Tips on how to take care of your bed sheets

There is a variety of bed linens in the market today, namely different colours, patterns, fabrics and prices. Essentially, this should work in the best interest of the buyer, given that you have a wide range of products to choose from. However, one should also note that the piece of linen you select has its own way of care for it to last long. While there are some specific instructions on how to take care of specific types of linen, there are others that are common to all. This article will look at some common instructions on how to take care of your bed sheets.

Read and understand the accompanying instructions

Every type of bed sheet has its own instructions on how to care for it. When you buy, it should be your priority to read and understand these instructions. Should the washing water be hot, warm or cold? All will be listed right there.

One mistake that most buyers do is to throw away the care instructions the moment they unwrap the bed linen. Always keep the instructions for future reference. The instructions  show you not only how to wash, but also how to dry the linens. If you have many linens and fear that you will confuse the instructions, consider taping the instructions on a card. This will help you remind which instructions belong with which linen.

General guidelines for washing

If you don’t have the care instructions for your specific bedsheets, then you don’t have to worry. You can go the common way. Things like the temperature of the water, the type of soap to use or avoid and other common things can be done even in the absence of the guidelines.

In most cases, it is advisable to use less detergent when washing bed linens and to rinse thoroughly to remove the detergent residue that might have have become struck to the sheets while washing. Things like bleach can only help break down the fabric fibers of your sheets. This should be avoided at all means.

General drying guidelines

After washing, you also need to understand how to dry the sheets. Leaving the sheets out in the open with natural sunlight to dry sufficiently is the best practice. However, be careful not to over dry the bed linens, as this can intensify the wrinkles on the sheets. After removing the sheets from the dryer, fold them promptly. This will also to help reduce the wrinkles on the sheets, since leaving the sheet unfolded will only make the creases worse. Just in case the sheets have over dried already and have developed wrinkles, you can hand-press or iron the sheets to remove the wrinkles.

Wrinkles on your bed sheets can be very unappealing and reflect poorly on your domestic maintenance and decorative skills. By making sure that your sheets are folded immediately after they have dried, you will find that the quality of the linen fabric will be maintained for a longer period of time.

While many people would choose to ignore the best practices when washing and caring for their linens, one would just wonder why then you should buy such expensive, high-quality sheets? In order to get value for your money and years of use from your sheets, it is imperative that you learn how to take good care of them.

There are a wide variety of linen retailers throughout Australia, all of whom can provide the best advice as to how you can properly maintain the quality of your bed sheets. Even if you have lost the instructions of care or are unaware as to how to wash your linen, a reputable seller will help you get things done correctly.

The emergence of voice search

The app ecosystem has reaped extensive growth in its short life and it doesn’t appear to be slowing any time soon. As of the first quarter of 2018, there are approximately 3.8 million apps available for Android users. At the same time, the Apple app store shows a variety of 2 million apps. The number of downloads matches the pace at which new apps are added to the stores.

Statista reports that there were 178.1 billion mobile app downloads in 2017. This figure is anticipated to shoot to 258.2 billion downloads by the year 2022. This means that an individual user has and will have a broad variety of apps to choose from. Besides, an average smartphone user accesses no more than 40 apps in a month.

As an app owner, this should set your priorities straight. In that, your smartphone apps should boast features that will attract users to it. One such feature is voice search. In this regard, let’s dive into the facts that you should know about voice search.

Voice search is gaining increasing prominence

Recently, Google revealed that 20% of the searches on its mobile app have been voice-commanded. The number is set to swell as the path for the growth of voice search is fertile. Alex Lirtsman, the chief strategist of Ready Set Rocket, predicts the same.

Numerous studies and surveys exhibit the bright future of voice searches in general. Here are two statistics that confirm the revolution:

  • Gartner predicts that by 2020 approximately 30% of all the searches conducted will be by voice
  • Technavio states that the voice recognition market will swell to $601 million by the next year

The inclusion of the voice search feature in your existing or upcoming app is not all that you need to know though. Voice search in apps opens up new avenues and brings forth certain perks too. For instance, voice search will alter organic search patterns and will facilitate multitasking.

