the Duchess wrote to Thomas Markle, the Meghan’s estranged father. Harry stated that he greatly feared that his wife would share the same fate as his mother, the late Princess Diana who was harassed by the paparazzi before her untimely death back in 1997 in a car accident.
Prince Harry shared that he has already seen what can happen to a person that he loves when they are commoditized to the extent of which they are not treated as a person anymore.
“I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces,” he added.
Harry & Meghan: An African Journey will air tonight (October 20th) on the U.K. network ITV and Wednesday on ABC.
