Priyanka Chopra calls out racism for Meghan Markle’s negative press

The Duchess of Sussex has been the subject of intense public scrutiny since her marriage into England’s royal family. Her friend Priyanka Chopra has spoken out in her defense saying it has something to do with racism.

The 36-year-old Quantico actress went on the record and shared her sentiments regarding Meghan’s bad publicity. In an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, Chopra was asked about what she thought of the negative media coverage that her friend has been receiving. She said: “I’ve seen that and it’s really unfortunate.”

“But if there’s anyone who can handle it, it’s her,” Chopra added. She went on to say, “Of course it has to do with racism, it’s an obvious reason. But the beauty of Meg is that she’s been herself through all of this.”

The actor went on to praise Markle saying that she has remained true to herself despite all the bad press.

“We spent hours speaking about the difference that influence and dialogue can make to the world before this whole thing happened, so what you see now is authentically her. She’s always been the girl wanting to move the needle,” the actress said.

Chopra’s friendship with Markle began when they were both aspiring actresses. The two met at the annual ELLE Women in Television dinner. Chopra has gone on to say about their friendship, “We bonded as actors. We just became friends, like two girls would.”

Markle has also shared glowing words for her friend during an interview with the Press Trust of India. The royal described Chopra as “unbelievable”, in a good way. “She has become a really good friend. ELLE Magazine in the U.S. hosted a dinner celebrating Women in TV, and we met that night — turns out that she really likes Suits.” Markle added.