Voice search makes apps more user-friendly

As an app owner, one of your ideal clients would be a busy millennial crossing a road while using your app to navigate. Of course, such a client is ideal because they are utilising your product. Uses a voice search application helps retain clients because it is easier for such a user to use your app.

The fact of the matter is that smartphones are necessary evils that tend to be in our hands even as we cross a road. Naturally, voice search would make such things easier and safer, particularly if you’re operating a device while crossing a street.

In simple words, voice search makes apps user-friendly. An interesting survey reveals that 23% of people use voice search when using their phone while cooking. Likewise, 57% of the teens and 24% of the adults use the feature while they are out with friends. Moreover, 15% of the adults use voice search from their bathrooms.

Hence, voice search not only encourages folks to use an app but it also allows multi-tasking. Here are some further perks of using voice-search enabled apps:

  • Increased productivity: Voice search enables users to streamline operations, saving time and effort.
  • Safety improvement: Voice search is simple to use and doesn’t require much training, while allowing for an improvement in safety measures and procedures.
  • Faster: This pointer is a no-brainer. It takes longer to type than to speak.

If your app offers all these advantages by integrating voice search, it’s sure to attract many users and stand out from the rest of the competition. Plus, business owners can improve customer experience and witness increased sales by employing voice search in their e-commerce apps. Take Dominos – they’ve launched a voice-activated pizza order app that makes placing orders more efficient.

Voice search helps location-based businesses and SEO

If an app owner is looking to tap into local audiences, they can gain a lot by utilizing voice search. Most of the searches tend to be local, with people looking for services or businesses near them. Therefore, a voice-enabled app is excellent for location-based businesses.

That said, voice search implicates search engine optimization (SEO). What’s known for sure is that people are looking for faster and better results. This is one of the leading reasons why people use voice search when exploring answers.

This factor impacts an app’s ranking as well. To rank an app higher on the search engine results pages (SERPs), an app developer should pay attention to their SEO strategies. In this regard, mobile app owners need to change their keyword strategy.

The focus should shift to customer-first marketing to top the voice-enabled world. It’s easier to understand this by comprehending that voice commanders give instructions using long phrases. Long-tail keywords can help serve this purpose. In contrast, short-tail keywords experience poor organic search results.

Thus, as search moves from text-based to voice-based, mobile app owners can benefit from new traffic and beating the competition. They also need to chalk out a keyword strategy that is based on more conversational terms, which reflect how real people interact. In turn, app owners can derive high traffic and increased engagement.

Challenges faced with integrating voice search in apps

Using voice search within your app doesn’t come without challenges. Nevertheless, it is essential to overcome these to deliver excellent services to the target audience. For instance, a serious hindrance is the language and accent of the user.

Not all softwares support languages, so developers need to identify the audience as per their region. This will help them make strategic decisions related to languages. Accent adds a layer of complication to languages though. Targeting them can be onerous.

Similarly, punctuation is another challenge that plagues a voice-based software. For the time being, it’s tough for algorithms to work on this challenge as there are endless sentences with different punctuations.

Lastly, real-time response behavior also poses obstacles. It revolves around the app’s interaction with the user’s voice command. It entails a user giving instructions, which is converted into text and then sent back to the device to process. This is termed real-time response behavior.

In this regard, network latency can be very challenging. Developers take several steps to fix this including shifting search functionalities and voice recognition to the server side and more.

Moving forward

Considering the fact that voice search is a trending matter in the field of mobile app development, it is best to invest in it.

In fact, now is an ideal time to integrate voice search into your app, ensuring that it is more user-friendly, as this will drive better traffic and boost customer loyalty.

Peter Dutton denies he mislead Parliament regarding au pairs

Peter Dutton, the Home Affairs Minister, has denied claims that he misled Parliament regarding the granting of two visas for foreign au pairs.

Mr Dutton has faced scrutiny over his discretionary decision to approve visas for two foreign women who had been stopped by immigration officials that said that they would be in breach of their tourist visas should they begin working as au pairs.

A motion of no confidence was alluded to by Greens MP Adam Bandt, who alleges that Mr Dutton misled the Parliament regarding the issue of the au pairs.

