Taylor Swift has learned her lesson from her past relationships.

Before she dated British actor Joe Alwyn, Taylor Swift’s love life has made headlines after headlines in the media. From her relationships with Joe Jonas, Harry Styles to Tom Hiddleston, the star has not been a stranger to highly-publicized romances.

Now, Swift shared that she has put her guard up to protect her relationship with Alwyn from the public eye. The couple is rarely seen together publicly and has never made red carpet appearances together. And unlike usual couples who express their love on social media, the pair have opted out of doing the same.

Speaking to The Guardian, the “Calm Down” hitmaker explained why she and Alwyn prefer to keep their love life out of the spotlight.

“I’ve learned that if I [talk about my relationship], people think it’s up for discussion, and our relationship isn’t up for discussion,” the singer reflected. Swift and Alwyn have been together for three long years, which is a good sign that what they’re doing is definitely working.

“If you and I were having a glass of wine right now, we’d be talking about it — but it’s just that it goes out into the world. That’s where the boundary is, and that’s where my life has become manageable.”

Indeed, too much publicity can really hurt a relationship and we’ve seen that from the singer’s past rendezvous. Particularly with her infamous three-month-fling with Tom Hiddleston. The brief romance was covered from every possible angle, making headlines every week throughout its duration.
