Taika Waititi considers breast cancer storyline for Mighty Thor

Female superheroes are truly having a moment in Marvel right now. First, there was Brie Larson who smashed through the box office with Captain Marvel. Then there’s Scarlet Johansson’s stand-alone Black Widow film that’s slated for a 2020 release. And the best part is that there’s more to come.

One of the biggest news in Marvel is that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will be back for Thor: Love and Thunder. Not only that, she’ll be wielding Mjolnir as Might Thor, Thor’s female counterpart.

Avid Marvel fans are familiar with Jane’s comic book storyline that involves her battle with breast cancer. So will the film take a cue from the comics and portray this on the big screen? Taika Waititi has something to say about that.

At the press conference of his new film Jojo Rabbit over the weekend, the director considered the possibility of the storyline making it to the movie.

“I think that’s a really powerful part of the books. I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally I really love that storyline,” tells Variety. “But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen.”

The director doesn’t want anyone to keep their hopes up especially with the complicated process of filmmaking. “We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline. These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes,” he explained. “Like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.’”

The fourth installment of Marvel’s Thor slated is due to shoot early 2020 and is slated for a November 5, 2021 release.