Earlier in the year, Mr Bandt asked if Mr Dutton was able to rule out any personal connections between himself and the people helped by his au pairs decision. Mr Dutton said on record that he has no personal connection.

In March, he told the House of Representatives that he could “categorically rule out” any kind of personal relationship with the employers of either of the two women.

However, it has emerged that one of those employers was serving in the Queensland Police at the same time as Mr Dutton.

He has now doubled down on his denial, saying that Mr Bandt’s claim that he misled Parliament was baseless.

Mr Dutton then argued that simply because he worked in the same police force as one of the employers that it did not count as a personal connection.

Mr Dutton’s decision to grant working visas to the two au pairs is being investigated by a Senate committee.

One submission to the committee comes from former Border Force commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg who said that he had been contacted by one of Dutton’s head staffers asking what could be done to assist “the boss’s mate”.

Mr Dutton has responded by claiming Mr Quaedvlieg is lying out of bitterness for losing his job.

10 ways to improve the efficiency of your air conditioner

An air conditioning unit that isn’t efficient in cooling a room isn’t only a pain but also increases your electricity expenses. You should always check that your AC can do the job it was designed to do.

There are several ways you can improve the efficiency of your air-conditioning unit. With these tips in mind, you can say goodbye to the uncomfortable atmosphere in your home and rising power bills. Here are some tips that you can follow to improve the efficiency of your AC.

Clear out the debris from the unit’s housing

You’ll increase the efficiency of your air conditioning unit if you ensure that it’s cleaned regularly. You should clear debris out of the unit’s housing and make sure there’s enough clearance around it. A lot of times, AC units that aren’t cooling efficiently are likely to have some debris caught inside.

Dust, dirt and leaves can settle inside the housing of your air conditioning unit. It’s also advisable that you trim back any straggling plants and bushes near the unit’s housing. If you follow this tip, you can allow your AC to operate efficiently.

Check the ventilation fins

The ventilation fins are the parts of the AC that allow the air to flow into the unit. Therefore, you should check if they’re opened properly. There are times in which they are close, which obstructs air flow and slows down your AC. It’s necessary that you get a fine comb to clear out any dirt or obstructions that may have settled on the ventilation fins.

Insulate the ducts

One of the ways to improve the efficiency of your AC is to insulate the ducts. To do this, you can apply fibreglass insulation to seal and wrap the unit ducts for that purpose. If any of the inside ducts need replacing, you should call up a professional to do the job.

Install a shade

You should ensure that your air conditioning unit has at least some form of shade to shield it from the heat of the sun. The sun’s heat can cause your AC to run low with its original functions. To prevent this, you can install a shade or cover for that purpose.

Believe it or not, certain temperatures can cause circuitry malfunctions inside your AC’s housing. Such malfunction can lead to inadequate cooling, or even worse, start a fire. Another thing to note is that when running efficiently, your AC unit produces a reasonable amount of heat. Any more heat from external sources can cause it to break down.

Ventilate the attic

To lower the internal temperature in your home, it’s advisable that you set up proper ventilation up your attic. You can have an exhaust fan to minimise the effect of hot air in the attic so that your AC unit operates efficiently, without any hassles.

Cover the window with blinds and curtains

Windows that are exposed to the sun should be covered with blinds and curtains during the hot hours. You can also install solar shade screens if you want to allow light to get in without too much heat. As mentioned earlier, the sun’s heat can cause the AC to overheat, hindering its performance.

Dehumidify the air

Nowadays, air conditioning units not only provide cool air to your home, but it also gets rid of moisture-laden air out of it. However, you can double up the dehumidification process by having another dehumidifier in the room. Installing a dehumidifier can eliminate around 60 pints of water daily from your home.

Clean the air filters

According to Provincial Heating and Cooling, you should inspect the air filters of your air-conditioning unit as this will help you know when and if it needs cleaning. Clogged air filters often cause poor circulation of air to your home. However, if cleaning doesn’t solve the air circulation problem, you can consult a professional AC cleaning service to assist.

