Natalie Portman on Jane Foster’s absence in Thor 3

Jane Foster’s absence in the third installment of Marvel Studios’ Thor franchise did not go unnoticed. How would it? She’s played by an acclaimed and high profile actress and she’s Thor’s love interest. On top of that, the sequel Thor: Dark World’s storyline basically revolves around Jane’s body getting hijacked by a cosmic being. So why the sudden disappearance in Thor: Ragnarok?

While Jane was briefly mentioned when Thor explained to Loki that their breakup was “mutual dumping”, the film didn’t offer much else. Now, Natalie Portman is offering an explanation as to why. Speaking to Cinemablend, the actress says Marvel Studios approached her to be in the fourth Thor installment.

“Obviously I wasn’t written into the third Thor because of where it took place. It wasn’t really on Earth and my character was on Earth. And then they came to me with the fourth idea and said, you know, ‘We have this idea, that was a storyline in some of the comics, where Jane becomes Lady Thor.’”

Looking to play anything other than Thor’s ladylove, Portman was definitely on board with the concept. The Oscar-winning actress shared her enthusiasm about the idea adding that she looks forward to working with Taika Waititi and Tessa Thompson. Not to mention, reuniting with Chris Hemsworth.

That’s right, she’s back in in a big way. Thor: Love and Thunder will be seeing Jane’s return. Not only will she be making her return to the Thor franchise, but she’ll also be wielding Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor.
