“Last Christmas” rakes in $100 million at international box office

Who says cheesy holiday romantic comedies are out? Despite its negative critical reviews, “Last Christmas” continues to soar high in the global box office.

Universal Studios’ Christmas movie starring Emilia Clarke (Solo, Above Suspicion) and Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, A Simple Favor) has reached a box office milestone. The movie has earned $100 million in global ticket sales. This signifies that Last Christmas is a massive hit among audiences — something that should not be taken lightly. The film received bad reviews from critics because of its unexpected twist ending and this signifies it bouncing back.

Unfortunately, its trailer has basically given the twist away. But if you haven’t figured it out, good for you!

Following its six-week screening in domestic theatres, Last Christmas earned a total of $34.4 million. In addition to that, it made $66.5 million overseas. The film was made under a $25 million budget meaning a hefty sum of its sales will be received by the studio. The film made its debut earlier in November. It opened with $11.4 million and slowly rose in the domestic box office. It managed to stay in the top 10 movies for five consecutive weeks.

The Paul Feig-helmed film is based on the titular George Michael song. It centers a pessimistic young woman struggling with her health played by Clarke. Her fate changes when she meets a mystery man played by Golding. Featured in the star-studded cast is the movie’s screenwriter Emma Thompson and Michelle Yeoh.