Always remember that opening your AC requires a professional to do it. Never attempt to DIY your AC unit if something inside it needs replacement as you might mess up something, causing more damage to the unit.

Upgrade to a modern AC unit

Old air conditioning units are way less efficient than the new ones. It will do you good to upgrade your AC. You should choose an AC unit from a respected brand, one that is renowned in providing comfort when cooling your home.

If you’re worried about the costs of a brand new AC, think of the maintenance costs of your old unit. Think of the costly repairs and the rising power bills you’ll have to pay if you don’t choose to upgrade.

Insulate air leaks in your home

You should look for air leaks in your home and insulate them. Air leaks can cause your air conditioning unit to work harder in providing air inside your home and it can also increase your electricity expenses.

Takeaway

Your air conditioning unit should provide you comfort, not problems. Therefore, if you encounter issues with your AC, perhaps a little tweak can help it operate at its best, or perhaps purchasing a whole new unit may be the best course of action.

5 effective oral hygiene methods with braces

Keeping your teeth healthy and clean while having braces can be challenging. Many people undergo orthodontic treatment and cleaning your teeth can be a pain, however, it is incredibly important to see your dentist regularly

It’s easy to clean and whiten teeth using just a toothbrush. However, those with braces need special attention when it comes to dental health. All patients that undergo orthodontic procedures already know how to clean their braces. Those new to this experience often encounter problems because of complacency.

Contrary to some, braces are for corrective purposes and not simply used for fashion. It is the reason why people should take extra care of their teeth when they have braces on. Written below are some tips on how you can effectively clean and maintain your pearly whites.

Use whitening toothpaste

Brushing your teeth when you have braces on may be difficult and challenging. Using the right kind of toothpaste goes a very long way when you brush your teeth. Look for brands that are approved by the Australian Dental Association.

Any brand of toothpaste that’s approved by the ADA contains fluoride. Fluoride is essential to dental health as it is the primary mineral that helps whiten the teeth

Some brands of toothpaste have different abrasives such as peroxide and baking soda, which are essential in removing stains from the teeth

These particular products only remove the stains on the surface of the teeth. It won’t change the colour of the entire enamel instantly. Some brands encourage brushing on a regular basis.

Be careful of the abrasives in some brands. Some are too rough and may cause damage instead of properly cleaning your teeth.

In-office bleaching

In-office bleaching or “chairside bleaching” requires one to two clinic visits. This type of method is where the dentist applies a potent bleaching agent to the teeth. Also, infrared lighting will expose the teeth for faster results.

Bleaching is considered an “after care” treatment for people with braces because the process is only done when the braces are removed.

Floss at least once a day

Make sure to floss your teeth before brushing. Use an orthodontic flosser to make it easier. You have to make sure you floss not only between your teeth and braces but also under each wire. Use waxed floss when cleaning your teeth as it’s much easier to slide through each tooth compared to unwaxed floss.

Watch what you eat

When you have braces on your teeth, it’s essential to be mindful of every food you’re going to eat. You don’t want to have cavity build up when you have your braces.

For the first few days or weeks, it’s good that you create an effective diet plan which include soft foods such as soup, pudding, yogurt, veggies, fruits, seafood, and light crackers. Afterwards, you can start moving on to solid food, eventually progressing on to your regular diet. Be wary of biting down too hard as it can cause pain in some cases.

Also, there are certain foods that you should avoid eating as it could damage the metal brackets. Bubble gum, popcorn, caramel, hard foods like nuts, and sugary foods such as candies can cause damage to the braces, the teeth, and your gums if consumed regularly in large quantities.

Rinse mouth after eating

It’s common that after you eat you should rinse your mouth as it temporarily becomes acidic. Also, rinse your mouth using water only to take out small food fragments. After eating, you should wait at least thirty minutes before brushing your teeth as enamels soften after you eat so if you brush directly it may damage the coating of your teeth.

Takeaway

Taking care of your metal brackets may give you a hard time, but the result of it always makes you feel satisfied. Consider these tips provided by Markham Dental and tricks to make your teeth healthy as well as your braces.

