Lil Nas X on Old Town Road and “having to be a voice” for the LGBTQ

Lil Nas X is only 20 years old but his impact on the music industry is one that will resonate for years to come.

Before his smash hit Old Time Road skyrocketed him into fame, the rapper was just an ordinary student. Born Montero Lamar Hill, the Georgia native was struggling to hold down jobs at theme parks and fast food chains. Now, he’s a household name as he topped the Billboard charts with his song featuring Billy Cyrus. The singer knows that the song didn’t just change his life, it’s a part of the lives of a new generation.

“I’m happy it’s become a part of so many people’s lives. Kids are going to grow up with that song and play it to remember these times, which makes me feel amazing,” the rapper tells GQ Hype. He recently found out about a fan who had Old Town Road played at his funeral. “It was in the hearse with them, one last ride,” he explained.

As for coming out on pride month, a move that garnered more support than backlash the rapper says:

“Live your life to its fullest potential and don’t really care too much about what other people think of you. I used to say that cliché, but I never really lived by it, until now.” Lil Nas X admits “having to be a voice” can be overwhelming but says his impact as an openly gay man in Hip Hop is well worth it. “Since I came out, people have been coming up to me saying, ‘You’re making a way for us,’” he adds.
