A woman has been used as a sex slave and was forced to live on just bread and pickles by her husband as he wouldn’t allow her to leave the bedroom.

The Melbourne woman was sexually and verbally abused by her husband since moving to Australia and was only allowed to leave the bedroom to cook and clean for her husband.

The woman moved from India in 2015 to be with her husband where she lived with him and his brother. The woman was ordered to do housework for the two men and was not allowed to leave the house.

The man is unable to be named for legal reasons however it can be confirmed that he is being charged with a Commonwealth offence of intentionally forcing his wife into slavery and sex slavery.

It has been said that the woman was immediately put to work as soon as she arrived in Australia despite being extremely tired from her travels. She was ordered to clean, do laundry and other domestic work.

The woman did have a mobile phone but was unable to attain an Australian SIM card due to the effective house arrest she was under by her husband. Police say that the woman did not “have access to any money, and when she asked if she could go to work to earn money, her husband told her she could not leave the house”.

Often given little food and forced to live on bread and pickles on frequent occasions, the Indian woman was regularly abused by her husband, both sexually and verbally and was often forced to give oral sex – essentially being used as a sex slave.

It has also been said that the husband would regularly ask the woman’s Indian family for money. The woman said that she felt constantly monitored by her husband and brother in law and was even refused a doctor’s visit when she was sick for three consecutive days.

It was approximately 6 weeks until the woman was able to find any reprieve from the ‘slavery’ that she had found herself in.

The woman managed to reach help when she found an unlocked computer one day. She is said to have contacted her sister. The brother in law apparently found her using the computer before she fled the house and went to the neighbours who called the police.

These sex slave accusations arose on the first day of the husbands hearing in a procedure to determine whether or not he should stand trial. The hearing is ongoing.