If you ever need dental care or whitening services, consult your local dentist or orthodontist for further information. They will always be willing to provide you the services you’re looking for. With or without braces, always take care of your dental health as it’s essential in leading a happy life with a positive smile.

How to negotiate a housing rental price

Today rent can become a real burden for a lot of people. It’s hard to believe, but 17% of people spend around half of their income on rent.

You might be scrolling rental websites for hours and feel desperate because the figures seem impossible to manage. This may even be your first time looking at renting or buying a home or apartment. Naturally, you might feel helpless because you can do nothing about it. But what if, in fact, you can?

In most cases, there is room for negotiation for a lower rent. Of course, landlords won’t give you a discount for free. You have to be smart and prepared to win the bargain.

Here’s a list of things that can help you lower your rent:

Practice

If you’re not used to bargaining, the very thought of discussing a lower rent can make you nervous. Though there’s absolutely nothing to be afraid (in the worst-case scenario the landlord will just refuse to do it), your uneasiness is totally understandable.

But think about it, what usually helps with the fear of doing something for the first time? Right, practice.

Although it might feel weird to do it, grab a friend and try to role-play the negotiation. And, even if it’s not your first time negotiating, practice will improve your performance.

Timing

We all know how important it is to be at the right place and at the right time. The art of timing is one of the essential negotiation skills.

When it comes to negotiating your rent, you probably don’t have all the time in the world to wait for the perfect circumstances. Nevertheless, there are some key moments to start negotiation that can get you the best price:

The dead season

Fall and winter months are a dead period for landlords. People are not willing to look for rental properties and they are even less willing to go through the packing and moving process in grim weather. Owners get desperate to fill vacancies and it affects the power balance in negotiation.

In this case, you have something your landlord needs. Use your advantage, but don’t overplay it.

If you’re looking for a new place, you can start in October or November. But remember that the prices will keep going down during the whole season. And if you want to negotiate the rent of your current place, you can get a significant discount by offering to extend your lease to spring or summer, so it’s easier for the landlord to find the tenants.

The end of the month

This one will only work for new tenants. The end of the month is a tough time for landlords when they struggle to find tenants ASAP. You’re relieving their stress by moving in at this time.

A few months before the end of your lease

If you’re negotiating about your current rent, it’s better to start the discussion at least a few months before your lease expires. The reason is simple: you don’t want your landlord to think that you want to break your lease.

Know your leverage

The key to a successful negotiation is to present the deal as a win for everyone. Find out how exactly you can make your landlord’s life easier and use it.

Some things you can offer:

Upfront payment: If you can afford it, pay 3-4 months in advance.

Longer lease: The longer you stay, the longer the landlord doesn’t need to look for a new tenant.

Extend termination notice: Offer to prolong your termination notice from 30 to 60 or 90 days.

Know the market

Thorough research is an essential part of every successful negotiation. If you want to win the best price, you just have to know what you’re dealing with. So take your time to study the market properly.

First of all, you have to know if negotiation is even on the table. You can learn it by comparing the prices of similar properties in the neighborhood and in other areas.

If the market is tight (meaning, the number of prospective tenants is higher than the number of properties for rent), most landlords won’t even consider lowering the price. Whereas, in loose markets (where there are more available properties than tenants) landlords are pressured to start making profit, so you have more space for negotiation.

A good idea is also to check how long the apartment stayed on the market before you found it. If the place has stayed empty for two or three months, you are very likely to get a very good discount on it.

You can also keep an eye on the number of new properties in the neighborhood. If there are a lot of recently built modern living complexes in the area, the price for the apartments in them is likely to go down, at least temporarily.

Be the handyman

Providing, you’re actually able to do it, you can offer your help with repairment and maintenance in exchange for a discount. You can also propose to replace the damaged items.

Most minor problems, like scratched surfaces or damaged paint, can be fixed in no time and with minimal resources. But when it comes to something serious, you should be very confident in your skills.

Alternatively, you can suggest taking an apartment with some flaws as it is at a lower price. In that case, make sure all the defects are documented. You don’t want to pay for something you didn’t damage.

No pets and smoking

Of course, if the rules say you’re not allowed to do something, you have to obey. But what if you have the permission to do things you don’t really want or need to do? You can use it as a leverage in bargaining.

Think about it: after a pet owner leaves the apartment, the landlord has to spend money and/or time on cleaning. And tenants who smoke not only leave a cigarette smell after living in the apartment, they also can put the building at risk of fire. So by giving a reasonable discount to people who don’t own pets or smoke, the landlord is actually saving their resources.

Don’t limit to money

A price reduction is not the only thing you can get out of the negotiation. In fact, not every landlord is ready to lower the rent, no matter how good of a haggler you are.

But a property owner who is stubborn about the money can be much more flexible about amenities and benefits. It’s particularly typical for large properties.

You can ask for things like:

Furniture or Appliances Upgrade

If you’re haggling for a discount, getting a new stove or a fridge might be just as good as getting a rent discount.

Amenities Discount

You can try to lower the fee for the local gym, pool or sauna membership.

Parking

If you have a car, you can try to get yourself a parking place with a shelter, or closer to the entrance. In some cases, you can even win a free one.

Negotiating rent is not easy if you come prepared and confident. Do your homework and you will win the best price and get what you want.

How to handle 7 common plumbing emergencies

Plumbing emergencies are some of a homeowners’ worst nightmares. Whatever the cause of your plumbing issue may be, calling a professional plumber should be your only course of action.

Why? Emergencies are unplanned circumstances. They can range from simple problems to more complex issues, so it is highly recommended that you have a skilled plumber who is trained for these specific situations.

Here are 7 common plumbing emergencies:

1. Blocked Drains

Debris, such as strands of your hair, can accumulate in your shower or tub drain over time. As a result, your drain can become blocked, which then can lead to flooding in your home.

Using a plunger and drain cleaner can work, but if this proves ineffective, it could be time to call an emergency plumber.

2. Blocked and overflowing toilet

If your toilet is blocked, water can overflow quickly when you flush, and this can result in immense water damage and unsanitary problems.

The best way to avoid an overflowing toilet is to never flush any products apart from toilet paper. Plastic wrappers, wet wipes, paper towels, and tissues can easily block your plumbing system.

When this happens, before calling a plumber, you must switch off the water supply valve under the toilet tank so the water won’t enter the bowl.

3. Burst and frozen pipes

If your pipes are above ground or near the surface, the water can freeze if the temperature gets too low. And this can result in different problems, from high pressure to burst pipes.

To prevent this from happening, you should use a heater and run it at regular intervals during the cold months. Also, you can cover your pipes with towels.

But if the pipe has ruptured already, you need to turn off the water main tap and run the remaining water until the supply runs out. After that, call an emergency plumber.

4. Damaged water heater

If your tap or shower is releasing water that is too hot or too cold, and has a strange odour, your water heater is the main culprit.

The odour problem can be solved by flushing the water tank, but if you notice even a small leak, you must call a plumbing expert to inspect and fix your water heater.

5. Sewer system backup

Gurgling toilets, bad odour, or water leaking from drains are just some of the signs of a sewer system backup. This plumbing emergency is often caused by a blockage, so you must avoid throwing any items into your toilet, drainage systems, and sink.

The moment you experience any of these signs of a sewer system backup, call an emergency plumbing specialist.

6. Water Leaks

Leaks can occur from your appliances or from the pipes running throughout your home. Though some leaks are minor, the worst thing you can do is just ignore them. Forgoing a minor leak could lead to costly home repairs.

A higher-than-normal water bill is a good indicator that there is a water leakage somewhere. Other signs include puddles of water, water stains, and audible water drips.  As soon as you notice any of these signs, you must call a professional plumber.

When renovating your kitchen or your entire home, you should avoid faulty installations. Make sure you enlist the services of a professional you trust when connecting appliances and fixtures.

Photo: music4life, Pixabay

7. Gas Leaks

A gas leak is a serious plumbing problem. You must have a carbon monoxide detector installed in your home. This is a device that changes its colour as the level of carbon monoxide in the air increases.

Once you smell gas, you must check all your gas appliances, turn off the gas ring, and open the windows to let the gas dissipate. If, after doing these things, the level of carbon monoxide continues to increase and the smell of gas persists, leave your house and call an emergency plumber.

Keeping your plumbing system running well is the best way to prevent these plumbing emergencies. A maintenance service allows a professional plumber to look for any signs of wear and tear in your plumbing system, inspect your pipes, and fix the problems before they get worse.

Plumbing emergencies are stressful and inconvenient, causing significant damage to your home and quickly piling on the costs. By being aware of the common plumbing emergencies, you will be able to anticipate as well as deal with them efficiently before they get out of hand.

Labor takes aim at Peter Dutton’s childcare centres

Federal Labor has seized on new evidence suggesting a financial agreement between the Commonwealth and one of Peter Dutton’s childcare centres.

Any attempt by Labor to have Mr Dutton’s case taken to the High Court to assess his eligibility to sit in parliament would need to support of Coalition as well as Labor MPs.

Mr Dutton has insisted that he is not in breach of section 44(v) of Australia’s constitution, which prohibits politicians getting a financial benefit from the Commonwealth.

The Home Affairs Minister has ownership stakes in two childcare centres in Brisbane which receive Commonwealth subsidies for their services.

Mr Dutton has obtained legal counsel which alleges that the subsidies did not put him in breach of the constitution because they were part of a broad policy and not an individual agreement.

However, new documents have revealed an agreement between one of the Brisbane centres and the Commonwealth for the funding of a specialist teacher for an autistic child.

Mark Dreyfus, the Shadow Attorney-General, said that the new information added some weight to Labor’s demands for Mr Dutton’s eligibility to be assessed.

He also denied that the symbolic merit of the agreement, assisting a disabled child, should be considered in the debate. He said that “the prohibition in the constitution is absolutely clear”.

The issue of Peter Dutton’s parliamentary eligibility was urgently raised during the Liberal leadership spill last month, in which Dutton was a contender to become Prime Minister.

The nation’s top lawyer, Solicitor-General Stephen Donaghue, said that the subsidy scheme did not render Mr Dutton ineligible but that he could not be certain as he did not have all the facts in front of him.

New look Wallabies face Springboks tonight

Tonight the Wallabies will look to kick their Rugby Championship campaign into gear when they face the Springboks in Brisbane. Both sides have had shaky international seasons so far, although in fairness to the Wallabies all five of their matches have been against the two best teams in the world.

Michael Cheika has re-jigged the team after the humiliation of the two matches against New Zealand, with the biggest change coming at five-eighth where Bernard Foley has been dropped to the bench, with Kurtley Beale moving to fly half for the first time since 2014 and Matt Toomua coming in at 12.

We can probably expect to see Toomua and Beale sharing responsibilities at first receiver in the manner of Foley and Beale, although it will be interesting to see how effective Beale is in attack without his partner in crime.

In the Wallabies forwards the front row which forced a scrum try against the All Blacks has been retained, with Taniela Tupou coming onto the bench to replace Sekope Kepu. Rory Arnold comes into the second row to try and add some attacking punch, with Izack Rodda relegated to the bench and Rob Simmons dropped entirely. The back row is unchanged, although Ned Hanigan replaces Pete Samu on the bench and will help shore up the line-out when he comes on.

In the rest of the Wallabies backline only Will Genia, Reece Hodge and Marika Koroibete retain their places from the Bledisloe matches, with Israel Folau returning from injury at fullback and pushing Dane Haylett-Petty to the wing. On the bench Joe Powell has taken the reserve halfback spot from Nick Phipps.

The Springboks have also shaken up their team, with Elton Jantjies taking over at fly half for the Brisbane clash with the Wallabies. Malcolm Marx, who rivals David Pocock as the biggest breakdown pest in rugby, has been shifted to the bench in a surprise move.

With both teams experimenting with their playmaking combinations this match could be a cracker. Beale and Jantjies are certainly not known for keeping their powder dry, so expect to see fireworks. In a high scoring game the class of the Wallabies, with Bernard Foley combining with Beale late in the game, should see them get over the top at home.
